Ok, first off tonight was the first startup for my car after engine rebuild and it didn't go well. Mods:52mmtb, kncai, FLP headers, 1.6rr, cc306, and i went to turbo 400 from six speed. When I adjusted valves I only did a 1/4 turn, didn't want to do a whole turn as the lifters had leaked back down since they were in the block for a month before I adjusted valves. Everything else is stock. So I turn the key and have to give it about half throttle to get it to fire, it wont run under 2200/2300 rpms, and filled my shop with smoke. It had a strong gas smell so its rich. I know its gonna smoke till the rings seat and burn the oil off in the cylinders but damn it was thick. I have a pic and a video on ltx tech facebook page. Thanks for all and any help. Also if there is anybody in the Nashville area and can help with this issue inbox me or hit me up here. I'm boggled.

Opti.
Nah, what intake gaskets did you use? We had the same thing happen after freshening up the engine in my sig and it was due to junk intake gaskets allowing oil mist from the lifter valley to draw into the intake ports.
Also, did you reflash the tune?

untuned and the intake gaskets are stock style. i did have to tighten a few intake bolts, didnt think about that. I need to go over those again. and dont say opti, lol, its brand new!!!!! if you jinx me, karma will come and bite your opti in the ass too!!!! lol

It already has.
Depending on what size can your old tune was for that could be the reason for the smoke. If the cylinders are washing out the rings won't seat.
When you say stock style do you mean the felpro graphite coated style or the hard composite style? The hard composite ones didn't seal for me.

thats why i stopped, was afraid of washing out the cylinders. AINT NOBODY GOT TIME FOR DAT!!! honestly dont remember, i think it was the hard ones, i just remember them looking like the ones on the car before.

Mine did that. Running too rich will explain the smoke and can also play a part in not running under 2k. You said 52mm tb. Is it aftermarket? You may need a hole in it to allow a lower idle, that or adjust your blades to be open a bit more and then adjust your tps back to spec with the new blade position. Just curious since I haven't seen the pic, is the smoke white, blueish white, or grey? It would help diagnose exactly what's causing the smoke.
Did you change injectors or anything in the fuel system to cause it to run rich?

I'd be seriously careful with running the car if it's running extremely rich. I bought an LT1, rebuilt everything but the short block (heads redone with new hardware, new cam, lifters, etc) and I put 30# injectors on the car without having the tune in the PCM recalibrated for the bigger injectors. I ran it for about 15 minutes and it washed the cylinders so badly that after driving it around for about 80 miles to "break it in" it spun two bearings so badly that I had to have the block bored out .040 over. When I drained the oil I had about 3qts of fuel in the oil.
It really could be a number of things without more troubleshooting and diagnostics. A bad coolant temp sensor will also cause it to run extremely rich. What year is your car too? Is it 95+? If so, there's always the possibility that the optispark was indexed wrong when it was installed...

I reread what I posted and I should clarify - I ran it 15 minutes without the calibration. I then had the tune calibrated for the fuel injectors and a basic tune put in so it'd run OK, then drove it the 80 miles with the correct injector size in the PCM. So it was those 15 minutes that really washed the cylinders and started the downward spiral into spinning the two bearings. The point I am trying to make is it doesn't take much on a fresh rebuild to eff it up royally.

The car never ran longer than 10 seconds because it would stumble and die because of it being rich. I have to hold the throttle open like a carbureted vehicle with no choke and keep it above 2000rpms to run. I didn't put bigger injectors in, no adjustable fpr, the throttle body is a used bbk 52mm. I double checked the injectors this moring and they are in the correct spot, and put a plug over the pipe on the top right of the throttle body, which didn't make a difference. I'm gonna put the rest of the exhaust on today, put the stock maf (the one on it is a stock descreened that came with a kn cai i bought, and stock throttle body back on, check my plug wires and tps. I should have a reading of .65, .67 closed, right? The coolant temp sensor is newer, I replaced it with the water pump when I first got the car last year, but that's a cheap part to test.
Popo, can you take the pic and video I posted on Facebook and put them here? If so I would greatly appreciate it.
Also for those that haven't, like ltxtech on facebook and you can see the pic and video there. (I'm throwing you a plug there popo) Haha

Is your MAF sensor installed and hooked up? I'll bet that's it.

Crossed spark plug wires? That will cause it not to idle and puff smoke. Be suprised how often this happens..

Yes the maf is plugged up and has the full air intake system on it. And I plan on checking the wires because I did have them off rerouting away from the headers.

Mystery bird, you were correct sir, MAF fixed it. Installed the mid pipes and y pipe and changed the maf, she fired up perfectly!!!
