View Full Version : the wife wanted it....

So I delivered! My wife has hinted here or there about wanting either a 3rd gen camaro or a 4th gen firebird for a little bit now. She feels left out since we have 2 camaros in the driveway. So I found a fairly decent shape 96 formula auto for real cheap with a bad head gasket. No coolant in oil, and tbh, I'm not even believing totally that its a head gasket issue. Could be, won't know till I get it home. Going to pick it up Saturday. Black with t-tops. Needs a few baths and a wax. For the price I'm paying, even if its blown up we could use enough parts off it.

the back story from the kid is low coolant light came on and temp gauge went high, but not to red. he parked it at home cause he thought he blew something up ( very unknowledgable) and his brother looked at it and just found low coolant, nothing else, no leak or smoke nothing. 3 days later it happened again with supposedly a little white smoke from exhaust....

mind you it was cold out when this happened.....white smoke? stock waterpump with 170k..... BONE stock car. stock exhaust intake air filter everything....

and its home now. it started when i put my battery in it. check engine light on, flashed some then stopped flashing. also, security light on. oh yeah, the SMOKE SHOW. head gasket has to be gone, think its drowning out a cylinder. it smokes like a good burnout, and coolant/water mix drips from exhaust......

firebird_1995

"We got a bleeder!" Like Larry said, make sure the bottom end looks ok, no chewed up bearings from running with water in the oil, no bent rods for trying to start it with a pint of water in the cylinder. If everything looks good it can most likely be bored out. But a machinist will have to make that call.

popo8
08-04-2013, 04:36 PM
I will go one step further.. and I know its a major short cut.. but for the cost of just having the heads done and some good gaskets.. as long as no carnage... get the heads done and put it back together.. If it pops again in a year.. pull the motor... but if not.. RUNNING...DRIVING ....car

firebird_1995
08-04-2013, 05:03 PM
Was there rust in the cylinder? I seen the orange water in the cylinder and assumed it was rust water but I guess it could have been dexcool. If rust, it will pit the walls enough to bleed off compression and burn oil. If there was no rust, then you can take a chance at it. Here's my opinion though. If you are pulling the pan, the bearings are looking you square in the eyes. Might as well spend the money and change them. Rings? Well, I might get crucified for this but before taking the rods loose, spray the walls in wd40 and roll the engine around several times to let the rings polish up the wall that had the funk in it. If it shines up decent and doesn't leave any spots that are dull, id throw a new set of rings in without honing it. Now its running, driving, rebuilt, for about $300.

He texted me earlier that the walls looked good... I should have clarified that, before it sounded like I was saying just slap it together... lol

SSlowBoat

Walls look good all the way across. There is no rust it's dexcool. No bent valves or rods. No marring on pistons. I just got the other head off after fighting for 3 hours with these damn stock manifolds. Quick question: don't you have to resize the mains and rods for new bearings? If I pull the rod caps or mains off and all is ok do I need new bolts? I'm really uncomfortable doing the bottom end. Never did one.

firebird_1995
08-04-2013, 06:33 PM
You can get new bearings in standard (stock) size. No resizing necessary. Was there water I'm the oil?

SSlowBoat
08-04-2013, 07:43 PM
Not sure if it was dexcool or condensation in the oil

SSlowBoat

Well I've decided to pull the short block and throw It on the stand. I'd rather be safe then sorry. Just gonna have the block checked, get a federal mogul rebuild kit for a 355, hot cam kit, and put it back together. The wife wants it that way. From my findings it looks like the motor was apart before for head gaskets, and half the head bolts were crazy tight and some were loose. All the exhaust manifold bolts were some hardware store bolts. I am having the heads checked as well

There shouldnt be any scoring or dull coloring on the crank journals. It may have run with water in the oil for a while. Around here its only $125 to turn a crank.

The new engine is coming from a trusted person, he sold a impala ss to a friend and that cars trans went shortly after, so he bought this car running fine just for the trans because he felt bad. Motor has 114k, no oil leaks. Clean.

Hahhahahahahhahaa

Yes its purple, i was gonna do the intake purple but want to have it powdercoated instead of rattlecanned, so next build it will be matching.

I had pink valvecovers before, when frank said he had a purple pump i had to have it.

Quick recap: had to rig in a relay quick for waterpump, for whatever reason using the air injection relay didnt work. Filled and bled coolant. Fired off first turn of key with open headers at 11 lol, thankfully i live in the middle of nowhere. Let it cool and threw y pipe and bullet on, fired it up again to double check things, and the vid above was after it warmed up. That idle puts a smile on my face.

holy shit. well I sold the car to get the impala back in 2014. the person I sold it to sold it in 2015 to another guy. well we have been in contact and I went and looked at it today with the possible idea of buying it back

I don't think I'm going to. the nostalgia is there, car still runs healthy as hell with the miles on the motor, but damn. paint is so far gone, t tops now leak, the good tires I had on it are gone. I don't know..... he wants 2500, what I sold it for 3 years ago. I think it's worth max 1500 just for the parts on ithttps://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20171127/4690065595585ead76839bf6780a11a3.jpghttps://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20171127/05ffe68e616e3480eb2de00e6c4e64a8.jpg

Is that the paint on the front or is that mud? If that's the paint, no way it's worth $2500.
