thought i had a project log here, but i guess not. seems only fitting as this was the first forum i joined after i got the car. well this is the car's story, hopefully it's a good one and the bumps in the road aren't too big and can be spaced far apart lol, wishful thinking. first few posts are from the last 6 months so it may seem a bit condensed.
I traded my '00 grand prix GTP for a '94 firebird formula w/ a t56 last fall and am loving it so far. the car was set up for auto-xing and i will be slowley turning it into my own. The car is mostly stock power wise other than an exhaust, Hooker super comp headers, and MSD ignition. Handling wise it's got a few more things done, Complete Sam Stranos suspension. Springs, sway bars, urathane, bilstien shocks. it's got a rather haggard 4 point roll bar. i'm slowly grabbing parts for it as i find stuff. no huge plans for the car this year other than to learn to drive it better and have some fun. the plan is to leave the LT1 in until it blows up or next winter, what ever comes first. at that time i'd like to do a 6.0 swap with H/C/I. this is my first F-body so it will be a learning experience for me!

yes it is, i don't regret it at all. expensive but well worth it.
that is the plan, i've only had the car since september and already got it stranded once due to a wet opti and it just about happened again today. having a car that leaves me stranded if i happen to get stuck in the rain is kinda a downer. i plan to put a 100 shot on the LT and rock it this summer, hopefully that will wake her up. i'd love to see low 13s so it's not toooo hard to keep up with other cars.

when i got the car it had a sparco chrono road seat in it. i never had a stock seat but i'm sure the sparco was an upgrade. for me, this is a race car. i use it just to have fun. i don't car about comfort or luxuries, i just want to go fast or be quick through corners. for me the sole reason for going to the kirkey was weight. it's a 12lb seat with the cover on it and that's about 1/3 what the stock seat was from what i read. any extra fat that can be trimmed will be. when/if i swap it i'd like to go with tubular stuff in the front end. this being my first RWD car, i want to lift tires (long term goal lol)

Thanks, Boss!
it's 3M vinyl. i ordered a 5'x7' piece from a friend and he and i just attacked it this AM. all one piece. you lay it across the hood and stretch it to fit the curves and bends. it's a long process but it was fun and i like how it came out. being both of our first times trying it it's not perfect but i'm very happy. in a couple months when it's a little hotter out i'm going to order some matte dark grey and we are going to attempt to wrap the whole car. something like this color scheme

Makes sense now. I thought it was a daily driver. When I started reducing weight in my DD I put summit racing buckets in and even with padding they were rough lol so I swapped em for stock camaro seats. Same style but more comfortable. Weight savings makes it clear to me though. Definitely gonna be watching this thread.

Sold my Torque Thrusts and then bought a set of C5 motorsports wheels. I hate polished lips on wheels so I plastidipped the lips black and left the faces gloss black. They currently have shaved Toyo Proxes RA1s on them so that should make the next couple auto-x a bit more fun.
Sorry for phone pics, better ones at the auto-x next weekend.

Car has now left me stranded twice, I'm done dealing with this motor. Time to yank it and find a LQ.
it started fine this AM, drove to the store and then to the auto-x I was supposed to do today. Ran fine, smooth as it ever has. Got there and had to move the car and it would crank but not start. It's got spark, but it seems weak. Fuel pump is priming, but its getting no injector pulse. has headers and a G2 intake. 98k miles on it, ran fine before today as long as it wasn't raining lol. make me an offer!
No rain which is what left me on the side of the highway last time.

after talking with some friends i think i'm going to pull the LT1 and sell it, a friend will sell me a carbed 355 for $500 and i can throw that in so i at least have something fun to drive all summer and save till winter and do the 5.3 or 6.0 swap. i feel like at this point even fixing it is just going to prolong the pain and i'll just end up getting towed again.

The problem with the Opti is the high voltage section. Take the high voltage out of the Opti, and you have a killer cam position sensor. Add the Bailey Engineering LTCC and your Opti high voltage problems are gone. And you have a nice direct fire ignition using 8 LSx coils.

05-12-2013, 10:37 AM
Sucks to hear but I think all of us understand how frustrating these cars can be. People like me are just to stubborn to throw money in another direction!
Injuneer just beat me to it, I was gonna suggest switching to another ignition that may be more friendly to your plans with the car.
Formula218
05-12-2013, 11:17 AM
I thought about doing that, but it seems like rather than swap to LS coils I can spend not much more and buy the whole LQ.

