View Full Version : DISGUST WITH OUR ANTI MILITARY ADMIN here at my PD.

So, about a month ago, I learned that my partner at work, and friend was being deployed for the third time. Not only is he my friend, but he is also going to be the BEST MAN in my wedding (hopefully, if he survives).

Sorry, morbid humor..... anyways, He has been with the PD for 8 years, and I was his training Officer... he has honestly been gone as much as he has been here... Between his previous two deployments and a shoulder injury on his last deployment, he has literally been on the road, as much as he has been NOT HERE...

Anyways, he is given a hard time by the higher ups, and one supervisor says, "his military is an inconvenience, and its time for him to pick, whether he wants to play Army or be a Police Officer." I don't even bother arguing anymore, I just bite my lip...but I think it is ignorant to even say when someone chooses to not only be involved in one life style that is all about GIVING, but also incorporates a second lifestyle that is about GIVING...

Our "Boss" is all kinds of annoyed that he is being deployed and creating a short staff situation with the PD, so he has been abusing the hell out of him on the schedule like a final "FU." Its disgusting.

People think he is raking in the money because he is an E7 or E8 in the Army and also as a full time Police Officer...I know what he gets...and he is not getting paid nearly what its worth to be deployed. So like we did during his last deployment, we took a vote, for the Township to supplement his military income while he is deployed so that he will continue to make what he is making. Last time...the majority of people voted to only supplement him 50%.... WHY...its not like it hurts us in any way, and his bills don't (all) stop while he is deployed fighting for all fo us. The twp still saves money since we are only supplementing his income which has already been budgeted for....and we are not paying his medical benefits.

This years vote was better...out of the 8 of us...only 2 voted to not give him ANYTHING (which disgusts me) and the rest voted to fully suppliment his income. I cant believe that people are so "small" that they would rather see someone be deployed then return home to struggle rather than take care of that person while that person fights for US!

EITHER WAY...ALL THAT WAS THE LEAD IN TO THIS..... I contacted the local paper, and told them the story... described as much as I could and they want to do a feature. I was so excited, I wrote down the info, and told my partner I had a surprise for him when he came into work (last week). I handed him a piece of paper with the reporters name...phone number and email on it.... My partner looked at it confused as I explained what I had done, and how I thought it was time that he got a PAT ON THE BACK.....

Well he called...he filled them in... and the story is ready to run. I just got a call from the reporter and he believes they will print it 2moro. So, I hope to add a link to the story.

I guess I was just excited to share, and privatley say Fuck You to all those that shit on our service people as they sit in an office and do nothing.

Sounds like your "upper boss" who is shitting on this guys is one of those cops who deserves a big "FUCK YOU" Of all people HE should be giving your partner a pat on the back for going above and beyond going over seas and coming home to work for the PD.

Dont get me wrong , I respect the cops who deserve the respect, but your C.O sounds like a douche bag. All my family inlaw are cops or retired NJPD / NYPD. NY/NJ Port authority. etc.. Quite a few friends are military too. best wishes to your friend. Good Bless him and bring him back home safe again.

If you know how long he is getting deployed and get a address,, I'll send a care package. , etc.. I do it with all my other buddies and they love it.

Hearing this really pisses me off and if I could get away with it I would not turn down a chance to break your boss's nose and anybody else who is anti military, these people are examples of the finest of our society and as far as inconvenienced goes thats just plain bullshit.
I cant wait to see what the paper prints up about this and tell your friend he's allright in my book and we here wish him luck while he is gone and will be happy when he comes back home.

I'm a military brat (dads retired now). Live about 10 miles from Ft. Campbell Ky. But I always hate seeing ppl bash our military when I was growing up & my dad was gone. As far as I'm concerend, if u can't stand behind our troops, u can stand in front of them. (Sorry if that's not proper forum material). My neighbor is about to go at the end of this month.

He's a great person... and he would do anything for anyone who is a "friend" to him.

There was a building fire local so the reporter sent me a message and advised HUMMER's story wont print till Weds....

We took a pic to go along with the military pics we submitted...

I hope he gets everything he deserves and more, any man willing to risk his life both in and out of country for the good of others is a true hero. If you are reading this, Mr. Hummer, thank you for everything you do.

Larry, is this "boss" who's giving him shit also the same boss in your other ordeal? If so, I can't wait to see karma swing back around and take him for a ride...

a few things: If the pic of him in uniform (ACU) is recent, he's an E6 SSG.

2nd, I did 21 yrs and retired not long ago. 12 of it in a very high deployment unit (not to be named). I married my wife in 1993, the first 4 years together we spent a total of 126 days together. In 1995 my son was born. I was home for 3 days prior to his birth and 6 days after. I didn't see him for another 7 months. Fwd to 2000 my daughter was born, I missed her birth and the next 6 months. My son is 18 now and daughter 12. Out of the 15 yrs of my time in the Army with my son, I only spent 6 Christmas' with him and 3 with my daughter and very few birthdays with either. So the idea of being gone alot is the norm. But there is no reason why the bosses should say he has a choice. He does what the Military tells him to do and the local yokals can't say a damn thing about it. His Dept should be happy they have someone like him. I'm betting the dickheads are just jealous.

