View Full Version : Got my stangbang on today!

The day finally came and there was no more cheap talk. Time to put up or shut up! My Ford-fanboy friend, Daniel, has been talking a whole lot of shit about my car and saying his car is faster and how much better it is and blah blah blah. Well, today I cashed in my raincheck and we finally got out to the track (after last month's mishap where my fuel pump died and left me stranded halfway to the drag strip). These are the cars below:

1996 Trans Am WS6 [Manual 6-speed] - all stock 5.7L LT1, Flowmaster exhaust, TB bypass
1998 Mustang GT [Manual 5-speed] - stock 4.6L 2V, CAI, exhaust, 3.73 gears, tune, Saleen body kit (lol)

16549

I'm car #64, he's car #71 (although one of the timeslips has him as car #7 because he rolled his window all the way down and took the 1 off lol).

I was having a blast and using the dyno sheet from last week to my advantage and really pushing the car hard. I made 8 passes in total today and managed to really improve my best time from when I last went in October. The DA today was about 750 ft. (MUCH better air) and I improved my best time by 0.364s today and improved my fastest run by 3.67 MPH today (on a run that was my 2nd fastest time today), putting me at a new best time of 14.462s at 98.28 MPH. My fastest speed run was a 14.486s at 98.72 MPH. I'm pretty happy with my bird today moving out like that.

16551

I also ran into another LT1 guy later in the day out there. He has a red 97 Trans Am M6 (car #89) that's all stock with a CAI and Flowmaster as well. I asked him if he was up for a run for shits and giggles and he jumped at it. First race we had, he missed 3rd gear, so we ran em again and damn was it a close race! From the video, you'll see that I beat him as first across the line, but somehow our timeslips read that he beat me by 0.17 seconds, so I guess he won that one lol. Afterward, we got to talking and he mentioned he's always been a hardcore LTX guy, so I told him about our forum and said he should check it out. I got his name and number as well, so I'll be reminding him to check us out and join up :D His name is Derious and I hope to see him join up soon.

16552

As for Daniel and I, we made 6 passes in total racing each other, although 1 of the races the guys working the staging lanes messed us up and held him back so another car could cut in front of him and run with me :frustrated: so we just had to compare timeslips on that one. I ended up racing a Nissan Altima (not sure what year, car #33 in the timeslip above) with SOMETHING done to it cuz he beat me by 0.430s. Ironically, that was also the pass where I set my new record lol. He raced some car that we didn't even pay attention to, so no clue what it was, didn't look lol. He beat it though, so at least he got 1 win today lmao. In one of the videos from close to the end of the track, my other friend who went with us was recording to see the difference at the last cones before the 1/4 mile mark, I missed 3rd and had to correct and lost a good .3 on my time from it, but as we crossed the cone you can see I'm still a full car ahead of him hahaha. This was his 6th and final run and Daniel FINALLY managed to break into the 14s and his gave best run of the day at 14.980s at 90.71 MPH. As I mentioned before in another thread, his fear of hurting his car was his biggest weakness here, as I found out he was shifting at only 5000 RPMs and wouldn't run it any higher. I kept trying to get him to run it higher, but he refused, so his loss. Btw, he's also putting the car up for sale tomorrow and looking to buy a truck now haha.

16553

Alright, time for videos! I'll let these do the talking from here. Please excuse the in-car camera angle, I don't own a GoPro, so I was using a car mount for my SGS2 stuck to the T-Top to film out the window and it only rotates so far, so it's staring right at the T-Top bar lol, but you can still see the other car just fine. :)

I still love Mustangs but as soon as I saw what year his car was I didnt need to read any further because I already knew who won, the late 90s cars were slow and even when my 90 was bone stock except for mufflers and a K&N I used to smoke them bad and my coupe was running 2.73 gears as well.
Congrats on the ass kicking you gave him LOL.

Haha I don't think he was very happy with his car today. Unfortunately I didn't get it on video, but in one race, I was fucking with him cuz we took off, I hit second and looked over at him and waved buh-bye like a nut and he disappeared out of view hahahaha.

Mrs. Mad wants a Mustang but I have friends at Napa Ford from back in the day when I used to do business with them and have been thinking that if I land the job with our local utility company then I am going to save up 10G's and have my friends find me a 2008 Shelby GT500 for her, I have lousy credit after a divorce ect and figure that putting that much down and making huge payments I could pay it off inside a year and the wifey gets her car and I get going on fixing my credit. I dont know of many people who would turn down this car.....

