Starting a build thread for Osie's 94 camaro. Bought with a dead fuel pump for 1100 bones, woman owned 130k on it.
23106
trap-door fuel pump swap, fired it right up. car still has original plugs, wires, opti etc from 9/93 build date. had to lose those damn wheels though.
23107
23108
car made 241.3 whp pulling max knock retard on dyno at LTX Tech Dyno Day. Only mods were Spectre Elbow, Moroso CAI, and the Flowcrapster single exit catback.

things were talked about and ideas were bounced around over beers, many times. i kept telling him to do bolt-ons and cruise around for the summer. But, my father inlaw was very undecided with what to do. his original intentions with the car were to fix it up, clean it up, and flip it for money to go towards the nova project. the more he drove it, the more he liked it. the handling, way the power is delivered, how nicely it cruises. the nova was supposed to get lsx swapped, and he has driven lsx cars before, but he just fell in love with the LT1. now thats getting LTX swapped. the big deciding day was the Fourth of July, when we decided to a) celebrate it redneck style with burnouts infront of the house, and b) to see if his car would even do a burnout. the vid speaks for itself. First car is him, Second car is me.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3NpSebFgkK4
We came back up to the house, he said give me a beer, and then what do we need for a cam swap. he had got a cam from another member when we bought the lt1 for the nova. so then, the tumbleweed effect started.
there is now a pile of parts with basically everything we need to do the heads/cam build on the stock bottom end.
Bullet cam spec'd by LE .592/.592 w/1.6rr on a 110, 228/234 duration

Cahall Performance Transmission Race spec trans with new cooler

up in the air is a bigger fuel pump since this one is brandy-new, and gears. May go with a 3.42 with a Ta performance cover and stud kit. He also might buy the same Baer brakes i have. Midwest Chassis subframe connectors and rear suspension tidbits are the few parts left on the table, and will be purchased after its running again. car is being built to have some snot, be fun to drive, wherever, whenever, and to play a little bit when i get mine built up.

LE2 heads installed. ran into a problem. ARP 134-7101 rocker studs are too long on the portion that threads into the head. would either need to cut or get ones that are slightly shorter, which is what we are going to do. supposedly comp rocker studs are ok. heads are ON! which takes a big weight off my shoulders.

alright well after a few days of playing with things, some things are still acting up. first i had a right bank lean o2 code, swapped o2 sensor and cleared that. now i have a issue with the blm's climbing up on both banks to the 190's and the o2 voltages staying low, high 100's-low 200's. also, after swapping the o2 and maf, i suddenly had the car start dropping rpm on its own while the map kpa increased until it threw a high map code. it idled out and then went back into closed loop when everything settled. i also noticed when this happened the maf afgs reading increased value. i checked EVERTYHING to try to fix the blms and the issue, checked for vacuum leaks multiple times, came up with nothing.
if anyone can review my datamaster log, post up and ill email it to you. thanks

ran fine in open loop. i still have some playing to do tomorrow, gotta slot the tps sensor and get the voltage down and get the iac counts up a little higher. also gonna raise the idle rpm, i think 800 may be a little low for all the airflow going on.

same thing that happens every time it goes into open loop and ignores the closed loop sensors, it runs better. i had two people (one of them owns a tuning/dyno shop) suggest putting it in speed density mode, but i dont wanna go that route yet without a wideband.
sweet-94z28
11-08-2013, 09:52 PM
I would be willing to bet that once you get an exhaust / y pipe on the car it will run fairly good. The O2s are getting a lot of fresh air with open headers. I say there's no reason to run the car in speed density mode IMO.

We have been lazy with this car, ran out
Of injector at only 5k rpm on the Dyno, the 2.73 gear is killin the power, and there was a bad knock module in it. At 5200 rpm it made 360 and the curve was goin up up up, so with the 3.42's, svo green tops and a good tune seeing how high it will go
Flyinz
05-24-2014, 08:08 AM
Does it have the factory knock module in it? Or have you switched to an LT4 module?
SSlowBoat
05-24-2014, 08:12 AM
Bad lt4 knock module, put a stock non lt4 module back in it and its fine.
Researched a little bit, early revision computers have had issues with lt4 modules picking up more false knock. Thats what we have computer wise.
SSlowBoat
08-09-2014, 09:09 PM
Ltconvert said the brakes were lacking with the new found power. 20 year old stock brakes will do that. Also, the 2.73 rear was holding the motor back big time unless you were up over 5k rpm. So, we found a 3.42 10 bolt with a truetrac that's in really good shape, new calipers lines and slotted rotors for rear, and some big boy brakes on the front.

