View Full Version : A thought on LTx Cylinder Heads

The question has been asked over and over by the uninformed. Can you use a LSx cylinder head on an LTx? Obviously no, but that's had me pondering something for a long time now.
WHY has no company redesigned the SBC/LTx head rather than trying to improve upon it? Seems to me that GM made the move back to the equal spread ports for a reason. And looking at it, with an evenly distributed intake side of the head, you get better airflow distribution through the manifold. On the exhaust side, you don't have two exhaust ports damn near Siamese'd just feeding each other heat.
Couldn't a case be made for a company to ground up redesign the LTx/SBC heads, even port distribution, and reap the potential benefits. I'm thinking that with the ports evenly spaced, more area would be available to the runners allowing lower valve angles, better runner design, etc.
Thoughts?

What does the bolt pattern look like compared between the two? I wonder if that would affect the port design any.

Rookie mistake here. I never put thought towards the bolt pattern. That probably just summed it up.
Ray, I love that concept you posted. But honestly, WHY? For simple motor mount location/sbc internals to mate with the LS heads? Why not just LS block and be done with it.

But with sbc internals. You can try different cranks rod compression ratios. I think its an interesting idea...like turducken.

Maybe someone wants to run LS style heads but they are restricted to SBC architecture block?

I actually looked into this a couple years back...a local race series outlawed LSx motors in anything that didnt have an LSx in it from the factory, yet you could run a 575cid BBC in a fox body....so I was going to build a SBC powered fox body using class legal heads :)
but lets say you allready have all the sbc rotating assemble/cam etc...than this would be a bit cheaper than a whole new motor swap

SBC internal are very cheap and you can find them everywhere. Why not combine the simplicity of a SBC internals and high flow ls head style.

Late to the party.
I too suffer from LSx envy from time to time as well. But, I visit this site & I'm cured for a little while. 10 Second LTx..... what's the point of going exotic? What would be the benefit? I think a 500 hp motor is going to be eat gas regardless if it's an LTx or LSx. Driveability won't be improved, I don't think. Fuel injection is fuel injection & you guys here have figured out how to use the LS computers to control the LT motors.
I'm sure there will be some gains in fuel economy & power, but not enough.

Those won't work with our blocks.... 2.200 intake that's very much a large bore head.

ah yes the world lock, badass!!!! i fi could have sold my block, top end, and crank all at once i would have turned this dream into a reality :)
