I know there are some on this board and hopefully some long range shooters that can give some input.
So, my problem is i have destroyed two low end scopes on my .300wby mag. And i have been looking for good glass for a few months. My goal is to shoot 800yrds and eventually steeping to 1000. Of course my choice would be a Nightforce or Leupold mark IV but don't really have the money for a $1300+ scope.
So im looking of suggestions for a good scope that is capable of that range and can withstand the recoil of large mag. calibers. I have recently looked at the Vortex Viper scopes but don't know any one with one. Any input?

you goals are pretty lofty. I shoot at a range and most ranges are only 300 yards at most at least in this area a few might go to 500 if you look hard enough. I wont shoot anywhere but at a range or hunting because I want to know where my rounds are going and a proper back stop is pretty important. Honestly since I dont know your experience level I cant really comment on that any further.
Honestly interns of the scope there is no cheap way out. I have a marlin 45-70 and the recoil on that has destroyed every cheap scope i have put on it. Its not just a mater of whether it will destroy the scope but how well it will hold a zero as well. the recoil can knock the sights out of zero and you will constantly be adjusting the scope. last but not least cheap scopes have poor optics. When I went to a Nikon I was shocked at how clearly I could see through the scope. At long ranges this is a must. If its something your dead set on then save your money and just get the right tool for the job.
This is my marlin 1895GBL 45-70 the scope is a barska and lasted 3 shots.

I'd save up and buy quality glass. I know it's easier said than done, but it beats frequently buying mediocre scopes. Buy once, cry once.
As far as Vortex, I have their sparc rds. It's a decent optic and all Vortex optics have a lifetime, no fault warranty, so that's a plus.

From what my friends have told me, it is either Viper Vortex or save up $2K. I've yet to commit to a long range gun as ranges above 200m are impossible to find near me.

just out of curiosity.. where do you go that you can shoot 800 yards?

We only shoot Nightforce at work on anything for distance. I know it sucks biting that bullet, and you will want to shoot more once you have one, so ammo costs will go up a little :D
I will agree with the above that Vortex is probably going to be easier on your wallet, but I have never owned one to give a decent review. Have you checked any of the big game hunter forums? You could just troll a few from Google searches. (I'm sure that has already crossed your mind)

I own a Vortex Diamondback. It is one of their lower line scopes so I would not suggest that for your application, but it is a very good scope for that price point. I would suggest looking into the Viper line based on my experience with the Diamondback. I have heard nothing but good things about the Viper and Vortex in general.

Just out of curiosity, what scopes have you "destroyed" on a .300 Weatherby and what was the damage? A cousin of mine hunts with a .300 Weatherby mag and uses a Leupold VX-II and it has been working fine for 10+ years now.
If your scopes are repeatedly breaking on top of a 300 Weatherby then I'd first look at the bases/mount/rings.
The .300 Weatherby is a potent cartridge, but it's not in the same class as .50BMG and several others known to require specific optics and mounting solutions in order to work properly.
It's easy to find a scope that will withstand the recoil of a .300 Weatherby. There are a multitude of cheap (sub-$300) scopes that will do that just fine.
However, you're not going to find a sub-$300 scope that I'd want to use to shoot anything past about 500 yards, regardless of the weapon it's mounted on. Scopes suitable for that kind of target work start at $800 or so and go on up from there. If you're shooting 1000+ yards you're probably going to want a scope costing $1000+. Spending about a dollar per yard out to 1k yards (past that it can get even more expensive) is a pretty decent rule of thumb when looking for a suitable scope.
Leupold, Nikon, Burris, and a few others come to mind when thinking about lower-priced units that may be suitable for these tasks. The higher-priced stuff would be the Zeiss, Swarovski, Nightforce, etc.

i have had NcStar and BSA scopes, worked great on lower cal. rifles, but my series2 Vanguard takes them out. the NcStar (Mark III) lost zero with in 10 shots and would not re-zero. and the BSA i have out about 60 rounds with (180gr Splitzer) and over the weekend took a shot and recoil cracked one of the inner lenses.
right now im looking in the $5-800 range for my WBY, down the road when i get my next rifle (Savage BA110 .338 lapua) then i will definitely invest in a Night Force. i know im asking a lot out of the .300 rnd to reach to 800, but hopefully ill be able to do it. and so far im still shooting factory rds i have yet to reload.
also over the holidays i plan on getting my barrel threaded and put a break on and also glass bedding the stock, so it should cut down on some of the recoil.

burris,nikon, = 200 to 400 range.
meopta,trijicon 600=1k range.
i own one of each listed. they have never let me down and have nice clear glass. but the biggest things i shoot is .270 and .308

Oh ok. I wouldn't run those on anything I owned. Decent scopes begin at around $200 for anything centerfire IMO.

The 300 Weatherby cartridge will do fine at that distance, and it can throw the high-BC 190-200+ grain bullets. People routinely do target work with .308s out to 1000 yards.

right now im really looking at the Bushnell Elite Tactical 6-24x50

reading a lot of reviews and videos about it and seems like a good choice and i have found it for $699.

I shoot a .300 wby, and a .270 wby mag and have had good luck with mid range Nikon glass. Both mine are mark v. My dad has a synthetic vanguard and it has no problem with low end optics.

well, i ordered the Bushnell Elite Tactical 6-24x50, G2 Retical, first focal plane. got my set of Tally rings today, scope should be here monday. planning on glass beading and ordering a Timney trigger, and still looking for a place to thread the barrel.
any one here do there own reloading? i have helped out a buddy before, but i plan on getting into it my self. mainly to keep the cost of my .300 down.
cant wait for the spring so i can start in the amature classes of shooting! (Varmint calibers up to 500 yds, 30cal class 500+yds)

I bought this today.
I have .223 rifles and a R700 .308 that I can shoot quite far with, but my favorite two firearms are the iron sight Marlin 2000L and the Anschutz 1913 both in 22LR. Both of these rifles can shoot 10 rounds at 50ft in the same hole, however the challenge is to try and do that while standing and in the freehand.

7mm is a good round, that is actually what i was looking at before i looked at the weatherby .300. i new i was wanting to long range shoot and the .300 has better ballistic beyond 600 yrds. what 7mm do you have?
