Well I decided that I would start a thread on here as to my project that has been ongoing for a year and a half now. I have been documenting this on a few other forums and since this is dedicated to LTX I thought I'd add what I doing as well. This started outside under a car port and eventually has been garged once I finally closed on my house. I will be posting several posts to get caught up to where I am now.

Well here is a pic of the car as it was when I first obtained it. Not the best photos...but. Many other mods not seen or described but will be in due time. Stock motor, when comes time to do rebuild plan to stroke it out to a 383. Trans is 4L60E, which I plan to swap out to a built 4L80E when I stroke to 383, has shift kit and aftermarket stall. Moser 12 bolt rear end with 3.73 gears. Have a set of ZR1 style deep dish 17 X 9.5s for fronts and 17 X 11s for rears with Nittos all around to go on when she is ready to roll again. These are going to be painted artic white as well to match the car! Pacesetter LT headers ceramic coated with O2 bungs, with with true duals, deleting cats, and a 6LE CME rear bumper cover with polished CME tips. I am maintaining the EGR system however as I feel LT1s tend to run better with EGR in tact although I know you can tune it out, but removing EGR doesn't accomplish anything in my view and can create more issues than its worth. I have deleted the Air pump system though. POLY bushings all around, motor mounts, tranny, end links, sway bars, torque arm. Aftermarket Panhard rod, LCA's, Torque Arm in as far as suspension mods this far. Have many other things in the process of doing as well. And eventually plan to repaint car, taking doors, hatch, hood, and everything else off so it can be done right. It IS a work in progress!

Pic of what engine bay looked like when I first got the car. Pic doesn't show it but dirty, rusty...ah doesn't cut it in my book lol! Plus I'm not into stickers in an engine bay not my cup of tea ha ha ;-) to each his/her own.
http://i1222.photobucket.com/albums/dd499/97Z4CZ28/97 Z4C Z28 Camaro/enginebay.jpg (http://s1222.photobucket.com/user/97Z4CZ28/media/97 Z4C Z28 Camaro/enginebay.jpg.html)

Here is what it looked like once engine bay was repainted. Also, notice hood with liner removed...this nasty thing will be getting repainted as well ha ha! The engine bay was in much need of some help, dirt, rust and such, so I ripped everything out and off and in the process of replacing every bolt, nut, hose (AC lines and radiator/heat hoses), clamps (stainless polished), complete stainless polished hex head bolt kit, all new accessories (everything), completely stripped, sanded, primed and repainted the entire engine bay. ALL hoses, accessories, and other parts are original AC Delco parts. Powdercoated intake orange, accessory bracket black, all mount brackets black, oil pan, POR-15 the block orange, new valve covers, completely redone wiring harness re-tapped and new wire loom, OTVC wires/brackets. So you get the picture of what I am doing.

A few pics of once block was painted Chevy orange, and firewall and frame rails were finished painted artic white, of course K member semi gloss black. I am almost ready to put it all back together and will begin doing so this week as matter of fact. Should get it done and to the tuner in time to drive it a few times before putting away for the winter as it is NOT a daily driver.http://i1222.photobucket.com/albums/dd499/97Z4CZ28/97 Z4C Z28 Camaro/2012-09-16_16-57-59_205_zps60e2ac4e.jpg (http://s1222.photobucket.com/user/97Z4CZ28/media/97 Z4C Z28 Camaro/2012-09-16_16-57-59_205_zps60e2ac4e.jpg.html)http://i1222.photobucket.com/albums/dd499/97Z4CZ28/97 Z4C Z28 Camaro/2012-09-16_16-58-14_939_zps8e45b39f.jpg (http://s1222.photobucket.com/user/97Z4CZ28/media/97 Z4C Z28 Camaro/2012-09-16_16-58-14_939_zps8e45b39f.jpg.html)http://i1222.photobucket.com/albums/dd499/97Z4CZ28/97 Z4C Z28 Camaro/2012-09-16_16-58-39_707_zpsfafc6871.jpg (http://s1222.photobucket.com/user/97Z4CZ28/media/97 Z4C Z28 Camaro/2012-09-16_16-58-39_707_zpsfafc6871.jpg.html)

Well she is beginning to look like an Engine again! Found some brass caps to cap off Air Injection pipes on headers, don't think they look to bad and they should hold up pretty good I think. Installed EGR pipe to pass side header...another royal pain in the A$$. Hooking up to the Intake was no issue at all. bent pipe out and away from back side of intake as well. Installed Intake, and new Valve Covers with OVTC brackets (have pre-cut and assembled 8mm MSD black Super Conductor wires to go on once I mount New Delphi Optispark). Ordered new heated O2 sensors to mount in headers as well. Plan to make a heat shield for drivers side to help protect fuel lines. I am installing braided stainless fuel lines with stock style disconnects, rerouting fuel lines in behind brake booster. Will be routing the wiring harness soon as well. Few Pics of how its beginning to look.

