View Full Version : Weirdest thing … AFR Base Castings
I ran across a set of AFR 210 heads.

Exactly what I have ALWAYS WANTED… (Who doesn't, right?)
24096
Nice, huh?

Mmmm…

I don't know if this will remain sharp enough for everyone to make out, but in the shadow of the port, if you zoom all the way in, you'll see a little hole about the size of the end of your pinky.
Meaning that they're 'base castings', which until a few days ago I didn't even know ya could buy. But I ran across an add and the seller had a set and, in short, we negotiated what I consider to be a fair deal for what are; without CNC porting, little more than replicas of a set of AFR 210 heads and, are otherwise absolutely worthless.
Too big for paperweights, too light for a boat anchor…
But after going back and forth and speaking to all parties from manufacturer to speciality, performance porters, namely Lloyd Elliot I now own them and the seller is shipping them straight to Lloyd.
I don't know of anyone in the LT performance world that is better known than Lloyd Elliot and no one with a better reputation for producing good, soundly structured power, so, in what will most likely be a matter of months, I will hopefully have a brand new set of Lloyd Elliot ported AFR 210 LT Heads.
I'm am so proud of this, I am telling ya that such would embarrass a peacock.
At this moment in time, this is the only way that I was going to get those heads… and it just fell right into my lap.
It's amazing…

So were these built to be custom ported?

They look to me at least. There as cast heads intended to be ported by a shop. Several companies have these like eddy, dart, and now I guess afr.
Many race teams get these in this form. So they can have them machined exactly how they want them.
OP good buy there going to be monsters when LE is done with them:)
My understanding is that they're the same heads as any other AFR, just taken out of production before CNC'ing. My first call to AFR said that some guys buy them 'base', specifically to send directly to their porter… my second contact with AFR (after I had paid for the heads), completely changed gears and said in no uncertain terms that I should get my money back and to not pursue any attempt to port them. (LOL! This email coming in, LITERALLY, as I am parked on the side of the return road down at the track, having busted yet another tranny mount… talk about a downer moment…)
So, I emailed the seller, telling him that we had a problem, and went straight back to the mountain to be sure… Lloyd said he's got no problem with porting them up and, says it will be a minimum of a grand to get it done; then of course the valve train sets in.
I'm a little anxious, but with LE's assurance… that's down to something well within the tolerable zone. He'll have them in hand next week and we'll see what he says once he takes a look at 'em. But as long as the seller's photos are of the same heads, I think we're on our way to something special… I mean I gotta believe at this point, as there's just nothin' else to hold on to.
Oh thank you brother… "From your keyboard to God's screen", I could sure use the break…

So what do you plan on doing with them? you have the 195s and wanted to step up to the 210s right?
Yezzer… that's the plan.
I don't have the resources to just pop for a 2500 set of heads, all in one stroke… so, like so many other things with this car, nature just provides the means to step through it.
So far, I've got $600 down range, heads and shipping to LE. Next week we find out what the second bite is going to feel like.

Patience is a virtue my friend :). just do it right the first time and don't cut any corners with the heads. Have you considered talking to Lloyd about having him grinding you a cam for the new set of heads. quite a bit of power I think you will be picking up. What are the specs on that 292xfi that you're currently running

Yes! I have asked Lloyd to spec us up a cam for these guys, once he has 'em where he wants 'em. Also, if he feels that it would produce a positive result, I've asked him if he wants me to send him the LT4 intake in for some 'match it all up', lovin'.

that's a line of bull shit to cover their ass. its very common for high end head guys to buy rough cast heads and go to town. even if they break into a water port they just weld it up and keep on cutting. they also do port intruders(head bolt sleeve) on the intake sides when they cut through were the head bolt is.
not the best pic but you can just see the side it the sleeve

Thank you... And I completely agree. From what I know of him, you can take what Lloyd Elliot tells you, to the bank.
Lloyd tells me that he can port those heads to produce the power that he has built his reputation producing and I unabashedly believe him. It's as simple as that.