I also figure that after putting up with me being out of work for OVER 2 damed years with zero shit over it she deserves not just a Mustang but a Shelby!
I even have a license plate picked out that honors her father who was a Firefighter who she lost when she was just 13 years old that has a pic in the corner of a fireman coming out of a building on fire that reads (NEENS), her first name is Jeneen and I think she will love it so now I just gotta make it happen.

I think Shelby's are way overrated, But any women that can/will put up with a gearhead husband, not mention the stuff it sounds like you two are going through, deserves any damn thing she wants, even if it is a Slowby.

Nice runs!
My buddy has a 88 stang 5spd with a 5.0 stroked to a 347? (I think), a cam I don't know the specs on and edelbrock heads and intake, stock suspension and nitto 555s. We raced the 1/4 about 2 years ago at BIR when my bird (m6) only had full exhaust, CAI, and SFCs + LCAs and some regular street tires. He was crossing the traps 1.5ish mph faster then I was and less then half a second faster in the 1/4 and he couldn't believe it LOL. Granted his top end isn't what it could be, he was seriously disappointed. Since then he's been working on a real nice 351 windsor. I like cars from any manufacturer if they are good cars, but I really don't like those late 90s stangs. Chief on the list of why is they are so got dayum ugly. My buddy with the 88 agrees with that one lol.

The 08 is within my 25k budget and its not a car that I see a lot of and it does make 500 HP and its also gotta be a stick because thats how she likes her musclecars.

My friend mark has an 07' gt500 that at one point made 700 rwhp on a mustang dyno. That was with a kb 2.8 and bolt-ons. It ran 10.30@137 weighing 4200lbs with him in it (he's a big guy at 325lbs). It now makes 550rwhp with a stock blower as he's getting ready to buy a 2013' gt500. Nice runs man. Those times are really close to what mine ran stock. I think my best was 14.39@97.

not trying to be the douche but how is it stock with a cai and a flowmaster, thats considered bolt on parts..... and a 2v against a lt1 isnt a fair race for a lt1 different leagues

Well considering I have the ram air intake, I call his CAI an evening mod, and we both have Flowmasters, so we were evenly matched part for part, purge than mine being a WS6 and his a regular Trans Am. It was a great driver's race.

As for the LT1 vs the 2V, you know it's an uneven match, I know it's an uneven match, but Daniel refused to believe it was an uneven match. He and I have been at that argument for a year and a half lol. So, to finally put the argument to rest and prove to him what I had been telling him all along, we raced. Time slips will settle all arguments and he had nothing to argue after the day was done.

As everybody already said, 90s and earlier 2000s mustangs are no competition for the LT1.. Except when they have a whole bunch of mods on them.. A friend of mine has a fully modified 03 with supercharger and a lot more goodies and that thing runs hard. Nice kill and BTW I love the looks of your T/A, so nice!

Have to agree that is one VERY pretty car and as far as the 2k Mustangs the Terminator is a force to be reckoned with if its done right because I have seen them with 1500 bucks worth of stuff done to them laying down and honest 500 HP to the wheels and thats no slouch in anybodys book.

Right but my friend's stang is not a Cobra, is a GT but fully modified (Paxton supercharger, bigger injectors, shorty headers, PCM tune, etc, etc), the one who has a Cobra is his father :), it's a 01 but fully modified as well (Vortech supercharger, bigger injectors, water intercooler, 3.73s, etc etc etc LOL)

Haha thank you guys! It's definitely gorgeous from 10 ft., but up close you can see some minor imperfections. Minor swirling on the hood, some dings in the clearcoat on the door near the edges from the previous owner, a small thing of spiderwebbing on the driver-side corner of the rear bumper. But overall, it's definitely in WAAAAY better shape than any other one I looked at when I was hunting for this baby, so no complaints here :D

Headers are very soon on my to-do list haha. First up is SFCs, then Kooks LTs and Borla to open her up and get the sweet sound I want.

