View Full Version : Opti or Crank Sensor?

So as some of you know, I went with the LTCC kit for my vehicle. I had problems with the ignition in 2011. The car would run fine for a while and then start to stall, buck and backfire. The two times this happened I barely got home. The next day, the car was fine for about 10 minutes. This was onte stock ignition.
Fast forward to today. I am now running the LTCC kit. No single coil, no ICM and no spark coming from the opti. Does this sound like one or the other. Also, do I have to remove the timing cover to replace the crank position sensor?

Crank sensor is very easy to replace. You could even get one from someone doing a 24X conversion and getting the 96-97 crank sensor very cheap. Start there first. But if that don't cure your problem replacing the opti is probably next on the list.

The LTCC uses the cam position sensor in the Opti. No crank sensor on a 94. Or is there something done to the car that is not in the signature?

Well the car is a 94 but it has a 97 drivetrain in it now. I replaced the opti this morning with a new one that my friend had laying around and now the car wont start at all. It just cranks and occasionally you can hear it try to start. It stsrted and idled great initially. But once it started acting up I decided to tear into it and replace the opti. This is getting very frustrating.

Even so, the crank sensor is only for misfire detection.... doesn't prevent the engine from running.

Hmmm, well that just saved my $50. I was going to replace it tomorrow to see if it did anything.
Sooooo.... Now it sort of sounds like my opti was the problem and the new opti we installed was a bad opti.

What wires are you using with the LTCC? If I recall correctly, it may have problems with the MSD 8.5mm SuperConductors, and other very low resistance wires.

I am just running the blue summit 8mm wires that are like $42. I cut them and crimped them to fit the coil conversion using the taylor ls boot kit.
The car started up and ran just fine with the original opti, but it started acting up again like it did a year and a half ago, so I figured it HAD to be the opti. Since installing this new opti, I can't even get the car to start. It just cranks and you can occasionally hear it sputter like it was thinking about starting.
