View Full Version : Tweeters Flush mount in the A-Pillars, not truly possible?

I've seen quite a few pics online of people flush mounting tweeters in the a-pillar panels in the triangle section that goes forward above the dash. I pulled my passenger side panel today and laid the tweeter housing on it (1" tweeter, 2" housing). There is no way a tweeter will mount flush there. The panel is not totally flat. No matter where I try, if I rock the tweeter housing back and forth there is a huge gap either way.

How are people successfully flush mounting tweeters here? All of the pics I've seen didn't involve any fiberglassing, masonite, or mods to make them fit, yet the tweeters were perfectly flush in the pillar. I'm afraid to break out the hole saw and have an ugly result.

I decided to mount my crossovers behind the kick panels, to avoid having to run multiple wires through the door grommet/boot, which I'd have to do with tweeters in the side mirror triangles. Having the tweeters on the a-pillars would make things much easier, as the tweeter wires can run behind the edge of the dash, behind the kick panel, and stay hidden.

mine are in custom fiberglass pods.

6LE also makes a set but I cant speak on how they fit or what the quality is. Most of his stuff is pretty good though.

I have the tweeter pods. They are installed but I haven't put tweeters in yet. Install was pretty straight forward and they look fairly good. I'll post a pic later if you want

I was looking at the 6LE ones. Is there enough surface area there to cut them out/file them larger (2.1")? It says they fit up to 1 3/4" tweeter mounts. I already tried angle mounting one of my tweets in the mirror sail. It would have worked, but then I'd have to run more wires wire through the door grommet. It was hard enough running a large "twisted pair" type speaker wire (knukonceptz karma) where both wires go through a larger jacket.

Let me take some close ups. You may be able to sand the edges to open it up more, but for a $75 pair of plastic I'd be cautious. I got mine off a friend for 30 who won a pair in a raffle at The gathering a few years ago.

You could definitely open it up a little bit. And put a deeper tweeter in but you may have to cut that bolt thing back some

Cool, much appreciated. I would assume that area is where it goes forward of the edge of the dash pad. There appears to be some depth there, but anywhere up higher, I'd be bottoming out on the metal.

Thanks for the pics! My tweeters aren't all that deep. Would you say there's another 1/2" or so, that the opening could be widened?

1/4" more would be pushing it. (1/2" more I'm diameter) . That's about as far as I'd go

I forget the depth of mine there cutting it close but they are nice. it would be nice to find some gm tweeter covers of a Silverado or something to put on there I am not a fan of the flashy ones I got from pioneer I belive they are their d series or the a series what ever one is better lol. I should be getting my car baack from the body shop this week hopfully Tuesday, if you want when I get it back I will try to get some measurments to were I drilled my holes

Thanks for the info. Looks like I won't be able to use the pods for any of my tweeters. Maybe my CDT tweeters, but I hate the way those sound. I'm guessing the 6LE pods are designed for nothing over 3/4". With their flush mount housings, most would come out close to 1 3/4"

Yeah, I don't understand why so many tweeter/component manufacturers make theirs all bling bling. I don't want a gaudy silver or chrome trim ring, or some alien looking flared tweeter housing. I have an old pair of Image Dynamics NX30 tweeters, which originally came with a set of 5 1/4" chameleon components. FWIR these things are awesome. 890Hz free air resonance, 900-25,000Hz Frequency response, and will take as low as 1600hz crossover point. I still have their crossovers as well, so I will probably use these. I'm not sure if they originally came with different hardware, but I only have flush mounting cups for them. So I guess that seals the deal that I will be butchering my A-Pillars :P At least they are dirt cheap at the junk yards. They might be harder to find for T-Tops, though.

Also, FWIW, I have always liked the Pioneer REV series. Back when I had my 94 Z28, (years and years ago) I had a set of 6.5" REV coaxials. They really sounded amazing. They used the yellow colored Polyester tweeters. The highs were so smooth, and they went down to 30hz. I believe they were the TS-D160R series, which have been replaced by the TS-D1602R, and TS-A1605C components.

Whenever u can get me those measurements, it would be appreciated. I have decided to go the flush mount route and use my Image Dynamics NX30 tweeters/Crossovers
