View Full Version : Which way to go for a good tune?
I would like to have a good tune on my car, but nobody in the U.S. that I know of tunes Speed Density cars on a dyno. The mail order tunes from the two major companies are causing my car to run too rich with fuel. PCMforless and Fastchip don't dyno tune anymore.
I wanted to do a 24x and that was going to cost about $2600 and I was fine with that, but I think I will have to get a 4L60-E trans to make it work and that cost of $2600 is not incorporated with buying a 4L60-E , swapping internals, and putting it in the Z. That’s just a lot of work for a tune too.
I’m now thinking about doing a 97 or something conversion, but I haven’t done any research on it to see what it consist of and how much it will cost me.
I called a Houston tuner, Chuck Tuning, and asked him if I bought all the software and hardware would he be able to tune my car and he said yes, but he has a shady reputation. So I don’t know if I should do that.
What I need to do is a datalog and sent it to the people that I bought a mail order tune so that they can tweak the tune, but I could never figure out how to save them and attach them to a e-mail a few years ago. That’s what I really need to do.
I would love to jump in my car and take it for a spin and not have my clothes end up smelling like gas. I also don’t want to ruin the engine sooner then normal.
Does anyone have some good advice.

Surprised you'd have a problem finding a tuner in TX, I would think they would be abundant. Up here in MI it seems like you can't throw a rock without hitting a few tuners.

I WISH! Maybe because I don't know the right people. I know I wont find a shop around here. I do wish I could find a person to tune it.

Hard part is finding a tuner that will do SD tuning on - let's face it - an older car. Seems like almost all the tuners now are OBD2 LSx tuners.

Thats why I like my car so much is because its old. It's 20 yrs old! I just hate that I cant find someone to tune it. If I could find someone capable to of tuning my car i would buy the software, hardware, and pay them to tune my baby.

Does anyone have a way to get a hold of moe. I have searched and can't find any info.

I "heard" that I wouldn't be able to use my 4L60 because in wasn't controled electrically. Is this not true?

I just PM him, but I would love a direct way to contact him. Also, I live in Clear Lake area and my brother lives in Crosby. We should check out each others LT1s one day.
It's good to see some LT1s from Texas too! Ray it looks like your doing it Texas style. BIG!

Honestly I'd convert to a 94+ PCM at the very least... being on a 93 PCM is your biggest albatross for tuning. Most people don't want to deal with having to flash the chips for the 93.

Thats a very good point that I didn't think about. Ray@NitroDaves.com (Ray@NitroDaves.com) would you know how to get in touch In touch with Moe? I did a little searching all night longand read that Moe does dyno tunes at DC Motorsports which is next to NitroDave’s.I’m assuming that you would have a connection to him. Would you be willing toPM me his information or how to get in touch with him? I wouldn’t mind travelingout there at all. I have a vacation at the end of the month anyway and will be planningto go to College Station anyway. Man, if I could get my car tuned and go outthere for fun it that would be AWESOME!

What would I need to do for this conversion? I haven’t done my homework on it and I like to know what all I would need to do and the roundabout cost?

Honestly I'm not 100% sure... You'd need a MAF (unless you just tune it out, which you can easily do with a 94+ PCM since you don't have to flash chips for each tune), the 94+ PCM, and maybe the 94+ wiring harness. I'm not sure what the wiring differences are between 93 and 94+ for the engine harness, so it might be as easy as just buying a PCM and having it flashed to run SD.

You will need the wiringharness and the PCM to convert, along with a MAF sensor. I just did this with my other bolt on Firebird. It's a 93 but converted it to a 94 setup. It plugs right in place under the hood and inside the car.

I will really consider this. First, I need to find out if anyone can tune a 94 around me.
LOL! Oh, and my optispark went out.http://www.ls1tech.com/forums/images/smilies2/icon_rolleyes.gif It went out the other day, because of the water pump leaking on it. Thats the first time it has gone out on me in the 8yrs I have owned the car.
I think I'm going to go the 24x route now that I know I can use my trans. The way I'm thinking is instead of putting money back into the opti and still being in the same predicament as I'm in now. Instead I will use the money to get rid of the weak link, opti, and be able to find someone to tune it here in Houston. If I don't go the 94 route.