As for the boss/dept heads, The paper/media is good, but contact the local VFW, American Legions, etc. If want to see heads roll, those are the guys that'll do it.

Great job Popo, at least you had the courage to open it up to the public. Now if the Dept. decides to not take care of him they have to answer tot he media. Thank him for his service, from another officer and son of a 25 year USAF vetran. Let him know WE as a society have his back and will watch over his family while he is gone.

if he is guard or reserve have him contact his ESGR rep. That rep will lock the uppers up with exactly what the law is regarding that. also tell his commanders in the unit and they can point him in the proper path.

I would think it would be enough for them to start snooping around and as you know that makes guilty people nervous as hell and thats usually when they screwup and you catch them, just the idea that there may be shit like this taking place should make them want to look around and talk to people.
Think about this headline "Local Police department unfriendly to active duty deployed Military service member"
Guarantee this would be all bad for those responsible and if that happens there is no way he wont get the full ride he deserves while hes is gone keeping the whole damed country safe and a big enough shitstorm and there could even be a new Chief.
The problem with being the person in charge of anything is that they are the first head on the chopping block when people want blood and the first head in this situation would be your boss.
Not such a bad thought huh? LOL.

UPPER POTTSGROVE — Finding out your friend is deploying to a foreign theater of war typically isn’t the best of news.
But for those who know Upper Pottsgrove Police Officer James Hummer, his tours of duty usually have something of a happy side effect.
“Whenever I get deployed, it’s a tell-tale sign that my friends are getting married,” Hummer said.
Over the course of his two previous deployments to Iraq as a member of the Army Reserve’s communications arm, Hummer said he’s missed “six or seven weddings.”
In his third deployment, beginning later this month in Afghanistan, Hummer won’t miss his friend and fellow Upper Pottsgrove officer Larry Hanna’s wedding, for which he’s been tapped to be best man.
“We postponed our wedding a year because he’s going away,” Hanna said.

“Luckily they hadn’t really settled on a date so they were able to move it,” Hummer said.
Hanna said he’s known Hummer for about eight years, when he became Hummer’s training officer.
“He’s the nicest guy. He’s the guy everybody loves,” Hanna said. “He’s loud, he’s boisterous, he’s the life of the party.”
Hummer said he’s grateful for the support many of his fellow officers have shown him.
“One of the guys, he was in the Navy, he can relate to the lifestyle,” Hummer said.
With Hummer leaving for Afghanistan and some officers in the department injured, shift scheduling will be a bit of a challenge. Because of that, Hummer appreciates the flexibility others have shown in his absences in the past.
“It’s limiting as to when guys can take off,” Hummer said. “When I came back, I volunteered and told them to put me wherever you can in the schedule.”
Hummer’s previous tours were from 2005 to 2007 and 2009 to 2011. He established communications in various areas during that time and expects to probably do the same as a project manager in his next tour.

“(The area) goes from not having any communications to connecting to satellites,” Hummer said.
While deployed, Hummer said his friendship with Hanna helped.
“We stayed in real good communication,” Hummer said. “He was just asking what was going on in my life...I think he might have called my parents a few times to see if they needed anything. He’s always been real good to me.”
During his last deployment, Hummer re-injured a shoulder in combat training that he’d already hurt in a house fire on duty in Upper Pottsgrove. After recovering from that injury and returning to duty in Upper Pottsgrove, he figured he’d have a year of “stabilization.”
Instead, he was informed by his battalion commander he’d be redeployed last fall.
“I told him I have a year of stabilization and he said, ‘Yeah, we’ll see about that,’” Hummer said.
Deployments usually last about 400 days, but that’s “not hard and fast.”

“Every time he goes, we always joke, ‘If you come back,’” Hummer said. “It’s like that ‘Break a leg’ theory. It’s our morbid cop thing. It’s definitely not the same without him.”

I did read this and even told Mrs. Mad (Jeneen) about it and her response was "Wow thats not right, he was out trying to help people and got hurt so why arent they getting behind him and do whats right?"
I hate to see wrongs going unpunished like this especially in the Police department where Police are held to a higher standard than the rest of us because Police are supposed to be the Good Guys and it still shocks me to see this kind of thing going on.

Yes Karma has a big hand to play yet in this whole thing, speaking as a boss my statement would have been " Larry what do you need to get back to work?" and "what can we do to get you back out there?" and for sure "What can we do for Officer Hummer to take care of him while he is gone?"
I know that you need to keep good employees and even a little will go a long way so treating you and your friend like crap is just a dumb move period because good employees dont grow on trees.
People respond to you dont they? They know you and are used to seeing you right? Hey theres Officer Hanna hes cool and will help me right?
The same thing goes for Officer Hummer so if things get out about him being deployed and NOT being treated right then just watch and see what happens.
Just my 2 cents worth.
I am out so goodnight, please pass on best wishes to your friend and tell him that there are others who appreciate his sacrifice and also say"Thank you, because of you I sleep better at night"

Someone at these meetings needs to grill the people who are against paying this man. If he's got it so great and there's nothing to lose, why don't they enlist themselves? Everyone likes easy money. Right?

