View Full Version : Road race coming up

So on March 2nd, there's an open invitation to a lead-follow road race event at Eagles Canyon Raceway. They have a nice open 2.5 mile road course and since it'll be free to join in the fun, I'm really wanting to go. As it sits, my car is still stock everything though - no upgrade parts at all yet. I know I'm at least going to need a set of high friction race pads or I'll run out of brakes when I least expect it.
My questions are what are some good pads that are a decent price point that will hold up to about 4 laps around the track for a day? And should I look into getting new rotors as well? I'm not sure if my stock solid rotors will hold up, I'll let you guys with more experience call that one. Should I also replace the brake fluid with some Super Blue Racing fluid before heading out there? I've been looking at stranoparts.com which seems to have some pretty good prices:
http://www.stranoparts.com/partdetails.php?PartID=472&CategoryID=7&ModelID=4
http://www.stranoparts.com/partdetails.php?PartID=473&CategoryID=7&ModelID=4
http://www.stranoparts.com/partdetails.php?PartID=140&CategoryID=7&ModelID=4
Still not sure what pads I should be shooting for though and that's obviously going to be the most critical component.
Also, please be honest and let me know if I am over-thinking this for a first-time-out lead-follow event where they probably aren't going to let me do anything too retarded anyway.

I like the EBCs....
But recently ive been using monoe or benddix cause they are free replacement.
Think about sticky tires...

Do NOT cheap out on your brake pads man. One of the cars that my school supports is a showroom stock civic, and that thing eats brake pads, even with the top of the line ones they are allowed to run. And by eats I mean the guy bends the backing plates of the pads. Brand new pads that are made useless after one run. Trust me on this one, get good EBC or equivalent pads. In a car as heavy as ours, the one thing you want working right is the brakes.

good pad like ebc or hawk. Solid rotors will be your best bet. mabe spring for some better lines.
Good tires! last thing you want is wrong set of tires. and go sliding off track. or having wheels lock up to easy.

So I shouldn't look into slotted rotors at all for road racing applications? I know cross-drilled are a bad idea due to proneness to cracking.

I currently have a set of 275/40-17 Kumho Ecsta 4X on with about 4,050 miles on them, just rotated today (I know I waited a bit long to rotate them, my bad).

The slotted rotors couldn't hurt, but the majority of performance pads now a days have provisions to prevent the build up of gas between the rotor and the pad. About the only advantage you would gain from going to a slotted rotor is it would act like a cheese grater on your pads and keep the pad material adjacent to rotor fresh, at the cost of going through pads a lot quicker and an increased amount of brake dust.
You can do slotted rotors if you want to, but in all reality they probably aren't necessary.

I usually rotate about every 5k on my truck and the wife's car. I run wider tires in the rear on the bird so rotating is a bit out of the question there.

Plus slotted rotors just look so nice :D but I guess function over beauty is more important right now lol. So pads for sure, the stock solid rotors on it right now should be fine, and any thoughts on the brake fluid? Necessary or not?
Edit: Also, between EBC and Hawk pads, which would be the better option? I only see like a $16 difference in price on the two.

I run Wilwood fluid in my car.
I have drilled/spotted rotors. But i am also running Wilwood brake kits. with aggressive pads(dust is horrible) and the rotors are hefty pieces and are cyro treated.

When you do the pads, give your rotors a good once over and make sure they aren't cracked or warped.
Just make sure it looks clean. You may even want to think about flushing the system. Regular DOT 3 or 4 will do you fine. Do NOT use DOT 5. It's more thermally stable than 3 or 4, but it doesn't mix with water very well, and at elevated temps you can see steam/air pockets form that will give you unpredictable pedal feel. For optimum results I would say do a system flush and put some new DOT 3 or 4 in there, but in a pinch you could just do a quick bleed to get the old fluid out of the calipers, since it's not a dedicated track car. On the cars we support at school, we might do a system flush once, maybe twice a season, we usually just make sure that the fluid in the calipers is fresh from run to run.

Eventually I'll get some Wilwoods under my wheels, but right now they're way out of my budget. I can only assume the difference between stock LT1 calipers and Wilwoods is insane. Probably likely to get me rear-ended in traffic around here lol.

I glanced over them today while I was scrubbing my wheels clean and swapping tie rod ends and didn't notice anything, but I'll be sure to do a more thorough check when I put the pads on. How many pints would I need if I go for a full brake system flush?

