View Full Version : Anyone using a Dual Sync or Crank Trigger Distributor?

I am thinking about going with a dual sync distributor for my new 383 combo. I am torn between going with a crank trigger or dual sunc. I am leaning more towards a dual syncdue to ease of installation and setup as well as less complexity. I will be turning the new engine to 7500-7600 rpms and using a max of a 250 shot (accel pro ram single plane intake will be used). I will be running a FAST XFI setup.
If you have a dual sync or crank trigger, do you like it? Any issues? Which model do you have? If you had it to do over would you still go with a the way you went?
Thanks for any info/advice.

From what I'm told, a crank trigger is a more accurate way to get crank timing data to the FAST system... But a dual sync allows sequential injection by providing cam and crank position data.
I dont think I've ever seen a crank trigger distributor that would provide a cam sync.

msd crank trigger, with a 97 GM factory distributor for a 1500 series pickup truck. actually accel makes a replacement dist. and it is cheaper than the gm one, go figure! lol. you can run sequential as well this way. crank trigger spits out ck pos. and dist. gives you cam signal. done! tune and enjoy!
i run the xfi as well.

Thanks for the info. Do you have the part numbers that you used? Anything custom that needs to be done to make it work? FWIW, I am running an ATI balancer and a pulley for a GZ vacuum pump.
Thanks again,
Matt

how's the size of that dizzy compare to a SBC dual sync? We've got a dual sync in a Camaro so I'm looking at it and wondering if the GM one is bigger?

Hey Taner, What crank trigger kit are you running on your setup? What is the trigger wheel diameter? Lastly, do you have any pics of the crank trigger installed that you could post?
Thanks,
Matt

This is one I picked up off of ebay pt#8620 don't remember the diameter but it was a bbc one a sbc with the same diameter will work.

That's actually a pretty good alternative to the dual sync... Especially if you already have a crank trigger laying around.
Do you have a pinout for the connector on it?

Thanks for the pics and replies. I appreciate all the info. I ended up going with an MSD pro billet 8570 small cap standard distributor for a couple reasons. First, I am dynoing the engine with a carb on it and needed a distributor to work as a stand alone unit. Secondly, I was talking to Brian Macy at The Horsepower connection and he stated he can modify these distributors to work as a cam sync for sequential setup with the fast and a crank trigger. So for now I am going with the 8570 and after the car is dynoed I will send it out to be modified to work as a cam sensor. I will be getting a crank trigger setup and a Fast XFI setup at the same time when I am ready to put the car back together. Again, thanks for the help and advice.
PS--Is 34-35 degrees total timing about right for a 383? I was running this on my 355 and assumed this should be good for decent power.

34-35 degrees is a good starting point. Watch detonation and look at your plugs. If you are dynoing try to find the highest power level with the most timing without detonation. I have tuned some cars that like 31 degrees and some others that like 39 degrees. Mine likes 32.

I agree with Tony but I never even put more then 30 to mine this year. It was just less to pull out later. :)

mine actually likes 35 36 degrees. i guess that may have something to do with the cylinder head combustion chamber.

Ok I am now starting to bolt all of this stuff together and I am running into some questionable things. first, I have the GZ motorsports vaccum pump pulley that is ~4-5" long and ~2.5" in diameter. I am trying to install the crank trigger wheel on the ATI balancer (6.78" dia---7" crank wheel) but the instructions say I need to use the centering ring to install the crank trigger on the balancer but I cannot use the centering ring with the GZ mandrel. I see you are not using the supplied centering ring so what are you using to center the wheel on the balancer? Also, is anyone else running a vacuum pump on there crank trigger setup? If so, how is the mandrel installed with the crank trigger setup. I just want to make sure that I get this right while it is on the engine stand.
Thanks for any help,
Matt

By that pic, it looks like his drive mandrel is replacing the centering ring. The drive mandrel has to be centered as well, so if you match the mandrel O.D. to the crank trigger wheels I.D., you should be good to go for centering.

I had to turn an aluminum spacer to use the crank trigger on that balancer. Not seeing every thing you got ther you are most likely going to need something turned or made in a lathe to hold everything on center and at the right spacing.

I just got off the phone with the GZ vacuum pump guy. He said that I should be good to go as I am. The ATi balancer I have has a hub that sticks out a little from the balancer that the MSD crank trigger fits into perfectly. I cannot use a centering ring as the vacuum pump manderl is 2" dia then tapers at the end to 1.245" (same size as the crank. The opening for the crank trigger is 2.28" but ,as I said, the front of the balancer and the recessed part of the crank trigger mate together perfectly and it looks to be very centered. I will measure run out and see if there is any issues. Now I just need to make an aluminum block that is 2 3/16" with 2 bolt holes to mount to the block. Let me know what you guys think of the above posting. Thanks again for all your help and assistance thoughout my build. More questions will come.

my crank trigger is the larger one offered by msd, either way looks like you can make it work!
btw, what intake is that you have on top?
thanks

Taner if your talking about the intake in the quoted pictures. That is a brodix hvh with a 4500 flange.