What size tires on the back?
as of right now its 245/40/17 front and 275/35/18 rear. @Ltconvert (http://ltxtech.com/forums/member.php?u=6566) isnt a fan of the tires (nitto invo) and he wants something fatter under the back. trying to convince him to go with a toyo r1r in 305 or 315 in the back and 275 front
popo8
10-18-2014, 10:33 PM
Thats a good size. Just remember the wider up front the more the car wants to "track" with the imperfections of the road. Thats the only complaint of my 275s on the front.
The vette has 285s up front and is just as bad.
SSlowBoat
10-18-2014, 10:37 PM
he had 275's all the way around on the ss wheels, so he is use to it. the wheels kinda look funny with the skinnier tires. sidewall almost bows in towards the tread. but, with how he is, these might be saved for the nova since it makes the camaro look like a 4x4 lol

first start. charge piping not installed yet. still waiting on tune, fuel pump, and a few other things. this was just to make sure the procharger oil lines were tight, didnt leak, and drained back properly. so far so good, just time consuming, especially when buying a used kit and it being outdated by 10 years. after talking to a few people i think we are gonna leave the maf in place for now. may or may not go full speed density. this older twin intercooler kit is gonna be fun. same kit as in this picture.31060

He wasn't 100% long enough to tell if it was just him wiggling his foot, or if the computer was making changes and it was catching up. Two of the pulls afr at 100% was 11.6-11.7. That's pretty good. Other pull was 100%-91%-81%-97% and the afr went from 12.8-11.7-12.6.-12.2-12.7.

Congrats man. That was one QUICK pull.
Thank you. I did the math and it comes out to like 24% slippage at 5400-6400 rpm. I don't like how the dynocom dyno loads the car, and it also doesn't have a spark input to monitor torque. So the numbers are just that, skewed numbers. Torque probably from the multiplication of the converter, and hp from the slip.
Afr dialed in for now. So all in all it was worth it. It will still go to jd's at some point, but he has to get the rest of the whipple stuff from firebird_1995. Also, I have to thank Chris and @sweet_94z28 with tuning help late into the night trying to richen this thing up so we didn't hurt it.

Nope. But the big puff of smoke on the dyno scared me. He went for a ride that day, did a big ass rolling burnout, and parked it. It was decided a week ago to not gamble with it, and I just started it to spin it around in garage and throw it on the cribs, and noticed ALOT of blowby out the breather. Already pulled pistons, no cracks, bores looked good. Motor is becoming a 383 anyway. My question is about the exhaust guides having oil on them inside the ports. Also, the rotating of the valves and the valve tips having marks on them. http://tapatalk.imageshack.com/v2/15/01/14/f31952a55caad111de2e3f6ed74265a2.jpghttp://tapatalk.imageshack.com/v2/15/01/14/6295296f416840c6bc2b6e198814b2e9.jpghttp://tapatalk.imageshack.com/v2/15/01/14/ed3e895c828af2c89750f442c3554f10.jpg

strange on the valve tips.
What cam was that in the car?
What lifters?
What kinda preload?
If thiose are the LE1 heads that you bought from me they had 165 lbs on the seat for your boosted set up and that should be fine unless they are Comp R lifters, rockers too tight or a cam with real aggressive lobes.
160-165 lbs on seat with good lifters adjusted properly should be stable to 7000 RPM with 15 psi of boost with one of the blower cams that we do.
As fara s the seals, I would think that it would make other gaskets (valve cover, oil pan, etc) leak a lil also if there is that much pressure in the engine to push oil past valve guide seals too but I am not sure.

Bullet 228/234 592/592 on on a 110lsa, ls7 lifters, 3/4 turn, scorpion 1.6 sa rockers (which the rollers look fine on). These were LE2 heads done under Goodman in 10/13, not LE1's. NightTrain66

I bet thatw as valve float then.
those lobhes are pretty aggressive and need quite a bit of pressure N/A
Once you add 10 PSI of boost you have 10 psi of pressure on the back of intake valves trying toi hold them open and that will eat up about 25 lbs of seat pressure.
More boost pressure would eat up even more spring pressure.
If the heads and the cam were not set up for a boosted set up (extra seat pressure on springs and slower ramp speed on closing side of intake lobe) floating the valves would be a DEFINITE possobility/probability.
As fara s the blow by causing oil to come thru the guides/seals, it makes sense that this could happen but I ahve never had a car with severe blow by diagnosed and tore down looking for that. Once the blow by was realized (broke piston, etc) the engine was always tore down an completely went thru so i never chased problems like that or looked for culprits.
Was there any oil pushed or dripped thru at oil pan, timing cover, valve cover gaskets, etc?