Well I ended up droping the fuel tank to drain old fuel out didn't wanna take a chance with old fuel and such in new lines, and fuel injectors being cleaned & flow matched. I pulled rear end & fuel tank eventually removed everything under car to completely sand primer paint underbody. Glad I decided to pull tank cause evap lines dry rotted and finish fuel pump access mod. Pulled tank as I didn't wanna take chance with dirty fuel in new lines injectors and such. So underbody will look as good as rest of the car when I am done...if I am ever done! Little did I know my OCD and rust would cause me to completely want to redo the underneath in it's entirety! ;) Battled for literally weeks on front lower A arms and getting rear rusted bolts out! What a royal pain in the A$$! Got a poly kit for front end a arms. It will be worth it but damn I sure dont wanna screw with this again...damn!

Fuel tank sanded...

Ordered/received a Spohn adjustable chrome moly mid-length torque arm, bracket with driveshaft loop, chrome moly shock tower brace, rear sway bar installation kit for the 12 bolt (doing it the right way). And some new hardware kits for existing suspension pieces as well. Ordered/received set of Bilstein (SLP valved) shocks on all four corners. Also, ordered/received a set of Eibach Sportline lowering springs.

Pic of the leather seat covers and a matching deck mat...had to have them! These will go great with paint scheme of the car. Spendy but well worth it!

A few pics to update as to where I am at now. Still haven't started her up yet as I got sidetracked into completely redoing the entire underneath of the car before I can put it all back together! Only thing I have done is turn the crank over by hand. Only things I still need to order are new carpet, stainless brake hard lines, Stainless exhaust (decided to go true duals with X pipe and bullets to the CME) and other than some new bolts here and there, and few odds and ends I already have everything ready to go. Interior is completely out now as well. So slow but sure.

I decided to completely sand the entire underbody, prime with POR-15 and completely paint it with POR-15s Whitecoat. Other than a few places to touch up where I have already painted, all that is left is the rear wheel wells, top from above the driveshaft tunnel to the rear bumper area. This are still need to be finished sanding and primed/painted. I hope that my efforts are worthwhile in the end. It takes some time to do this right but should last a long time as well. Of course car will not see weather either and is garaged so should be easy to maintain. I have also decided that once done I am going to repaint the car and reapply new decals and clearcoat over them so they wont peel in the future as well. So here we go...

Bad ass!! This is absolutely my favorite Camaro ever!!! The arctic white/hugger orange is just awesome! U can see the car a mile away. I can't believe the work u have into this one. My new t/a project was gonna be a quick swap and run but after looking at these build threads I may take the time and build a show/driver

Ugod02010 thanks for the kind remarks! Yea I started with just wanting to clean her up and went full bore. I have always wanted a 97 in Artic White/Hugger Orange Stripes, and almost bought one years ago but couldn't work out a deal, ended up getting back then a 95 Dark Cherry Metallic Impala SS. Had the opportunity to get this one and was able to work a deal out and got her in December of 2011. Gonna be a show car but ain't gonna be afraid to hit the track with her either! Of course with all this work she won't be a DD and no bad weather either. By the way that's a sharp looking 3rd Gen you got there as well!!

Popo8 she is far from flawless! I will be glad just to get her back on the road again to attend functions, shows and an occasional run down the strip
:D

Z4Performance thanks! I know they say good things come to those that wait and the older I get the slower or longer it takes me haha! I'll get there by spring this much I am sure of!

I sold that 1 :(
Think the kid I sold it to still has it but he was like 1hr away so I haven't seen it since it left on the flatbed. Had a 355 sbc bout 425horse plus a super powershot n.o.s. Setup. I am working on getting this 96 that I paid for week ago up here. Nothing with te seller just shipping co. Is dicking me around. I have my lt1 sitting in the garage bout to clean it up good slap some longtubes on so once the t/a finally gets here I'm ready to roll.

Ugod02010 we have all let go of one or two we wish we still had, or at least I have. Back in High School in late 70s I had a 69 GTO I let go...I know stupid! Had a 95 Impala SS I absolutely loved that car and wish I still had her. I wont let the 97 Z4C go that much I can guarantee...to much time and money haha.

Sounds like ya got a plan for the T/A once you get her home!

24907 This impala? Just seen it at a show over the summer old guy was original owner. I always liked these big ass boats! And this is the first cherry colored one I've ever seen. They're usually black.
Ive been getting busy the last few days on getting the engine cleaned/polished and painted. Now if I could get the damn car up here! If this shipping company don't screw me too I should have it here thurs or fri! Can't wait.

