So picked up a great running 5.3 that im planning on installing in my 69 chevelle, anyways I received a phone call today from my cousin saying he can get me a 4 inch lunati pro series crank for dirt cheap from what I've read this with boring the shit out of it would make it a 383 , I know pistons are few for the 5.3 unless you get custom ones made but here's the deal I don't need big cubes nor do I want to spend a ton of cash originally I just planned on a rod and piston upgrade and boost the shit out of it .
So here's my question should I mess with stroking this 5.3 or just upgrade the rods and pistons and save this crank for a 6.0 build later down the road.

Save the crank. The 5.3 is more then able to make great power under boost. Without the extra inches.

No need to mess with it. Stock bottoms hold great!

This. One of the magazines did an expo not too long ago where they boosted a stock bottom end 4.8, made 1200 hp and the ignition system gave before the stock bottom end did. And they were trying to break the bottom end.

Yeah I've read the article's im a believer these things are awesome the only reason I planned on upgrading the rods and pistons is my heavy right foot . I'm still getting that crank even if i use it for a lamp haha for the price. The more I think about stroking the 5.3 I don't want to do it.

Well damn now you guys have me thinking about the original plan of just slapping a cam in it and clean up the heads and run it till she blows .

yup, I would cam it, put the cheapy ebay studs in it, ls9 headgaskets, and let her eat. Conservative timing, e85 and don't run a ton of rpm and it will last a while.

That's what I was thinking there's tons of rite ups on these things make pretty damn good power

Don't bother dumping money into the 5.3. Throw it in, and do what you want to it until I gives up. Replace. Repeat.

I know a guy, who works for a MAJOR player in the GM performance world. He's got an (I think) 88 S10 with twin turbo's fabbed by himself, and he consistently runs stock 5.3 motors in it. Low 9's high 8's all day long. Blows one up, tosses a new one in, does it again. They're so cheap that it's almost fun to wring the shit out of one until it blows just to do it all over again.

I agree with Fastbird. These engines are cheap and easy to find. So just beat on it till it blows.

I read a article online. Where they tested the engines strength. forgot which magazine did it. But they took a stock 4.8 and added a cheap turbo setup using a ebay turbo. And made like 26 1,000+ horsepower pulls. And the engine was running fine when they finally gave up and stopped.

Hot Rod. Took a (presumed) 5.3, added a 224 cam, ported heads, kept the stock bearings, crank, pistons, rods, and opened up the ring gaps some. Found out it was a 4.8 on teardown, said to hell with it, ran it anyway. 26 PSI, 1200 flywheel horsepower, and 40+ dyno pulls later, it was still running strong.

I'll see if I can't find and scan in the article. It's pretty amazing, and what the guy I know is doing just backs it up.

Ok, I was wrong. They gave up because they ran out of dyno time.

Kind of makes you want to shove a 5.3 into something small and put stoopid boost through it. Miata or FC RX7 anyone?

It's still together now , hell I only ran it once this year my cousin was trash talking me saying his turbo impala could kick the Hawks ass so I finally put him in place hahaha. But anyways I haven't ordered anything for it I wanted to have called LE by now for the new top end , I'm waiting to find a house or a property with a barn to buy first which I've got a few I'm looking at so after that I'm hoping to get the ball rolling buy spring it would be cool to meet up and make some passes with you guys.

Heck ya! that thing should really pick up with the 21 tfs's and a cam to match. Are you spraying your car at all? I want to go to Onondaga this spring, heard the track was pretty good but the bleachers being non existent and other things sucked lol
