I had an old shitty side mount engine stand. Something similar to this. http://www.circletracksupply.com/images/P/L-06.jpg Then I bolted that to a palet and put wood blocks all the way around the outside and built walls with plywood cut to size. All screwed together so that the next person can take it apart.

Mine (my first one) wa strapped to a pallet with supports...and the whole thing was super shrunk wrapped together.

Just bought an engine strapped to a pallet and truck freighted from florida to to chicago area for $185. If you ship that is the best way to do it. It is cheaper to ship from a business to a business fyi. If going to a residence it will cost more due to having to ship on a truck with a lift gate. Just a heads up.