I'm 30 and I love my big ass boats!! Started driving I had a 79olds regency98. Now my dd when I get te last few things on is 02imp. Love full size sedans. Especially when they got some ass to em!! There's actually 2 caprice wagons sitting up the road from me lt1 cars I really considering saving up and picking the one up. Making a supersleeper!!

FINALLY installed black powdercoated Trans crossmember and got that dang jack out of my way! Also, installed a new tailshaft seal, and a new O-ring in the speed sensor prior to remounting the trans.

Another view from side. Installed the powdercoated heat shield as well. Felt good to reinstall something versus the months and months of removing parts upon parts upon parts! I have just about everything on shelf awaiting to go back on...Soon! Plan on once she is back in working/running order again to replace trans pan with a chrome one as well.
http://i1222.photobucket.com/albums/dd499/97Z4CZ28/97%20Z4C%20Z28%20Camaro/PasssideHeatshieldpowdercoatedmounted_zpseafe2935. jpg (http://s1222.photobucket.com/user/97Z4CZ28/media/97%20Z4C%20Z28%20Camaro/PasssideHeatshieldpowdercoatedmounted_zpseafe2935. jpg.html)

At present sanding underneath from rear fender wells to the rear of the car (pics to follow in a few days). Majority is sanded now just need to finish the nooks and crannies...ugh! Just be glad when I finish sanding/priming/painting to begin putting her back together again!. I want to get her where I can start her up, then worry about getting the rest of her together. So priorities are finish sand/prime/paint. Then install fuel tank and lines. Install the radiator and AC condensor, fill radiator, install PCM, fire her up! Then install rear end/driveshaft, front end steering/suspension components, get her back on wheels and off jack stands. Then finish off interior. Then take and have alignment done (trailered of course). Take to shop to have stainless true duals with X pipe to Sweet Thunder Bullet mufflers to the CME exhaust tips. Then take and have stripes removed, repainted, new strip kit applied and then clearcoated. Won't have to worry about stripes peeling again! Then finally, take to Cincy Speed in Cincinnati, Ohio and have dyno tuned. So there is the plan...I'll be glad just to get her done by end of April...that is my goal and I plan to make it!

As always thanks! Of course White! These are OE Concepts deep dish 17" ZR1's that came as black. Powdercoating you can't get an exact color match, so I had them custom painted Artic White from front to rear (not just overspray on backside) to match the car. I had some custom orange bowties made for smooth center caps. Clearcoated and look great with polished lip, and gonna use McGuard Black acorn lug nuts. Weights are on the back side so not seen and not seen inside of the wheels. 17 X 9.5 fronts with Nitto 555s 275 40's and 17 X 11 rears with Nitto 555s 315 35's. These white wheels are gonna look great with the new orange calipers and stainless brake lines inside of them on the zinc chromate drilled slotted rotors I also have hehe.

That's such a good idea I have the whole wheel done. I was looking at the back side of my wagon wheels it looks terrible. Not sure what I'm gonna do about it tho since there aluminum and I don't think I'm gonna paint them. I actually may try and trade them for something else. I like tem but I want chrome! Chrome goes so good with white!!

Well not much farther than I was but a Lot of progress still! As we all deal with, work, Wife, family, kids & grandkids, and the never ending Honey-do list. Any ways I have been sanding on the very rear of the underside of the car and have the bulk of the sanding done. Still have part of the frame rails/sheetmetal on both sides of the frame rails. The sheetmetal area where the fuel tank neck extends to the fuel door. The pass. side spring pocket needs finished. And where the fender well sheetmetal meets underbody sheetmetal has to be done. So not a lot BUT the hardest part to be done still. The fender wells where undercoating was applied by factory, unless it is evident that there was rust I am just sanding down to smooth out and will apply paint on top of it. So here are a few pics thus far. Next pics I post will be once I have completed sanding and have primered/painted. So close to finally putting her back together I can't stand it!

As you can see where I left off. Fuel pump access door hole can be seen. I am going to cut it off and cut a piece of sheetmetal larger than the hole and use small sheetmetal screws to reattach it. Some don't like a fuel pump access door but what I went through trying to get it out without removing the rearend...well lets say that ain't happening again unless necessary lol! That's how this underbody resto began...once it was out my OCD kicked in lmao.

Drivers side seen here. Access area with fuel filler door seen through it. This area had a lot of surface rust (as can be seen still as I am not finished with this area yet), still can see some original paint in this area. As well as a few nooks and cranny's that need sanded, not just here but throughout.

I'm also guilty of the trap door! Did it in the formula. That was b4 I realized how bad the inside of the tank looked and ended up having to drop everything anyways! I didn't even bother with reattaching the panel I had for the patch. I just covered it back up with the carpet. If the pump dies in the t/a I wouldn't hesitate to do it again. It's a worth while mod. Takes a day long job and turns it into something that can be done in a matter of minutes.