Only big chain store around here is O'Reilly's Auto Parts (AutoZone doesn't count). Unfortunately though, the store I have always used just went through a staff change and I fear they're going to end up like AutoZone... I had to fucking spell "tie rod end" for the woman on the register today cuz she typed "tye" and now I always have to catch myself and tell them I have a 96 "Firebird" to get anything right. If I say Trans Am, they always select the "Trans Sport" and then try to tell me I don't know what I'm looking for. I miss the old guys who worked there and actually knew shit about cars.

Just ordered some EBC green pads from Summit, already got brake fluid in the garage. My friend with the BMW who kept saying he could probably beat me on a road course dropped out today, he's afraid of wearing out his relatively new $1500 brake replacement (his calipers decided to randomly clamp down and lock up on him doing 80 on the highway and destroyed the whole assembly right down to the hubs) and he's currently losing hours really bad at his job and looking for a new one. Guess we'll have to settle that score another day. On the flip-side though, an acquaintance through a mutual friend is big into road racing here and has raced numerous times on this track and is offering tips and tricks, so I'll overlook the fact he's a die-hard Mustang fan :shiner:
Also, bump for my question above about the oil thing. Anyone?

You will do fine with stock pan. If you are going to go more focused on autox/road course racing. Go to a canton pan.
The Canton will give you more oil and keep temps down. But like i said isn't needed till you decide to make it more of a track car.

You will have a blast! And it is very addicting. Trust me the addiction has consumed my life and bank account lol.
I am in the SCCA. And i do recommend if you enjoy it. To go out and join your local chapter. There are lots of benefits to it. like reduced entry fees and instruction classes. I am one of the instructors for my region. And we do a 2 day class/event for 20.00 every April. Where we show people the ropes. then send them out and compete.

BMR 1 inch drop lower A-Arms
BMR upper A-Arms
UMI 3 point sfc

Hellwig sway bars (adjustable rear)
strano springs are good(same specs as my bmr). Belisten is a ok shock. and many seem to run them. But Koni yellows would be something to look at. offers ability to adjust. And pop up used time to time for a good price. Or if price is big issue look at kyb shocks. good price and are adjustable.

I know having a good setup is key in road course but if you are following people i dont think you are really gonna be pushing that hard. That is true, it is just a lead-follow event, but I've always been really hyped about road racing and would really like to lay out my plans for building my current WS6 into a road race car. I'm only getting the brake pads and flushing the system for next Saturday, that should hold me over for a while. I'm only spending a little piece of my tax return coming in early, so the rest will go toward paying off the car sooner lol.

Belstiens are far from the best. Don't get me wrong they are good. But they have a set compression/rebound. and was valved around elbech springs. strange and bmr (best springs IMO) are linear rate springs with way different spring rates from elbech.
KYB shocks are in same price point as Belstiens and are adjustable(ran them prior to my QA1's)
As far as parts i would start at the spring/shocks, panhard, TA, sways, sfc, rear control arms.
when you lower the car. you want to get your rear centered and at right opinion angle. first so TA and Panhard first.

Got my brake fluid in tonight, so I'm all set for tomorrow. New bump stops, EBC greenstuff pads (front & rear), super blue brake fluid, getting all 4 rotors turned, and a full brake system flush to fill up with all new fluid.

Going to try to take it easy a bit on the car this weekend, then I'll get some SFCs ordered here soon and before I do anymore racing.

Looks like it is based on this site:
http://www.tirerack.com/brakes/brakes.jsp?make=ATE&model=Super+Blue+Racing+Fluid&group=Super+Blue+Racing+Fluid&cat=BrakeFluid
I won't be mixing it though, just flushing everything old out and pouring in the new till it's full lol.

Might be worth checking out in your area.
Today was fucking AWESOME! That was so much fun I'm still coming off the adrenaline high in my head! I'm getting the videos of it uploaded to YouTube right now, but I have 3 and each one is almost 20 mins and over 1 GB LOL. I'll throw up the links (probably tomorrow) once they finish uploading. Thanks for the tips and advice man! I will DEFINITELY be getting into this once I get some SFCs welded up at minimum, and then I'll get into the rest of the suspension. I repeat what I said before with confirmation now: drag racing is fun, but HOLY BALLS road racing is a blast!

Should I post them up in here when they're done uploading or should I make a separate thread in the racing section?
