View Full Version : relocating the icm?

I'm thinking about moving my icm over to the strut area somewhere to help keep it cool and fail less. Any of you guys done something similar? Just wondering if i will run into any problems extending the harness with voltage or resistance issues. Any help or ideas are greatly appreciated.

Just space it off the head some

^^^ All of that. Also make sure to use thermal paste between the ICM and heat sink. All it takes is a couple of common washers for an air gap between cylinder head and heat sink.

^^^ditto on both. That THERMAL grease, not dielectrical, is very important. The washer mod is easy and cheap and makes a big difference.

I actually spaced it off the head with some stainless nuts. Used some very good thermal grease and make sure that grounds are in good condition.

Agreed with the above. There's no need to relocate it altogether. A few washers to space it off the head is really all you need.

Ok figured I'd spit ball the idea. Never hurts to ask.

Or use some leftover bolts and spacers from putting headers on. About 1/2" space with em.

I've got it spaced about a 1/2 inch now but it still gets pretty hot. Just got another new one today and it came with a little packet of dielectric grease, about enough to cover my pinky finger nail lol. Now i gotta get some heat paste somewhere

Mine is located o the procharger bracket...

It actually had accomodations for it.

I was about to say that the factory manifold studs work perfectly for spacing the ICM from the head... Both of my cars have that done, never had a failure.

I'm gonna try to space it a bit more and see if that helps

Did u get it to start again after we textes the other week?

When you space it off the head you eliminate much of the conductive heat - that is what heat is absorbed from the head directly into the bracket. When you space it off you only have the two studs to conduct the heat into the bracket. The air gap between helps with the radiant cooling.

No Larry i haven't, i just picked up a new icm yesterday. I'm gonna put it on tonight once i track down some heat paste.

Check out your local computer place and try using Artic Silver if you can get it, the stuff works really great for computer CPU's so I cant see going wrong with using it for an ICM.

I used the one i got from the junk yard but after it got hot it quit and wouldn't restart. Haven't tried to restart it now that its cooled off but I'm gonna throw the new one on with plenty of paste and space it as much as i can and hope that solves out.

Or use some leftover bolts and spacers from putting headers on. About 1/2" space with em.

The spacers from the stock exhaust work great and look much better than putting flat washers in there. Also, I have had good luck using anti-sieze compound as thermal paste. Most of us have it in the tool box and it has the same basic properties PC thermal paste (I've used it on my computer CPUs without issue as well.)

1sicks10
02-27-2013, 11:46 AM
So your saying i can use just regular old silver anti seize?

Mystery Bird
02-27-2013, 02:54 PM
Anti sieze might work for a while but it's made up of oil and aluminum I believe. It's meant to be pasted on nuts and bolts but the oil evaporates over time and you're only left with the dust. It might hold up on the heat sink since it doesn't get that hot but I would still use the thermal grease.

Update, ok so i put on the new icm and spaced it an inch or more off the head. Put out all back together and still no spark at the plug or coil so I'm going to take the coil to the parts store along with all 3 icms and have them tested. Its looking like i may have a bad coil, its a msd street fire. Wish me luck

Ryan Stout
02-28-2013, 01:05 AM
Also remember that if they test good its not 100%. I had one that was testing good but was bad. Only started acting up when hot.

Short run down is car quit running, no spark at the coil or the plug. The icm has no paste or anything on it so i pulled a gm one off of a car at the junk yard and put it on and fired right up. Was fine till the car got hot and it wouldn't restart. Put a brand icm on last night and still no spark at the coil or the plug so from what the guys on here have told me if no spark at the coil our at the plug then its the icm or the coil

It depends on the auto zone...I was a store manager at auto zone and we didn't have anything other than an alternator/starter tester...and an obd2 scanner.. .oh.. and battery tester and chargers...that was here in Port Arthur...

They're getting rid of stuff at some stores..idk y. I said it was stupid too.

Have any of you done the air gap mod for the ignition control module?? Just put a flat washer between the icm and the head at all four bolts...and obviously the dielectric grease...

I think it might really depend on the market for that area...they've even cut down on available stock at the warehouses on certain things...especially on performance parts that are now company direct...they used to keep "some" of the manufacturer direct parts on hand...
They don't down here.. not anymore...it sucks...

The funny part is that the economy has been awesome for auto zone and places like them. People now need to save the cash and do the work themselves... so i don't see why some areas are downsizing inventory..

Well so far so good. As much as i hate to admit it, i only did the plug wires on the driver side. Ran out of time and patience on the passenger side. On a good note, the old wires say AC Delco on them but didn't look very old but when i got to number 7, the wire was not a Delco wire and looked old and crusty and when i tugged on it it broke right in half. Obviously somebody tried number 7 and said fuck it lol and left the old one in there.

Yup sure is, i haven't gave it more than 1/4 throttle but its running better than it has since i got it. I'm sure my problem was that number 7 wire. Had it running in the shop with the lights off and not one trace of a arcing wire. Now its on to my list of mods to do before oc
