I had my stereo installed about 6 years ago, everything was replaced, wires, speakers, amp and sub was added. Anyways, the Pioneer head unit doesn't have an aux jack to plug my phone or mp3 into. My question is, are head units of the same brand typically plug and play? Can I buy a newer, single deck Pioneer with a jack and just swap them? Hopefully still maintaining all the adjustability of the sub and quality of sound. Thanks

With you head unit being the age it is. Im going to say the harness won't plug in. different models will have different connectors.

Actually, I've been looking around and I'm seeing an adapter now that plugs into the back of the unit and has a 3.5mm jack on the other end... I wasn't aware it has this so it may be what I can do instead of buying a new unit.

Not too happy with the cable I bought... sound quality goes down and where I normally play the volume at 10-15, now it has to be up in the 30's to match that. I can adjust the quality somewhat, but I really don't want to keep playing with the sound everytime I switch between CD, Aux, and Tuner. It's possible my phone just didn't produce quality sound, so I am going to charge up my old ipod touch and see if that helps.

Jumped the gun again... I have a Casio Commando which is basically a brick of a phone and I guess the jack doesn't seat fully in the phone because the case is so thick. I plugged my ipod in and it sounded much better. Not quite CD quality but very close.

what i would do is ditch the old wiring harness and the adapter you got. cut it off. buy the proper wiring harness and connect it up with wire nuts or another method. that's the best way , most harnesss come with intructions for coordinating wires.

I'm not totally sure what you mean by cutting the wiring harness. The cable I got plugs into the back of the head unit at the IP bus I think it's called, then goes directly to the headphone jack of any device. It does sound good, just slightly less than a CD. I am still playing around with the sound adjustment on the head unit, which I don't know anything about lol. But it sounds good enough now for me not to want to cut anything up.
