View Full Version : Oil pressure woes. Only when braking.

I'm thinking I'm having an oiling issue. I have been taking it easy on the car since the h/c swap and haven't really had any issue with it. It currently has 80 miles on it with the new set up. When the car starts up, it holds pressure just fine, right around 45psi, when it warms up to operating temp, it idles around 20psi but when I brake hard, it drops down to ~10 psi. Im running conventional 10 w30 before switching it back to synthetic with a larger oil filter. I do have a small dent in the pan, it is not low on oil. I'm trying to figure out what would be causing this. Maybe the pick up is partially clogged? I think the psi is normal except for dropping that low when I brake. I have not taken it to wot yet, still taking it easy.
has anyone had this issue? Any ideas?

The pick up has probably fallen off. Happens all the time

Oooohh....that would be awesome if that happened. I will give her a look. Do I need to drain the oil?

Yes... Draim the oil...
Smack the pan with ur fist... Odds are u will hear it bounce in there.
FIX = Pull pan...re install...tack weld in place.

You would have to pull the pan, which in the car sucks. I'd replace the spring with a 70psi spring and put on a pickup tube hold down. If you don't have a welder

I bought a LT1 off of craigslist and once we got it on an engine stand, we turned it over and heard a huge clunk. I thought it might've had a grenaded bottom end lol. Turned out to just be the pick up tube had fallen off. Will definitely be welding it before it go's back in

While changing the oil pump isn't necessary, this is another option

Comes with the high pressure spring installed, pickup tube welded on, hardened drive rod and a stud and nut. For $50 its worth it.

How bad is it to drive it like this? I'm debating trying to do this in my garage on jack stands or driving about 6 miles to my buddies shop with a lift.

Fwiw I drove mine about a week till I got it up in the air to do it. Its not to much of a pita if you can raise the engine up a bit with a support then turn the crank as you remove the pan for clearance

Checking the oil tomorrow. If it is the pick up, we are probably looking at a new stock pan, the assembly Chris posted, and a new oils pan gasket?

You dont need a new pan unless yours is damaged for some reason

In my first post I mentioned it has a dent in it. I suspect that cold be the reason the pick up fell off.

Your old pan should be alright as long as it doesn't get mangled coming out.

Ignore the fram oil filter, only used it for the initial start up.

Well, I'm doing this next weekend. Is the stock oil pan gasket reusable? Or should I get a new one. Pretty low miles. If not, which one shall I get for the stock pan.

I'd get a new one. I believe they're only $25. The new ones are that nice new blue permatorque stuff that doesn't require rtv and I'll probably get chastised for this but I rtv both sides of the gasket on the outermost edge as well. I got burnt way too many times on those old school cork gaskets to trust any oil retaining gasket unfortunately. I'd really like to try one without rtv one time but I hate hate HATE leak.....
After I set the pan down and get it torqued down, I go back and push all the excess rtv into the space between the pan and block and smooth it out. You don't have to do it like that, that's just how I do it. Like I said, I got trust issues with gaskets lol

So I'm guessing just a standard fel pro SBC gasket is the wAy to go?

Oil pressure woes fixed. The pick up was not actually off in the pan, but was pressed up in such a way that the dent was almost completely flush with the screen, making contact. New pump and dent hammered out no issues.
now,mid I can only figure out the brown coolant.
99.9% positive not oil! Engine oil is clean, tranny oil is clean and both have no signs of coolant. In them. The car sat for a long long time open to the elements with the heads and water pump off. I'm positive it's still rust. I just need to figure out how to clean it out.

I've done 2, one of which we hooked up some contraption my buddies has that you hook up to a hose and an air compressor that flushes it. The car sat for a good period of time with the water pump off (4 years) and the coolant drained. I have had a suggestion of a good friend and mechanic of 35 years that there is a cleaner out there that can be used for rust in coolant systems, but he couldn't remember what it is. I think I may need to go that route.
