So I made mention of this on Sunday in Bacon Bites, but I've been busy all week and haven't had time to sit down and type this out lol. This past Sunday I went to a Daytona 500 watching party with some friends/coworkers and one of the guys there has a bone stock 2006 LS2 GTO. We had been talking and I decided to see if he was up for a little fun and willing to run me, knowing I'd lose, but I wanted to see how my WS6 stacks up to one. We convinced another friend there to go with us to film and then he grabbed his keys, ducked his wife, and we snuck out to go have a little fun on the street. There is a conveniently placed vacant 1/2 mile road behind their apartment that never gets used and there's a stop sign halfway down the street marking 1/4 mile, so you can see where this is going lol. The extra friend rode in the GTO (I called it a weight handicap for me :shiner:), but he forgot to actually record anything, so he was just along for the ride, basically :frustrated:. I will say that the GTO was riding on stock 235 tires that were on their last layer of compound before he'd be driving on bands, so traction was not going to be his friend here.

We started out from a 20-roll as we came around the bend heading into the 1/2 mile straight. He honked it out 3 times and we punched it. Immediately he jumped out ahead of me, but I was at his rear bumper. As soon as he hit 2nd, he lost traction and started fishtailing pretty bad. I let off the gas, as I didn't feel like letting his car's ass end slam into my car's nose, so once he got it to stick again, of course he took off and just blasted away as I then put my foot back in it - talking like 747 lengths here :( But I didn't care, I'll take a loss over a wreck any day. We went down to the other end of the street, U-turned, and then came back up to the stop sign for a 1/4 mile dig.

This time, I knew I'd put him behind me. As he honked it off, I brought it up to 2200 RPMs, waited for honk 3, and let it drop. I had just a tiny bit of wheel screech and then took off, blasting ahead while he spun his ass off on those bald tires :D I ran up 1st to 5700, shifted into 2nd and held it down, 5700 again and shifted to 3rd, then as I hit 5000 RPMs he came outta nowhere and blew past me putting about 4 cars on me before hitting the brakes lol. We pulled to a stop and I asked him if he was down for one more run, as I was just curious to see what my car would do from a 2nd gear launch (hadn't ever tried before, but figured what the hell, I'm already losing anyway). U-turned again and lined up from a dig.

This time he let me honk it off. I put it in 2nd, honked once, honked twice, brought it up to about 3000, honked third time and let 'er rip. At this point, I couldn't tell if I was spinning the tires or making the clutch slip, but the GTO was spinning his ass off once again and we were staying door to door. Once he finally caught traction he pulled ahead a half a car, then hit 2nd and ran away from me again, bus lengths this time. Moral of the story is, no 2nd gear launches for me lol.

After we went back to the apartment, I was checking my car and found its first dimple in the passenger rear quarter panel from the launch in the 2nd race, so soon I'll be getting some SFCs in and welded on to prevent that happening anymore and try to get this one fixed with some cold/heat trickery. All in all though, it was fun just to mess around and see how far behind my car is stock to stock.

This guy also has an 83 Camaro he's built up that'll run 12s on motor and hit into the 10s on nitrous. I told him about going to Dallas Raceway this weekend with some buddies and asked if he wanted to bring out the Camaro and put us to shame lol. He said he'd try, but he has to get an ignition switch put in and his drag wheels/tires put back on it to be able to make it and he's pretty slammed at work all week. Hoping he can make it, I really wanna see it run :) He also has a 70-something El Camino with a mildly built engine that he's held on to since high school. Pretty cool guy to talk to and luckily he's not one of the LSX snobs who starts talking shit about LTXs lol. Now I just gotta find a way to get him to buy an LTX and join up here...

Well, I've seen his engine bay and looked around in there and didn't see any nitrous plumbing, so either he hid it very well or I'm a blind fool lol. But nah, he hasn't put any nitrous on the GTO, said he's perfectly happy with leaving it stock as it sits for a fun daily driver car and spending all his money on the 83 Camaro.

As fast as those ls2 goats are, has anyone else noticed that a lot of them blow up???

Idk if its how hard they were flogged or not maintained.., but I've heard tons of people had to have a fresh ls2 put in, or that went with a built cast iron block...

Am I the only one?

Hmm never heard of that, but I also can count the number of people I've met with LS2 GTOs on one hand with a few fingers amputated lol.

I was wondering...there are 5 of them I think, that were covered in high performance Pontiac..and 3 had blown the original ls2 up..

Idk..I'll chalk it up to being one of those things I "heard" lol

Lol might also depend on how modded up they were, or maybe LS2s don't take too kindly to mods? Not sure really.

Maybe its the homegrown tuners... Leaner is meaner......for a little bit.

Duh.... Lol

And all aluminum motors love being run hot and lean.

That bone stock GTO is good for about .8 in the 1/4 and several MPH better than a bone stock LTx WS6. Eight tenths in the 1/4 is a LONG time when you're in that 13 second range.

Yeah, that first run where I had to let off really had me discouraged when I watched him rocket away from me lol. The 2nd run wasn't bad at all I thought since he couldn't get traction lol, but I know it'd be much worse if he had some new rubber.

Doesn't sound like a stock gto to me. I could easily walk ls1 goats with my ws6 and ls2s I beat although they were a little closer. I was about 2 tenths faster at the track with a slipping clutch. The one i lined up with ran a 9.6 to my 8.9. You gotta get some longtubes on that thing lol.

Yeah, I do :( but SFCs have to come first now. And it's stock, I looked all over that thing. Stock idle, no cam. Manifolds and factory exhaust (mine's louder than his with my Flowmaster lol). But keep in mind mine is also stock as hell and he's probably putting a good 75 HP to the ground more than I am with that LS2 based on my dyno numbers.

Lol yeah I'd say he's got quite a bit more drag racing experience than I do, so he's probably a bit better than me on the shifter haha. ;)

At least in this area.
