Looking at a "black gun" for home defense weapon I am debating getting a 22 for practice then a 5.56 for real world. So of those 2 brands what's the preference.

Do yourself a favor and build your own...alot cheaper and its fun. I have less than $600 into mine and it's a champ. Fulton Armory Upper and New Frontier Poly Lower w/ DPMS parts kit.

X2 on a build. If I was buying an off the shelf AR-15 it would be a Daniel Defense.

Both brands are equally good. It comes down to brand preference and price range with most ar15s on the market now. Dpms is running a great promotion right now. http://img.tapatalk.com/d/13/10/10/yju5a2eh.jpg
A sportical can be had for $580 plus shipping. A Bushmaster carbon 15 runs $640 plus shipping.

I went to the gun shop with a buddy today and I fell in love but she is not a cheap ride. I am running on fumes so my memory isn't great but it is a I want to say nickel lower and a CF upper with a barrel that was lined with stainless steel. I would buy it in a heart beat but it was 3200 bucks. I just cant bring myself to drop that much on just one gun. I am seriously looking into making my own setup so it is exactly like I want. The more I look I want to get a .22 cal and .223 and .308 so I can build them just alike or to suit what they would be mostly used for... .22 cal for small game and plinking, the .223 for varmint and predators like coyotes and the .308 for deer since we can silence in WY when hunting it would be the perfect setup. Finally I saw a 12 ga shotgun setup like an AR and I would love that too.

I have a Carbon 15. Its a good gun. I'm through a good 1500 rounds now and no issues. A lot of people will tell you the cheap ones are junk, but if you take care of it, cheap is fine. People think you need to have your can killer built to knock down doors in Iraq.
I don't know anyone who has those Windham ones personally, but they do have a nice price tag on the ones I've seen at Academy. I'm sure you couldn't go wrong there either

just a quick update I picked up a ruger sr556 and love it. guy who had it before put a couple rds through it and said he didn't like the feel of it. I put 20 rds through it and at 150-200 yards I was able to make a pop can dance after I got the sight picture right with the milk jug full of water. Little on the hefty side but shoots nice and solid. I held it compared to a carbon 15 and the carbon 15 just felt cheap and flimsy. Ill post pics and updates as I get a chance to sight it in better

My brother bought a Windham after we did a ton of research. They are essentially all the guys who started and built bushmaster guns under a new name after bush sold out to cerebrus/freedom group (dpms/Remington/Cobb/marlin/h&r).
If you want a mass produced but well known and backed gun, get bushmaster. If you want a newer but slightly higher quality gun, get the Windham.

From what I understand, the folks who used to build Bushys now build Windhams. Remington acquired Bushy a while back and moved production to another factory and changed a few things about the rifles themselves.
Either is a good weapon, but I'd probably buy the Windham if both were the same price.

Deja vu?
