View Full Version : T56 Swap Progress

About a month ago I decided to pull the trigger on my T56 swap for my LT1. I had no problem with the 4L60E, but I really just missed rowing through the gears. Anyways, I figured I would just throw this thread up to show some of my progress along the way. It has been slow lately because of because of my funds (college student lol), but will be picking up again this week. I wanted to drop both the engine and the tranny out because I had a few things I wanted to do with the motor as well. I know almost everyone says not to waste the money on putting 4.10's in the 10 bolt, but I just don't have the money right now to spend on a Moser or Strange unit. My car won't be seeing the drag strip for quite awhile so I'm hoping they will last me awhile.
Here's some of my plans for the swap:
-Sending the T56 off to Tick Performance for their Level 1 Rebuild
-Having 4.10's installed in my current 10 bolt by Quick Performance in Ames
-Competition Clutch kit? Stage 2/2.5?
-Cheap Autozone flywheel
-Wiring up my A4 harness instead of putting in an M6 Harness
-PCMForLess will tune my A4 PCM
I got most of the stuff I needed for my swap from one guy off of LS1tech. Worked out pretty good and made it a lot easier on me.
Pulled everything out

You are certainly committed at this point, take your time as funds become available. It may take quite a while, but the end result will be nice :) I only did 3.73's in mine, and don't go to the track, but so far the rear hasn't given me any issues. One of the lucky ones perhaps LOL.

Yeah I definitely won't be hitting the track lol. How do you like your 3.73's?

Sometimes I regret not doing 4.10's, but it gets up very good with the 3.73's. first gear is still usable as well, hardly ever NEED to go to 6th

Yeah I have a feeling that 1st won't be very usable with 4.10's. It's not my dd anyway so I guess it won't be that big of a deal

Quick update: No new pics yet, but I did haul my rear end to Quick Performance today. So far they have been great guys to work with. They warned me about the 10 bolt being a weak rear end which was old news to me obviously. I just told them that I can't afford their custom 9" at the time. They will be installing Motive 4.10's, a complete differential bearing kit, and replacing the axle bearings and seals. I figured while they were in there, they might as well replace them.

Yeah I can't wait to get everything back together. I'm really anxious to see the difference the 4.10's will make.

Thanks. It makes things a little easier. Almost wish it was a little bit bigger at times. It can get pretty crowded with all these car parts laying around Lol.

Alright so good news guys...I finally got my T56 swap finished up yesterday and it drives great. The swap took me so long because I was waiting for my tranny to get back from being rebuilt. Anyways here is a list of some of the parts I ended up getting:
Stage 1 Rebuild by Tick Performance
Competition Clutch Stage 2
New stock replacement flywheel
4.10 gears (Installed by Quick Performance in Ames, IA)
MGW Short Throw Shifter
White Hurst 6-Speed Shift Knob
PCM re-tuned by PCMforless
And now for some pictures
T56 after I got it back from Tick Performance

I got lazy with the picture taking midway through the project as you can see. Can't really get a lot done when I have to stop to take pictures every 20 minutes. Overall, the swap wasn't difficult at all. The only reason it took me as long as it did was because I was waiting for my transmission for a month. It took my dad and I two days once I got my transmission back to get everything back in the car and on the road. I will post up some videos here in a little bit

Yeah that's my friends 97' Firebird. Parked it out in front of our house with a "for sale" sign on it since we have a lot of traffic that goes by
