I have been working on swapping out some external parts from my stock rebuilt 95 LT1 to my built 97 355 LT1. I wanted to swap the timing cover over so I took off the pan from the 95. When I did I was greeted with a surprise, it had 4 bolt mains. Now I am not the original owner of this car. I bought it in 05 with 140K miles on it and in need of a rebuild. When I removed the engine I don't recall any signs of previous removal to lead me to believe it been out before. I had seen some people say their f body came with factory 4 bolt mains, but had never seen 1 before. Has anybody else found one.

As I'm aware, none of them came with a 4 bolt main. However, if something happened, and there was an insurance claim on the engine, (suck water into intake and such) it could have possibly ended up with a gmpp 4 bolt block. Thats what happened with colin, nocturnalZ

It must have been a replacement from GM.

Only 97 LT4 equipped F-Bodies got 4-bolt mains.

my fiends 95 had a 4 bolt as well. i remember reading production ran low of 2 bolts so they would swap in the 4 bolt blocks from the vettes.

I had read that also but never seen 1 in person. When I pulled it out in 2005 for the rebuild I never even looked at it, just dropped it off at the machine shop and picked it up when it was done. I needed 1 rod and piston and rings and bearings. 24445

Got one sitting in my pole barn... I'm having a brainfart but the guy told me it came out of his Camaro, but I can't remember the year. Could've easily been swapped from a vette though.. any way to determine what it came from by a casting # or some identification?

There's a no. By the oil filter. I found a website b4 that u put the no. In and it tells u if Pontiac or chev. An what yr also 2or 4 bolt. Can't remember the website just google for engine no. Identification for lt1

Shoebox has the info for decoding the partial VIN on the block. It will show Chevy or Pontiac, but it doesn't appear to tell you if the Chevy was an F-Body, Corvette or SS/Caprice. This would be the partial VIN from the vehicle the engine was originally installed in. I suspect the "replacement" engines will be marked differently or not marked at all.

Click on the link I posted and you will see that is does have a letter code for the year.