05-12-2013, 11:28 AM
That's going to involve a PCM/wiring change (which can be picked up with a complete engine), motor mount and bell housing conversion, and I'm not sure if the LS PCM can controll the LT style cluster. Don't get me wrong it can and has been done and I'm sure you already know it's more than just a Saturday swap!:shiner:

I might just have a custom harness made because I only need the running motor, I don't need or want any of the wiring for the dash stuff (other than gauges), I just need the motor to run really.
I would really like to get a tubular k-member when I do the swap to save some weight, but that's $$ so we'll see. Yeah I know it's not just a quick swap, but in the long run its worth it to me to deal with one big headache now rather than many as it keeps leaving me stranded.

looks like my fuel pump crapped out. tried starting it and the pump isn't priming. i don't know if this caused the no start or just happens to be happening at the same time. i planned to upgrade it anyway before i sprayed it and the 355 will have a mechanical pump so i guess that's not too big of a deal.

Unless he's having a custom bellhousing made, it's more than just a bellhousing conversion. LS transmission input shafts are longer than LT/SBC input shafts. At a minimum it would require a new input shaft and front cover. LS t56's are hydraulic throwout bearing as well (vs our pull fork style), so you're looking at a new slave and clutch set.
Formula218
05-14-2013, 07:38 PM
i knew the input shafts where different, i haven't heard about the throwout bearing thing though ill look into that. i'll more than likely just sell my lt1 t56 and buy a ls1 trans. i don't care too much weather it's 6sp or auto. i like driving a manual but autos are nice when cruising and are consistent when racing.

But if it doesn't work then I'm out $100 and still no fun car :( It's a good chance for someone who knows these motors to pick up a cheap spare motor. It ran fine before it quit starting so I know the motor itself is fine. All the accessories and the headers will go on the 355 so it shouldn't be too big of a hassle to do the swap, I hope lol. If I can get a few hundred out of the LT then the swap won't cost me much if anything.

its also the chance to sell a "running" motor , which at this point its not. Now...its an "Engine That Stopped Running For Unknown Reason."

Yeah I'm mopping up what your spilling. I just don't want to drop the money to try and fix it and then it either still not work or me not sell it for much and end up losing money. We have to pull the fuel pump out of the tank to do the 355 anyway so ill toss a pump in then and see if it fires up. If not i guess the pump will sit till I go EFI again. If it works then ill sell the motor as running.
I'm not trying to get top dollar for the motor, I'd rather see someone put it to good use than end up at the scrap yard.
Formula218
05-15-2013, 09:30 AM
Anyone have a good stock fuel pump laying around they'd sell? New ones are $172 at Vatozone and for that price ill just scrap the motor.
Or know the part number for a walbro that will work to check the LT and still work down the road when I have another EFI motor?

i don't know if we did. i know we where getting weak spark and no injector pulse when we poked in the injector plug with a test light. that's why i was leaning towards it being the opti rather than the pump. i should go crank it over and pull a plug and see if it smells like fuel.

There is a fuel pump prime connector on the passenger side near the ecm. I believe its a grey wire with a connector on the end of it. Apply 12 volts to it and the pump should turn on.

so i'm wondering if the truck intake manifold would fit in my car if i cut the cowl. i already have the wipers out and a cowl hood, so both of those are not issues, and i've been reading that the truck manifolds flow better than any LS intakes. anyone know if it's just not possible at all or if i could if i shaved the top of the intake (remove the mounts for the cover and anything else that sticks up higher than needed) and cut the cowl to fit.

I've never tried to stuff a truck intake into one, but they are tall even w/o the mounts for the covers. I would be tight with modification...

Think the issue would be how tall it is in the back, ohh well worth the thought, I'll keep looking for a cheap LS setup.

Yea, that's totally going to be the issue, up front with the clearance of your hood would be a breeze.

we will see. with the i put one of the hoosiers on the front drivers side and the only thing i saw that it hit is the front sway bar. i didn't have time to do the same on the pass side but hopefully they are the same. that was with a 10mm spacer in the front. i'm hoping the Nittos are a tad narrower than the Hoosiers are and that will fix the problem.
the car they came off was a 98-02 camaro and he said they didn't rub at all. he has the hochkis sway bar and i have the strano bar.

the car made it from Lansing to WW and back without any issues at all. tires only rubbed once when i hit a big dip in the highway.
other than that it ran flawlessly! saw a few other LT guys out there but never stopped where any were :(
i really want to throw my nitrous kit on it. what do you think a stock motor with exhaust, intake, and a 100 wet shot would be good for in a sub-3000lb car?

