View Full Version : My attempt at wood working.....

I can't afford a nice display case for my graded Emmitt Smith cards, so I finally got around to building one. I've got about a hundred more cards on top of these, been collecting graded ones for about 10 years now. I'm NOT a good wood worker. I have a cheap router/table for farting around, that's it. No miter saw, no table saw (though now I'm DEFINITELY wanting them). Miter corners were cut on a hand saw miter box. There's a LOT of router work on the underside of the shelfs and frame in order for everything to fit as it does.

Used cheap poplar from the store for the sides and shelves, 1/4" birch plywood for the backing, the fake suede I had laying around, and the bombay mahogany polystain was leftover also. I think I've got like $15 in wood invested in it.

It's not perfect, but I'm genuinely THRILLED with how it came out. I still need to make a front with a UV Protective piece of acrylic though. Next one I'll probably go with a narrower frame (I used 1" x 2" laid on the 2" side) by standing it up 2" high, but that will allow me to router a groove and completely integrate the acrylic front into the frame.

Anyway, just showing off my handiwork since I'm so excited at how it came out.

Looks good.

I love wood working. But I still get nervous when I use any electric saw. lol

Cool work! I love to make stuff in the wood shop. I like to do hand carved signs and other stuff as gifts for people. If you have a local sawmill, see if you can pick up some of their scraps or buy rough sawn. Its much cheaper than the hardware store and typically a better variety.

No injuries noted during construction. Only power tool used was the router and I'm DAMN cautious not to catch a finger in that thing.

Well, with being layed off, getting 4-5 apps out per day, I have free time because I can't drum up ANY side work right now for some reason. So..........

Enter "Mark II".

All I really did in essence to the original design was turn the 1x2 outer frame pieces up on the 1" side instead of layed down on the wider 2" side. This gave it some depth, needed for the acrylic front. Routered a 1/8" groove around the inner perimeter, and voila! I took the 1/8 groove all the way through the top so the acrylic panel simply slides directly down and given the height I hang it at unless you're 7' tall you can't see the top with the open groove.

And loaded up with the "good" ones.

I'm planning on going 2' x 4' in size on the next one using the same basic principles I used on this one. That should house 56 graded cards. My only drawback thought is that a 4'x8' piece of .118 acrylic is awfully large to be sliding into place. More to come.

And if anyone is curious, like last time, I used a hand miter box. Only change was I used a hacksaw and a new blade and got a FAR better cut than the cheap wood saw that came with the box.

Only you will see the flaws, no one else will notice. Looks perfect to me.

Thanks man. Believe it or not I think this one is actually quality enough to sell and better than about 90% of what's out there.

Looks like you may have found a new calling. Not sure what the woodworking market looks like, but you've definitely got the talent. Would at least be a great side business for you. Great job!