Jeff what's with the purple fingernail?

It's coming along really well tho.
I'm just wondering if you are spraying the underbody how are you gonna be able to get the gun into some of those places to repaint?

Ugod02010 Yea OCD is an understatement lmao...I just can't help myself! Not spraying anything underneath the car at all. Using POR-15. You do not have to take to bare metal like this using POR-15...but remember my OCD...well I did and I am. YES LOTS of time sanding, I just want it done right and to last even if the car will not see elements rust will and can appear and I don't wanna go through this again. Using POR-15 you can spray it but you can use a brush or a small foam roller and POR-15 is self leveling. POR-15 is suppose to stop the rust...how good it is really in the long run I don't know but I have used it for years and am satisfied with the results and never had issues once I applied it. Its not UV resistant so you can topcoat it with whatever paint you want or another POR-15 topcoat which is what I am using as well. POR-15 is really resistant to oils and other stuff and the surface is a breeze to clean off if necessary as well.

In as far as the trap door a lot like it and a lot don't. It only takes one time of having to try and mess with dropping a tank to convince me that a trap door is the route to go! I would def put a cover back on cause ya never know about mice or something getting up into the inside and gnawing on carpet and such...that would piss a feller off bigtime lol!

Jeffp1167 thanks for the suggestion on the sheetmetal! Cheap easy way to go that is just fine. Pop rivets may be the way to go as well if I don't use small sheetmetal screws. I like they way you did it as it looks clean too!

Yea blkchevyz the timing cover was powdercoated a chrome type color. I powdercoated as many parts as I could have done.

And last but not least thanks everyone for the remarks always appreciated and helps to keep me motivated to finish her off.

Been awhile. Any more progress? Or are u slowing down for holidays? I'm getting really close on mine. I need basically a whole exhaust. I need plugs for the exhaust manifolds for now. I pulled em out of the manifold itself. Well one side the other side don't wanna budge. Any idea where to get plugs for that? I'm just gonna do it for now till I get the longtubes on. Other than eBay I don't wanna waste $20 on two bolts in gonna use for a couple weeks. And only to start the car.

Nope at a standstill it looks like for a while or at least until after Xmas! Are you talking about plugs for the stock exhaust manifolds? If so not sure of size but go to Hardware store and you can find plugs for hardly nothing. I did this on my 95 Impala SS with stock manifolds when I removed the air system junk. See pic below...

This was a hollow threaded insert that I installed into the manifold with the plug that threaded into the insert. never leaked never had any issues! Just a suggestion.

That's exactly what I'm thinking. If not at least just one plug. Instead of two if I can find something. Checked our pretty big local hardware store they didn't have anything that big. Autozone don't either since technically ur not supposed to do this. Lol. I'm gonna have to keep hunting. I also thought about making a little piece of metal and welding the plugs closed. Since the one on the passenger side don't wanna come out. I even tried running the car to warm it. Pb blast and torch!

Sorry no update as yet. I took a break and hope to get back at it soon. I am in no rush. I got burned out with working nonstop and then working on car when I could, with all the other life issues and family. I did this last time I did another car and then picked it up and finished it in 3 months so...look for future updates coming within next few months.

Gentleman I apoligize as I dropped off of the face of the earth! Long road and long story but the short of it is two shoulder surgerys a year apart and seven bulging discs in neck with nerve impingement on one disc. Other medical issues but nothing major as well as the railroad I worked for wouldn't allow me to return to work. The railroad retirement board then medically retired me account of my age and I had over 20 good years of service. During this time I gave my life to Jesus as well as accepted the call to preach Gods Word. Several times was gonna sell my Z28 but never worked out and the last time once I laid everything out the bug bit me to pick up where I left off. So, I will update from time to time and I am gonna shoot to have her on the roadnby first of May 2023. Ten year's have passed and now i feel better than I have in years. So, here we go...again!

You and me both! I am gonna start putting front suspension back together as i am re-sanding, be light as just on surface from rear wheel wells back, then prep, primer and paint. Then begin working on getting rear suspension and the rear end back in. I will definitely continue or pickup where I left off as I go with progress and photos.

Well, I began in earnest where I had left off in 2022, but 2023 there was a period of about 8 months i was unable to do anything, health issues. Getting older isn't fun to say the least. But have not stopped and trying to do something every other day I can. Anyways, lots of changes in plan and direction and will try to update and post pics. I could start her up soon and have her on the ground soon only thing keeping that from happening is me at the moment! Only thing not done suspension wise is the K member. Went Miezere electric waterpump WP118HD, DeWitts radiator with shroud and dual fan set up, Earls Remote Trans cooler, and bunch of other things. Stay Tuned, once I can get time to post pics I will for those still around.
