My cousin is concerned that he needs to run leaded...or a lead additive in his new 73 camaro because he found a container of lead additive in the glove box.....
Old cars can run straight unleaded...right?

Depends. Some may need to correct me but its in the heads. Hardened exhaust seats or somethin.

Yes he will want to run an additive if its the original engine from a leaded era. The seats would wear on valves and the lead is used as a lubricant from what I understand

If the motor is from 73 then yes he needs to. But some older guys still run a lead add. in todays motors. Running unleaded in a motor that needs leaded is bad. Running leaded in a motor that runs on unleaded no prob.

Unfortunately the only way to know for sure if the valve seats have ever been replaced would be to remove the heads. If they've ever had work done to them they most likely have had hardened seats added.

So what will happen if he does nor run additive

If he doesn't run the additive and he has the original non-hardened valve seats it will accelerate the wear between the valve and valve seat. Eventually it would cause lack of sealing and low compression problems. If for some reason the previous owner thought because the car was a 197x and needed it but the engine or heads had been worked on in the last 30 years, nothing will happen. Its been a standard practice to replace valve seats on vehicles requiring leaded fuel for quite some time now. Unless this car was touted as a numbers matching, all original car id say theyve been changed.
You know I just thought about it and I've got an old tractor from the 50's that I know has never had work done to it and I run unleaded through it. I wonder just how long it would take to ruin the seats...
Another thing, he could pull a valve cover and check the casting number on the heads. May be a newer set from the unleaded era anyways...

It will toast the heads. Chewing up the valves, seats ect. It will be a domino effect. Making him need to rebuild the whole head

Yea start by having him find out the head cast numbers.

But till he does...its not like if he mis mixes...or skips a tank with mix in it that anything will likely happen...if indeed the heads have the soft seats/guides/thingies?
