Never really looked at myself in that light. One of my friends and coworkers came by this morning, as he was having trouble with the brakes on the rear of his Jeep. He had leaking wheel cylinders, but when he went to replace them the line nuts and lines wouldn't separate, and as he tried to loosen them it was just twisting the lines.

So I took a look, said I have about 100 feet of the correct 3/16 brake line, and know right where to get the right 3/16" tube nut to do the job. Rather than use unions I said let me just make new lines. So after about an hour of bending, flaring, and tweaking, he's got two new lines from the rear distribution block to each rear wheel cylinder.

As I was installing them, I was on the drivers side line and said "Wow.....I'm really happy with how that one came out."

As which point he says "Well, you are a professional right? So why wouldn't you be happy with it?"

I honestly didn't know how to react because I've NEVER though of myself as a professional in what I do. More of a hobbyist than anything. Truth be told I was kind of flattered.

Not really a customer. Just a buddy I was helping out. We're good like that. He stayed with us for 3 months from August to November while he sold/bought his house during a PCS, and he's lending us his extra vehicle (96 Dakota) while we're getting the Celica fixed since we were down to 1 car. I was going to do his lines for free and he insisted on dropping some money on my counter. Truth be told I have yet to look at what he left even.

if you still enjoy working on your vehicles then i would have to classify you as a hobbyist....reason why, i have been a mechanic for about 6 years now and it started as me loving to work on cars...so hell its a win win right? no, after so long of being a mechanic you just don't want any thing to do with cars once you come home from work...my car has now been parked for about 2 months, ive got plenty of stuff to do to it but so far ive disconnected the battery Thats IT. i have just lost all motivation to work on cars out of and in work. hell i use to be all about changing oil every 2000 miles and now i cant even rember the last time i did it....quess i just need to get my motivation back.
