View Full Version : Any advice routing spark plug wires?

This afternoon I got into the highway and the car started hesitating on acceleration.. At night I opened the hood, turned the lights of the garage off, started the engine and took a look inside looking for sparks arching out of the wires.. I found 3 different wires with sparks aching out... Clear random misfire on 3 different cylinders and scanner confirmed twice the diagnosis.. This is what happens when you get 7 mm Bosch cheap ass wires... Just ordered a MSD set of 8.5 wires and will be reusing my DEI Protect a Boot kit on them.. Any advice on what's the best way to route them thru the engine to keep them away from my LT headers?

I use autozone wires over the top without issues. I also have sleeves to protect the wires next to the primary.

If your referring to the routing on the passenger side of the block....take your time, do it one at a time..and you're gonna have a tight fit as far as putting them in there...
Make sure they're in there good..or you could have a pulley catch one...

I have accel 8.5mm's on my car now...I had jeggs 8.5 mm..they were just too long. .

The accels are the you make type...

In my experience, too long is as bad as too short..good luck..

I have some 7mm wires that I got as a stock replacement set from NAPA a couple years back and they fit perfect since day one in the stock routing locations with my longtubes. Did you use or still have the rails that bolt to the sides of the block? If you get the 8.5mm wires you might have more troubles as I've heard they wont fit in the stock routing locations.

Im running 8mm Taylor wires. Make sure you keep them away from anything it will catch on. And put a heat shield on them. Its a tight fit so its good insurance

I zip tie the wires to the rails, its a major pain to do but keeps the wires away from the primaries

hummm do any of you have pictures of those rails? I think I don't have them. As for the heat shield I have boot protectors and I think I should order a DEI Protect A Wire kit.. I've been wondering how complicated would be to pass them over the valve cover?

I just noticed that MSD 32149 are the wires that I don't have to cut to make them fit and they come already assembled, does this mean that I have to discard the over the valve cover arrangement?

Otvc is gonna need longer wires. I purchased tge lt1 cut to length wires...and we made our own.

It depends...I've seen premade that fit over and that route...but this was a while ago...

Go over the valve cover...looks awsome and it almost guarantees no burnt wires. That's how I had mine before I got my cantons.

I run the MSD 8.5's and pulled them close to the block from underneath, you can hardly see them.

Yeah I want to go with OTVC but I'm not sure if the ones I got from MSD will be long enough since they're custom fit :(

I ran 7mm's in the stock location with some insulation and have no issues arcing.

I picked up 8 or these from Advance Auto: http://www.summitracing.com/parts/dei-010501/media/images (http://www.designengineering.com/category/catalog/design-engineering-inc/ignition-wire-protection/titanium-protect-boots)

And got 8 of the factory impala shields (these are like gold to me haha):
http://www.ebay.com/itm/Impala-SS-Spark-Plug-Heat-Shield-Caprice-LT1-Z-28-NOS-/370423800370?pt=Motors_Car_Truck_Parts_Accessories&hash=item563efaa232&vxp=mtr

Zip tie the boots to the shields with stainless zip tie and go to lunch.

Thats if you wanna route them like stock with LT's... If I do it again I'll do over the valve covers just for the convenience factor of much more accessible and changeable.

Thanks for all the help guys. Effectively the wires were not long enough to go OTVC so routed them in the stock location, it was not as hard as I expected, all I had to do was to get rid of the stock wire separators so they don't get in the way and used zip ties to keep them away from the pulley. I also reused my boot protectors and I'm hoping they will last..

I'm so pissed... today the headers burnt cyl 5 and 6 wires even when I used the boot protectors, there's no way to route those 2 wires without touching the headers.. I can't believe how they got burnt so easily and having the protector...

I have to start all over and I will go with OTVC as I should've done it in the first place, I really need your help to tell me where can I get them and what the exact part number is and also what tools do I need? I'm so frustrated...

I had Taylor on mine.

No complaints and the wires are plenty long enough. Get the hand crimp tool and you will be on your way.

Also get the wire lube from a parts store and I used it in conjunction with liquid wrench to install the ends. They are snug lol.

I also found this kit somewhere else but they come with MSDs

http://www.mcssl.com/store/cc-performance-parts/catalog/product/e6839d9b70444b30990349ca0572b4d3

Don't know anything about the company that sells them though.. But the price looks good for having MSD wires

Step in the right direction here. I got there "do it yourself" kit which comes with the street fire wires and it also comes with a crimper you stick in your vise that is very easy to use. It took them a good week to ship them out for me but I'm not complaining. All in all it was a good kit.

I had them for almost a year. Only problem I had was a plug backed off and when it spun it turned the wire into a primary. But that wasn't the wires fault. I caught it early before it damaged the wire.

Ok thanks man, I ordered the CC Performance pre-cut and assembled kit. Didn't get the do it yourself kit because I wanted the MSD Superconductor wires but if they don't last, which I hope they will, I will try the Taylors

I sent them an email today, the guy said that I should get the wires by Monday but he didn't send me the tracking number though (I hate when that happens :frustrated:)

Well, emailed the guy last Friday, he said I was going to get the wires on Monday.. He never sent the tracking number and as you know I don't live in the US so the address I use is of a company that ships stuff that I buy online and take care of shipping them to my country so I don't have a way to know whether the package has been received or not except for the tracking number (which I don't have) and the company's website and it haven't appeared there yet..

I have been emailing him and calling him several times, rarely get answer by email and he never answers the phone, I need to know whether the package has arrived to the ship forward company or not but as I don't have the tracking number I don't know what to do.. there's a possibility that he may have missed my account number of the shipping forward company so they don't know that the package is for me, that's what I'm afraid off.. I'll just call the shipping forward company and ask them to search for the package..

While I wait it's been almost 2 weeks since the formula is sitting there just waiting for the wires.. crap..

When they are wrong, they are wrong. I hate it when they get all pissy as well, even though they know they were in the wrong. Now as long as you get them this time, all is golden. If not ... time for you to get pissy. You seem to be handling this very well! I'd be all kinds of bent out of shape, lol!

So guess what.. I'm still waiting.. 2 weeks after I placed the order.. unbelievable.. next time I will do my own wires, this is just ridiculous. If the package is not reported as received in the system of the company that will ship it to me by Monday, I'll just open up the case in PayPal and see if I can get a reimbursement on this.. I've never had such a bad experience buying online, I just can't believe this

Well I think he sells the kit on ebay too, and looks like he has good feedback, don't know why based on my experience, so I guess I was the only one with bad luck.. Anyway I don't think I'm going to buy from them anymore, I can't have the car parked for a month until they want to ship.. Honestly at this point all I hope is that I can get my money back if I'm not going to get the wires

The wires are finally here, the kit looks great, great wires (MSD super conductor), great assembly, the looms seem to be pretty good quality, I'm happy.. However I'm not sure I'm putting them in the right place, check these pics, hope somebody can guide me since the wires are not marked:
