So I'm toying with the idea of putting a lt1 in my 76. Wanna keep it carbed though. Anyone done this before? Any idea if it bolts up to the 76s tranny?

What is your current setup pontiac or chevy? What transmission? Etc. This will help your questions get answered easier. As much detail as possible.
Hope this goes well I wanna see an maybe put my hands on this build.

Right now I have the stock pontiac tranny (TH350?) and the stock pontiac 350. I've been told a SBC will not bolt up to a pontiac trans. If I do the LT swap I want it carbed. No ECU.

Hope to be able to make this happen, just trying to get as much info as i can before i buy it. I loved the LT1 in my 95, would love to have that power again.

you prob have the BOP th350 tranny in the car which is a different bolt pattern then the chevy unit .As far as the rest it shouldn't be a problem but the 2K budget will be tight with all the extra stuff you will need.

why would you want a turbo350? with 4l60e at least you can go with lower gears and still get way better gas mileage. I bought a running 97 z28 for a grand so a 2k budget isn't out of the question.
did california bound 80-81 trans ams come with 305's? that would give you sbc mounts at least.

You'll need motor mounts for a 76 camaro. The ones that bolt to the frame. Then you'll need motor mount brackets for a 76 camaro with sbc. The ones that bolt to the motor. Other brackets look close but they will not work gotta use camaro ones. That will get the motor sitting in the frame. Oh yea, the frame has multiple holes drilled in it for chevy and pontiac motors. You need to use the holes closest to the front. Your pontiac motor uses the ones in the middle.
Trans...either find an adapter for your pontiac trans or swap/buy a chevy t350. No drive shaft or cross member mods should be necessary.
For an LT1 carb intake new ones are acouple hundred $$. I just seen one on craigslist for $100 here in ft worth. Good price in my opinion.
For the distributer your old pontiac one will not work in the chevy motor, need a sbc one.
For fuel delivery you'll need an electric fuel pump and pressure regulator set to a max of 8 psi. The LT1 doe's not have a mechanical one.
Exhaust...headers are limited that fit our 2nd gen frame and have primary tubes that match the LT1. Headman #65104 will work or custom head pipes from the stock LT1 manifolds into your existing system. You'll have to sort out the cooling system, the stock radiator from a LT1 fbody will fit easily with little mods. Then you can use upper/lower rad hoses for an LT1.
I'm sure I forgot some things but that will get ya in the right direction. I'm doing an LT1 swap into my 78 TA? My build is titled "78TA Slow build". best of luck with your build....you can do it on a 2k budget but your gonna need to find used parts to pull it off.

Found a donor car with a complete lt1 and tranny. Trying to figure out if the long tubes on the LT1 will have routing issues with the 76 frame. Also, does anyone know if the driveshaft works?

Long tubes might not work. You will probably need to swap to long tubes built for the car. Not 100% on that tho but is the usual case.
I'm thinking driveshaft length should be the same. If I remember right the th350 and 4l60e have the same overall length, just as the th400 and 4l80e are the same length but once again not 100% on that lol

From what ive read, the LT1's have to have their specific headers due to the shape of the ports. Can anyone back that up?

You don't have to. I believe 79LT1Monte used regular round port SBC headers on his Monte Carlo. I found a set of "vortec" port headers for mine which are the same "d" port used on the lt1. Others have used square port headers with success. The trick is getting the right header gaskets to work when using something other than d port headers.

The best thing to do is find headers specific for your car with 1and 3/4" primaries, that way the entire exhaust port is covered and shape really doesn't matter anymore.

You will have to shorten the drive shaft if you want to use the OD trans. Also, you will have to move the cross member back and drill new holes for it.

Check out my build for pics and fitment issues you will encounter when using headers. I just uploaded some pics today. Build is titled "78TA Slow Build".
