View Full Version : Starts and dies after like 2 secs

OK guys finally got to finishing up the 95z. Only thing not connected/ missing is the evap valve and air pump. No vac leaks, cleaned maf, good fuel press good plugs and wires routed correctly. Start revs to about 1.5-2k and dies out. I can pump the pedal and jeep it running but poorly and no power. What else could I look at?

Check the temp sensor on the water pump. Is it flooding?

OK I'll do that next. Seems to be flooding but not enough to throw smoke random backfire through intake while pumping pedal to keep it running.. It will hold a very rough idle for a minute or so after warming it.

Yeah I would definitely change it. Its less than $10. My formula did that and it was actually the connector on mine. The pcm uses that sensor to adjust the fuel on startup. If its reading wrong and shows very cold it will dump alot of fuel and flood. Mine would start fine and I could cut it off and start it back up and it would barely run and be pouring smoke but mine would register 70 and if you moved it like -20 lol

Replaced both temp sensors. No change. I'm wondering if the tune put back on it was the close to stock one or not. When i pump the pedal to keep it running it actually cuts out when the pedal is depressed and revs after pedal is released then dies down almost sounds like lack of fuel. Maybe the tune was with the bigger injectors.? When above 3k it sounds healthy. Got it to idle for a min again and sounds like 2or3 cylinders. As far as I know the motor as is was running perfect before taken out of the vette. all stock besides long tubes, xpipe lt4km and tune ( which we weren't positive if it was the close to stock setup or not).

Just cleaned the Maf and no change in starting with or without it connected. I will check the tps.

When was the opti replaced last? Check and make sure the wires are on all the way, make sure they "click", pull the #1 plug and see what it looks like, also check the o2's, and does it have a check engine light?

Hmm why didn't I think about the o2s mine were horrible. And the opti can do some crazy stuff lol

Did the air charge sensor and tps. Its ldling a littler better warm now but issue still present. On to o2's tomorrow.

Coolant temp switch could be bad.
From your description of having to pump the pedal it really sounds like a bad fuel pump. How did you test the pressure and what was it?

OK so after replacing coolant sensor and switch, throttle pos sensor, air charge temp sensor, clean Maf, both o2's and double checking and cleaning all connections ground and plug wires the problem is still there. Fuel pressure is almost 50 primed and States within 5psi up/down pumping to keep it running.

Only other thing I can think of is coil or opti. Or possibly incorrect tune.

Have u just put headers? If so check to see if u burned the harness going down on the passenger side by the header.

Headers were on it when I got it. Checked those wires also because I thought the same thing.

Camaro comp with lt4 km and the tune he believed was close to stock before injectors and such. No ses light or security light staying on.

That was an idea too but if it was vats would I be able to keep it running by pumping the pedal or would it cut off completely?

Yes and no. Tune is what he believed to be close to stock (but wasnt positive). As the tune on it before was for the other built motor that he had in it. He swapped out that for the stock vette motor. Current vette engine in it is stock besides long tubes/exhaust and a racetronix fuel pump. And as far as I know both were running without issue prior to swapping motors.

Were there any major differences between lt1 camaro engines and lt1 corvette engines? Beside the few moved sensors?

No it should just shut off or not start at all if its vats.

I think the corvette and f body engine are identical really. Besides main caps and a few little things. Should run fine.

I did notice the vacuum line coming from the intake elbow to the opti is missing but the 1 from the opti to the intake manifold is there. Would an improperly ventilated opti cause this? Or maybe that vacuum line being gone it sucked in some crap?

no that shouldnt be causing your issue but def want to hook that up check for pinched wires with it starting and then dieing sounds like its loosing conection forget about the opti its fine check mass and map sensors conectors be sure to have the ones off the camaro motor on it and see if that works

OK. Already checked, cleaned with electric spray cleaner, dried, and dielectric greased every connector or plug I could find. Also swapped out the map and maf for my brother's which runs fine with no change. The only thing I haven't messed with or changed yet is the opti, coil, and wires( except for checking order). Another thing I noticed is the EGR exhaust tube is blocked off on the back of the intake but the EGR valve and vacuum lines are still hooked up. Could that be in issue? And the EVAP valve is gone. Not plugged in and vac lines capped. Otherwise everything seems to be routed correctly.

Wish I would have caught this thread earlier and saved you some diagnostic time. I'm almost 100% sure it's that tune. The whole swap came right down to the wire and I was rushing to find the stock tune so those guys could get back on the road to Phoenix. I just got inside and ate supper, I'll go through all my tunes tonight until I find the stocker and get it emailed to Dustin. That should be the final piece to this puzzle.

Also all of the emissions, evap, or other stuff your missing, just give me a holler and I'll ship it all over. I'm not sure how strict your sniffer stuff is over there, but I'll get you everything I can. We may have to swap over some of the hoses and vacuum lines from each others intakes since I they coincide with each other.

I know it's nothing mechanical because both the Vette and the Camaro were running great before I pulled everything for the big swap. I don't think any of the problems should be caused by the opti, but I was forced to swap the water pumps and regardless of it you think opti's can handle water or not, we all know there is only so much you can do to keep those things dry.

PS You got all the liquids squared away right? Coolant, brakes, etc? Also, that oil only has 500 miles on it, so that should save you some money for a bit.

Ok, time to hunt down this tune before I pass out, well over 24hours at this point, lol.

Its no problem man. I'm just relieved to know what it is. Stock motor on a stroker tune explains it lol. And yes its all squared away otherwise. Sitting thier egging me on lol. Just have to throw some cats on for emissions or run some alcohol for the test lol. Trying to get it and my brothers car ready for the last open drag night friday at firebird since speed world closed and firebird is close behind. I'll be looking into a tuner and cable tonight and that should button it up.

Would have been but the dealer has to do it in the car. I was going to just get tunercats and cable and a base email tune but I wanted it ready for tomorrows drag open drag night since its the last one their doing. Were going to run it (if all goes well with the reflash) and my brother car.

Tow was $60 and reflash is $115.