The red stripes on the hood kind of remind me a friends T/A but instead of having subtle stripes it has a huge red triangle on the hood which I personally think looks great, he also has BMW X5 Sport wheels on it, you can see it with my Formula (When I just purchased it so you can see the bra on it still). Sad to say my car looked like shit next to my friend's T/A back then :(

I remember looking at the then new 2002 Trans Am and seeing the "Ram Air" on the hood thinking wow this is cool but I also remember thinking that it had an engine that was a still new design that I wasnt comfortable with because I still had a bad taste in my mouth over Fords so called new and improved Mod motor so I passed on getting a TA in 02 but the Ram Air thing still was cool in my mind and is still now.

Kind of, it was missing a few interior parts like one seatbelt cover, the dash pad was broken, it had a lot engine issues like burnt spark plugs, faulty injectors, faulty opti, faulty EGR, broken starterm burnt hoses, etc, etc, etc.. I even had to replace the tranny really soon after I bought it :( So many issues... But it was mostly because of the guy who had the car before the guy who sold it to me. The guy who sold it to me was trying to get it back in good shape but he jumped into a different project. I've had to take care of everything and finally I think it's in MUCH better shape now but there's still a lot more to do, you know how it works when you finally get the car you dreamed about when you were a kid but when you get to have it, it is 17 years old :)

I understand what you mean man..when. I was 15-16..all I wanted was a 94 blue z28.. 6 speed...I worked my way up to it...71 Chevy custom 10, had an ls6 454 from a chevelle in it (Shoulda kept it)

Had a 77 Camaro, 305 with a th350 and a shift kit..

Had a 79 TA, had a 265 with after market fuel injection..bop th350 with a shift kit..

82 TA KITT.. looked just like kitt..except we put a 70 chevelle 350 with a fire ball 2 cam and a 70 chevelle th350 w/shift kit and a trans cooler..

89 iroc stock...

94 firebird..v6..yuck..

94 firebird formula gt current car..still not the camaro..but I've dumped so much into the car to get it fresh..hoses, wires, vacuum tubes, parts.....worse than the 82...cause parts are more specific and costly...

But son of a bitch will this car run!!! Lol.

Ouch, man that sucks. :( Mine when I got it had the cracked dash, missing the ash tray insert and coin holder, and none of the center caps for the original WS6 wheels. Shortly after, the antenna motor died on me, so no radio for me right now lol. But for a 17 yr old car, I got REALLY lucky finding it a cared for as it was, even though it cost me $9,320 lol.

I wish you lived close to me. I sold mine for 5 with all the stuff it had done to it. Lowered with eibach sportlines, 97-01 ws6 wheels, full stainless exhaust, umi tunnel mount torque arm, otvc, red leather, all the decals and overlays, honeycomb tails, charcoal ceta, and a 97+ console with a Dave bormet metal boot ring and tna short throw with a white Hurst knob. Also had the airbox painted gloss black with Pontiac ram air done in red.

It's funny how there are only 2 things from your car that I didn't have on mine already when I saw it: the wingtips (which I now have on) and the repainted air box (still on my to-do list). Sexy looking car though! And only $5000? Man, you could have gotten much more than that I think. I honestly think I got a pretty good deal at $9k for the condition mine was in when I got it.

Oh I forgot 2 other things mine had wrong with it when I got it. The console lid had a half-broken hinge, so it stayed on, but it wobbled side to side bad. The driver side mirror was also sort of hanging because the mounting bracket inside had been broken. Daniel picked up replacement parts for both for me on a trip to the junkyard and it only cost me like $20 or so and I still have an extra console lid and side mirror housing lol. I broke even on getting the honeycomb tail lights and selling my LT1 tail lights. Once I get my parts in from Jamie, I'll have only put about $210 or $215 into restoring all the broken/missing parts in the car and it will have everything at that point. Only thing left to do then will be to get my headliner redone, as it's starting to sag just a little bit in the back, so I'll get it done before it gets bad. The driver's seat tear will go when I replace the seats with some racing seats. And done! :D

Sent from my screamin chicken pimped out SGSII

Yeah man, it has been lots of work and learning but it's been worthy! The car is in great shape now, not perfect but it is totally a different story now than when I go it

I love reading ya'll new LT1 owners threads. I am really glad people are picking up these old cars and showing them the love they deserve. I really love the kill stories. These cars have been forgotten by alot of people and they get reminded just how fast these cars are the hard way!

That's right, I love my car even though I've had to struggle a lot getting it back in good shape, but that tastes better, even more when you do it yourself!