I'd love to see some of the answers as well as the looks on their faces when asked haha. 8/10 is pretty good, but its a shame to not be able to assume that its 10/10.

Imagine having to work TWO thankless jobs. Anyone who can do that is surely going to earn my respect.

Cool. I am glad to see it. There was nothing better than getting mail from home when you are deployed. There was little I appreciated more than getting support from back home. I'll bet your buddy feels the same.

...Now if we could get the "other" people at your work to support him, then we'd really be helping out.

Not 2 long ago, I used my PD's Facebook page to inform people that I was collecting things for my partner for a car package... well let me tell you... I got kids drawing and writing cards, cookies, jerky, silverware, Tupperware...soooooo much stuff.

It was an awesome feeling and I know the powers that be at work hate it when Im not there and people stop by to drop stuff off for "Officer Hummer who is deployed."

Just wanted to share. First of 4 boxes, going out by friday!!!!

Idk if i ever updated this either... But 6 of 8 officers voted to (when asked by the twp) to suppliment Ofc Hummer's military income 100% . The twp who asked us to vote then over rode us amd offered to only suppliment it 50%

Not much that can be done since they dont have to supl at all.... But just cause he is away does not mean he does not have the same bills...etc.... And its a savings for them since no med insurance needs to be paid..and the pay is not his FULL budgeted salary.

This is my partner (work, not gay) and Friend , JIM HUMMER
18027

18028

Now hold the phone! You're saying that your partner's name is Jim Hummer?

And that your boss has a problem with his service to this here country?

WTF!

Your boss is a police officer, right?

What color is the sky in the world he's living in… has he given any clues?

First: IF you AND your partner, weren't BOTH heavily armed, PLUS being as big as a Condo… I'd take this opportunity to point out that "Jim Hummer" is perhaps the "world's best" Gay-porn name, ever. I met a guy once whose name was "Buck Cash"… He was about 5' nothing, 100 and nothin'… soak and wet… He seemed to take MAJOR offense when I pointed out that HE had the best "Porn Name" I'd ever seen on a driver's license… (Yes I asked to see it…) So I hope you guys don't take it the same way. I'm substantially less capable of defending it today than I was then and Jim Hummer's Boot is bigger than all of Buck Cash.

So, given that I'm an old man now, I won't go there.

But if I were going to go there, I'd say THAT would be the #1 thing upon which a Police Administrator would dog someone… and THAT would be offset by his service to his country.

But everything is so bass-ackwards and upside down now days, it's hard for me to even get a handle on the goin's-on in this twisted ass world we're livin' in.

I salute you Popo!

Well done sir… even as I was reading this, I was thinking, 'someone needs to call a reporter…' brace yourself for impact.

I've two sons in the Reserves and I'm no fan of this President or the way he's prosecuting the war we're still in, so it is no source of aggravation when I see good men, solid Americans being chastised because they're still in the Service, doing a job that would be hard enough IF THEIR BOSSES WERE DOUCHEBAGS!~

Well great news... my partner at work, is on his last month in Afghanistan... He is currently training his replacement.

To keep on track of this thread...NONE of the other Officers at our PD, stayed in touch with him.. or brought stuff for the MANY care packages I sent him. Hell even people from the community donated to care packages...but NOT the guys we work with.

Glad to hear he is finishing up his tour. And that is unbelievable and sickening that your PD did not participate in your care packages. Hell even a few words written on a post it note..... "disgust" doesn't even scratch the surface.

Oh... wait till u hear this one.

So my friend... the one in the military came back from his 3rd deployment.

Unfortunatley he tore his shoulder again while deployed. Well the military wont release him from "active duty" while he is not the same condition as he left.

Sooooo... he had surgury... physical therapy and it all took time.

Well his military doctor only medically released him aboit 2 weeks ago... but the military has not completed his "out processing" from active duty yet, meaning he still cant comit to comming back to the PD.

BEFORE I TELL U WHAT THE TWP DID TO HIM... let me see what u guys think they did.

Keep in mind there is federal law that states a job must hold a military deployed or active duty person's position as long as they are deployed/active duty...

Also... keep in mind that he is highly decorated and devoted to serving his country in the military and has deployed 3 times... and suffered 2 injuries during those three deployments that required surgery...

Anddddd....

Guesses!

Is he in the national guard? IIRC there is an injury provision in that law, must be physically able to perform job. So they may citing his shoulder, if in fact they are not offering his job back. Pretty shitty, but he may have a claim to some disability money if that's how it goes down.

Its no problem at all man. We should ALL appreciate what these men and women do for us, whether they are our friends or not and whether we agree on the situation that they are put in. I guess i think of all i went thru there and Im still there and at this point I couldnt be happier. New chief... great environment... excellent morale... it all worked out. Im doing my best not to try to give my opinion one way or another to him. I want him to do what makes him happy...
