This problem started a few days ago. I shut off my car at the bank and Security light came on when I tried to start to my car. I pulled the battery fuse, put it back in no problem car started right up. Fast foward to Saturday, I am at the track running my car. I shut it off in the pit lanes, light comes on. I pull the fuse and put it back try to start my car light comes on again. I ran and got a wrench pulled the battery cable, put it back. Car started right up. Did not have a problem till last night. Last night I got to start my car, I turn the key nothing, go to turn it right again car cranks no problem. (Did that twice) Now its sitting out side fuse pull didnt help and just keeps going into Security.

Did you try cleaning the key if that doesnt help sounds like you need to bypass vats.

Sounds like u hit the nail on the head badbird. VATS ( vehicle anti theft ) can usually be bypassed by finding the right resistor to go between your security wire. Correct me if im wrong I believe its the purple and white going to your ignition switch. On GM vehicles does the security cut power to the fuel pump (ford does) or ignition.

I cleaned my key. Everytime I lick the key the car starts.

ewwww....

seriously, he is right thats the vats...

you can do the bypass

you can tune it out

you can go get another key if you do not have a 2nd key (if you do try that one)

Or you can keep licking your key, but eventually your luck will end.

When I was at the track thats what the tech told me to do...lol. It works.

So you think a new key would work, or should I just do this bypass thing.

I would just bypass it and get it over with

By pass is going to be cheaper and you should never have the problem again....

BUT.... you have to be a little mechanically inclined, IE, wiring and soldering.

Bypass is definetely the cheaper way. Cost me $5 to get the resistor made. But ive since just tuned it out.

You can get the resistor type needed by using a volt ohm meter on your key...then if it reads 3 or 7... you put the same value resistor in the line...

If I recall correctly that is...mine was a 4.11..but 4 wouldn't work, but 4.5 does...stupid...

I'll look up the bypass, and see if I can talk to POS95 (Pete) into some taco bell and see if we can tackle this project.

Just out of curiosity where do you tune it out in tuner cats for a 93 because I look but the security part is not changeable or I am not in the right place but I was going to do it since I have my own burned chip in it now but its running the factory tune.

I don't recall..I didn't tune mine out..I just took the value of the chip in the key and put resistors in the line...

Before you do this...I have had a key lose its programming before ...you might consider bringing it to Chevy and have them check the key.. happened on my 99 Monte....the key wasn't all that bad...less than 30 if I recall....but this was 4 years ago...wouldn't hurt to check...if Chevy still does that....

Im not sure on a 93 my car is a 94 and we used tunerpro.

You can get keys made at a locksmith for less then 20.00.They even have a little machine to give you the value of your key. If you are going to do the VATS bypass. It'll be a orange wire and white wire, or Purple wire and white wire, depending on year.

It might not be the key, It could be the reader in the switch.

Mike, I believe you are SOL on tuning VATS out on a 93. I just did the bypass.

My key is in rough shape. Still havent had a problem with the licking but I will try to find a Chevy dealership.

There's some good links.

Sometime last summer when I would get in my car to start it would for a couple seconds, then shut off. My key pellet was just worn down from use, it would flash the security light then cut the injectors power after a couple seconds of run time. Finally when I was about to go to work it just wouldn't stay running at all so I ran and grabbed a spare and I was off to work. Luckily I have like 4 spares so I just chucked the old key and using a new key now I haven't had problems.

Damn I knew having a 93 was going to challenge me but I hoped that the later tunes ect would help out but it looks like they are different.

ehhh..thats a tiny downfall of the 93. do the bypass and never worry bout it again

I haven't done a single thing yet, I have zero tools (I had no room on my move down). I did go to a stealership and they want 500 to fix it. My key reads fine at key code 2, but my key is bent.

This is what I have been seeing for almost 2 months. I dont know if it is going to not start for me or what but I also tried both sets of keys and the car starts right up.

Anyone with an F-car should have a bypass module ready to use at any time, since you will eventually have to use it, even if only temporarily.
You can measure the key resistance with an ordinary multimeter. If you don't have one, get someone who does to measure it (like a clerk at Radio Shack). Then look up the number on a chart like the one on shbox.com. Buy a bypass module to match the number and store it away somewhere accesible: http://www.ebay.com/itm/Vehicle-Anti-Theft-System-VATS-Bypass-Keycode-6-thru-10-/271370058197

Madman is a 93.... I guess tuned out, means a chip burned.
