View Full Version : Shift Light Installed In Cluster

I didn't like my options for mounting the shift light so I talked to a guy my dad works with and he soldered lead wires from my Raptor shift light so I could do a super simple and clean shift light install. The "Dip Switch" will be mounted in the glove box for simple light adjustments (the MSD 6al-2 will be in there too). Then I don't have to worry about popping out the vents to make adjustments.

Anyway enough rambling here's some pics :)

I'm really happy how it turned out and it is BRIGHT, a lot brighter than the pics make out. I'm a little worried about the green LEDs, but I got a damn good deal on the shift light so I will try it out for a while. I drilled the holes in the bezel and drilled a large hole in the actual cluster. The LEDs fit tight into the bezel, but I used some black RTV to help hold it in and block the lights in the dash from lighting up the shift light at night.

that is an interesting location for the light. I am still trying to figure out where I am going to put mine. I am temporarily going to have it attached to the A-pillar until I can figure out a permanent place.

I really like where I ended up installing the light, getting the wires extended was the only problem, but the guy my dad knows is pretty cool and loves doing stuff like that. He soldered up a nitrous valve that was damaged during shipping for a buddy of mine and thought it was one of the coolest things he has seen. I guess when your buried in computers repairing them seeing something a little different is a good change of pace.

I'm pretty sure that 93-96 clusters are very similar and in 97 they changed it and kept the same style until 02 correct? I have the white overlays so maybe thats what is throwing you off.

I'll get some pics tonight after work, I don't have time to snap some right now and load them up. I drilled a big hole (1 1/8") in the cluster itself lol my step bit bottomed out before the hole was large enough for the LED cluster to fit through it so I just grabbed a small hole saw :) It just cut through the clear plastic that directs light to the gauge face, hopefully it still lights up the front. But just in case I'm going to order some brighter LEDs for the cluster itself

That looks real good. I like the clean look of that so much better than on the a pillar .

Well I have the 97 cluster lol and yes 97-02 are the same And I'm also wondering if the light will bounce off the clear lens

I just bench tested it in my garage with the lights off and it isn't as bad as you would think. I figured the whole lense would light up, but it really doesn't.

Tomorrow I'm going to start putting the interior back into my car, so I will get some completed pics by the weekend.....hopefully lol

I went out and took some, but you can't see where the hole was drilled, just where the wires come up through. I could take the cluster apart, but I don't really don't want to again.

That is pretty sharp and a great idea! ... You could always throw some NightShade on the lights if they were too obnoxious. This would also make them pretty unnoticeable if not lit. Just a thought.

Already thought about that lol, I'm just going to rock it and see how it is before I darken it up.

Thanks

Nice job, looks clean! Just something to consider with putting the MSD box in your glove compartment. They get pretty hot and there's no airflow in there. Some people have had issues with them failing, heat kills electronics. On the same note I'm sure there are several people using them there without any issues, I know I've seen them in there on other cars.

I'm planning on adding a small computer fan and drilling a bunch of holes in the glove box for aided cooling. My brother has run a MSD 6AL box in the gutted glove box of his S10 for years without any problems. Thanks for the heads up though, I appreciate that

my 6al is in my glove box... has been since 2005 ish.

we made an aluminum base and spaced it 1/2" off of the base so air can travel around it. And on queationable...or warm days... i just ride with the gb open.

Here's some pics of a Harlan Shift Light installed in a newer cluster, these were sent to me from a guy on ls1tech. He installed it a bit different, but it gives a better idea of what to expect if you want to try this