No, nothing pushing out of gaskets, just the breather really badly. It only saw 7 psi. everyone had us scared we broke something since blah blah blah, but in reality, it probably wasn't a big deal. Oh well. I will be using that cam in my impala. Thing is, there could've been float before the boost from what you are saying. What springs am I going to need to handle it na? Those lunati's? Patriots? Etc.
NightTrain66
01-15-2015, 11:19 PM
If the heads are LE2 heads and have Lunati 73925 or Patriot dbl springs on them they should have plenty of pressure for N/A. I would have set them up at 155 lbs on th seat when the springs were new but they can lose a lil pressure.
The 228/234 .592/.592 lobes will need 140 lbs of pressure to remain stable with perfect rocker geometry, perfect PR length, perfect lifter preload, etc, The more these things are off, the more pressure needed to remain stable.
Add 7 psi of boost and that will eat up 14-20 lbs of seat pressure causing valve float if the spring doesnt have that extra 14-20 lbs of opressure to lose.
Springs can also lose a lil pressure also.
If the guides and seals were bad it would have had a lil puff of oil smoke out of tail pipe on start up and get pretty gunky in the ports and hedaers pretty quick. If thats not there then i would assume the seals were in good shape for a long time and just recently went bad if they are bad. Maybe the boost/blowby effected the seals if they are now bad. ???
There are videos of "valve float" on Youtube and you can see the valve stem doing crazy things and wear guides pretty quickly depending on how bad it is. Some of those videos are to the extreme and parts would break pretty quickly under that trauma in some of the videos but it does at least show what kinda stuff is going on even though it is to a myuch lesser degree.

email me a pic of the springs and I'll knmow what they are.
just have them checked to see what pressure they currently have and I would put them back at 155 lbs on the seat if they are not there now. that will be fine for that 228/234 .592/.592 cam N/A.

Just dropped the splayed 4 bolt 383 block off to Karl Ellwein, he is gonna work his magic on it. About to drop off the Camaro trans for upgrades and my trans to be built to Cahall and say hi to the pups.
Great seeing you and Osie today. 1 update and one more Pro Race 4L60E on deck.

They are anti obd1 lt1, like everyone else. There is somewhere else we could go, but time is of the essence. I'll baby it and watch the afr, if it looks like shit, it won't get dynoed or it will be limited in rpm.

I gotta call them again, but I doubt we are gonna have time. We may run it just on motor for break in. No idea yet.
Tune shouldn't be that far off though. It was very safe before. Honestly, I think the pcv/catch can setup had issues, and that's why we had what happened happen, that and along with everyone saying it's dead etc etc because no one has faith in stock bottom ends led us to this. That motor was fine, it was a blowby issue that wasn't really an issue. Shouldn't have ran an open breather, especially with a maf sensor. Live and learn though. Should be a whole Lotta mean soon.

Really? Why not? I run an open breather.

It's a vacuum leak. It allows unmetered air into the engine after the maf. I researched it extensively, and spoke to more than one person on here about it. It can cause split blm issues.
popo8
03-08-2015, 12:19 PM
Wonder why i have none of those issues
SSlowBoat
03-08-2015, 12:22 PM
Taken from another forum :" it allows unmetered air to be sucked in the open breather and then it bypasses the MAF and goes into the intake via the PCV valve on the back of the intake manifold. If you want to run an open breather, you need to plug the port on the intake where the PCV connects to."
Albeit it's a small amount of air, but it does do it. I put it back before we pulled the motor apart and the blm's at idle were alot better.

Yes, so was ours, valve cover leads to lifter valley, where pcv pulls from. Technically, you should run a catch can on the pcv then down to the supercharger inlet, and also eliminate the breather and run a hose from valve cover to supercharger inlet. Says it right in prochargers instructions.

Lol... well im goin on a decade of none of that... no issues.

In theory.

Right but wouldn't the tuner scale everything accordingly...even with the leak? I agree the tune will be thrown off if you add unmetered air to a system that was tuned as closed.

From what I was told, speed density= open breathers. Maf=closed pcv system.

karl just let me know he is picking up the crank tomorrow. there is a small chance he can get it together, but if he runs into a problem, its not gonna happen. either way, we greatly appreciate Karl's dedication to trying to make the deadline, with honestly only having a short period of time to work on it with his very busy schedule on his end. He is a very meticulous builder, leaving nothing to chance, and we have the utmost respect for him. he constantly updates you on your build, and is very honest. hard to find that now adays in people in general. if you want the best, have Ellwein Engines build you a motor.

Timing chain was too worn and gears were too worn. For anyone that looks for a spline drive timing set it's a nightmare, and expensive, so you're better off upgrading to the 95-97 opti. Well the cam pin has to be shortened for the early setup, now he couldn't get it out
popo8
