View Full Version : Raising power band with AFR 180's?

As some may know. Im buying Call911's ported AFR 180's. My plan has been to build a FI 383 with D1SC or F1....

But i know Call911 was having issues with the heads choking his 383 at 6,000 rpm. My thought is to go with a 355 and bring my usable power band above 6,000 rpm.

I can return my compstar 3.75 for a 3.48. With no issues since it hasnt been worked on or used. I know i will lose some lower end power. And i am fine with that. But would like to spin higher. Any thought or input?

And sorry if question is dumb. Still on learning curve with boost

I think that's a sound way to go. Well thought out, maximize what you're going to be working with.

That is what i like to hear. I want to hit around the 650whp mark. But higher power band is more important for me. And I can make up for the power with the weight of my car. I don't really drag my car. But plan to do Texas mile when its done.

Now another big question. I got a victor E intake and nitrous outlet elbow. Should i upgrade to a mono blade. Or stick with the tpis 58mm i have? Or will it be pointless with the 300cfm the heads flow? Induction gets a little shady for me with boost.

Fastbird and Call911 was there when they was flow benched. And they was hitting just shy of 300cfm. Beyond cleaning them. I have no plans to change anything.

The shop around me is less then consistent with the numbers they get. So i have no plans to flow test them again.

IIRC these heads were around 290 @ .600, but that was back in 2006 also. If that's inaccurate then my LE TFS heads that flowed 305 @ .600 are inaccurate too. And my head numbers are right in line with others.

I would wait before CALL911 dynos his car and then take it with a grain of salt as he made a few other changes.

I would run a 383 under them, its a lot easier to swap heads later on than to swap cranks.

That's why i will go buy your info. I trust the info is accurate.

My car will be seeing 6,000+ pulls. And at times longer then a typical car sees in the 1/4. With track days and standing mile runs.

I don't think the 28 inches will matter much with a sub 3,000 pound car

MeanTA, the flow numbers are accurate. If you want, I can get them put back on a flow bench for you for $40.

I think they will fit the bill of what you are looking to do. Although on my setup the power band would fall off about 6,000 RPM, they still were making good power beyond 6,000 RPM. When I would race the car, I always would bring it up to 6500 RPM to shift (7,000 RPM in 4th gear at the track). I also made plenty of top end pulls with the car (well beyond the 1/4 mile point), and they still performed well.

Heres a top end pull during a race vs a buddies mustang *link fixed> http://www.streetfire.net/video/supercharged-fox-body-vs-supercharged-z28_148834.htm

CALL911 i totally trust you and Fastbird. No need to test them again. This is why i went with your heads..... The heads have proven themselves to make power under boost. And thats what i needed:D

P.S. There will be a HUGE chunk of money coming your way in a week;)

Just curious, who ported these after TPIS?

Fonce Performance.Huh, Fonse is about an hour from me.

Fonse didn't do any port work to these to my knowledge. AFAIK they are as CNC'd from TPIS.

Sean, the heads were CNC'd by TPIS, then Al Jr. had the heads further ported while he had my motor at Fonse performance.

I don't recall as this was a few years back. I just remember having them done and flow benched afterwards.