I think it could be functional if it was secured to more than just the bumper cover, but I'd say its 95% for looks.
Ghettogmc23
02-11-2014, 07:44 PM
Most splitters are functional 30+ mph or so iirc so yours should be whether you want it to or not lol.
Mount adjustable splitter rods from the bumper to the edge and just keep it level to the ground to keep it functional in a good way. Front angled up = lift. front angled down = drag.
Aerodynamic mods are only cosmetic on show cars :)
JAG- Project FrostFire
Formula218
02-11-2014, 09:09 PM
i get what you saying and i understand the aerodynamics, but i think any downforce created by the splitter with just cause the bumper cover to sag. the general rule of thumb is if the splitter deflects with the weight of you standing on it, it's just going to deflect when it starts to create any major downforce.

as i expected my bumper hasn't fared well after being a cone chaser most it's life, 4 of the 8 (3 on drivers side and 1 on the pass)lower tabs are broken off the bumper. i had to just hold the tab with vice grips and use an impact to get the bolts out. i'm not quite sure i'm i'm going to make it work to hold it back on now. i'm thinking a washer above the bumper to sandwich it together. not what i was really hoping for, but pretty much what i expected.

It's a LS k member with solid mounts. It was bought for the swap. i told MWC "i'm putting a 5.3 into a '94 firebird and want to order a tubular k and solid mounts"
the intention from day one was to swap the car, every part bought was with that in mind.

Get it in, and work out the bugs with the swap. spray it for now , then It'll just get bolt ons over time. Then get a 6.0 to have ready when the 5.3 let's go.

sounds good, Gil. thanks for the update! any teaser pics of the shape of the formy splitter!?!?!
hey how hard was it to install your seats?
not hard at all, i used Racecraft brackets (http://www.racecraft.com/index.php?main_page=product_info&cPath=668&products_id=251) and just modified them to work with my seat (they are made for a different model kirkey than mine). the only difference was the seat width so i just had to grind down the brackets to fit in their new locations. then just welded them in. i will warn though that the seat is about 2" off the floor and your legs will sit damn near flat on the ground lol. i'm 6'0" and any shorter and i'd probably have to slide the seat up.

UPDATE!!!!
ok guys
Mark and I had a meeting with our waterjet guy and it looks like we will need a v6/lt1 car with the bumper installed to get the correctly design the mounting hole bcz w/o the bumoer being on the car, the bumper flexed and the design and mounting holes may have flaws. So i bought this bumper and plastic for nothing. sorry guys :(
if you guys know anyone on near the Sun VAlley area with a v6/lt1 formula that would let us borrow their car for a good 30-60 minutes, we would greatly appreciated. They would a splitter way below cost for their time i will also be posting in the regional section

hahaha i freaking LOVE that chair (sitting in it right now lol) when found out i was for sure getting my house the first thing i did was go get a kings thrown! i've had it for almost two years and i really want to get another one that's more 'overstuffed', i like the maverick, and i want leather so it'll withstand stains better. nothing better than a day of standing all day at work or auto-Xing all day in a kirkey than kicking my feet up and passing out in my chair.

For sure Maverick LG leather is top notch. Real supple 100% top grain leather. And the chair just fits. The seat contours to the body really well. It reminds me of a bucket seat its almost race inspired. Lol super comfortable and "overstuffed". If I were you I would look at the Greyson leather recliner. Comes in power recline with independently controlled legrest and reclining feature. It also comes in power XR which has the additional adjustable lumbar and headrest support. Maverick also has these features. But the Greyson has a slightly taller back and for me a more modern look that is Aesthetically appealing.

Had to get 18" wheels to run the brembos, I ground down one to fit a 17 and it was pretty sketchy looking. Soooo I traded my ZR1s that I loved for some C6 DD 18s. They need wider tires but it'll do. They were chrome, and that wasn't happening, so plastidip happened. Black with a layer of glossafier.

Also tried plastidipping my mirrors red, not a bad match! They need some glossafier, but will be anthracite when the car gets sprayed so they're fine matte.

makes it easier, alot of calipers and their respective bracket bolts right to those two holes. certain kits either spindle you cut the ears/tangs off and use a adapter plate that uses the 4 wheel bearing bolts to hold it on. thats the way my baer brakes are.

We didn't use the pro-kit. I ordered two gallons of dip, then I bought two gallons of Kleen Strip xylene thinner from Home Depot. We mixed it 1:1 and sprayed from a siphon feed paint gun with big tip (2.2 I think) it laid down much smoother than a lot of dip jobs I've seen.

Ok cool. Back when I did vinyl apl.. everything was wet application. I was reading this...it looks like its DRY application. Is that how u did it?
Yup goes on dry. The sticky side of the vinyl isn't smooth, it's got a ton of tiny little pyramids so when you lay the vinyl down only the tips are touching the car. This allows you to lift and set it back down over and over again without it losing bond. Once your happy you use that spreader to go over the vinyl and that flattens all the tiny pyramids and gives you the final bond. It is also perforated so that air bubbles can escape through the vinyl so your not stuck with little bubbles all over. I watch hours of videos on YouTube to get some tips before I started. This stuff is really nice to work with. Use a heat gun on all bends too, it becomes very flexible, almost like cloth, when it's heated up.
