View Full Version : 1987 T/A project

Just to recap. I bought a 56 Chevy years ago. A few years back we tore into it but didn’t get far. Late last year we tore it all apart to find out that the body was totally screwed. I tried to sell it off for parts.. got nowhere, then I found a site where a guy hybrid a 1988 IROC with a 56 Chevy and it was awesome. So I decided I was going to try that. I found an 87 T/A for $600 bucks. I went to pick it up and bring it home for the cutting to begin. My 14 year old pointed out how "not too bad" the 87 really is. SO we decided to mothball the 56 (again) and restore the 87. It is a 305/700r4 car with t-tops. The T/A spoiler is missing, but all the GFX are there and the body is pretty damn straight. The interior is shot, but not totally gone. Odometer shows 214K+ miles but I am not deterred. My 62 Impala had well over 350K miles and I got it back to life. Plans now are to gut the interior, fix the small amount of body work, and get the 305 running good enough to pass DMV. Then see if we can get antique / classic tags for it her in DE. Then if we do, pull the 305 and go nuts. Body work needed is to patch one hole in the rear inner fender and fix 2 minor dents on the pass side fender. Interior will get racing seats and the dash cleaned up. Also some custom touches. Color has already been decided as Sunset Orange Metallic with a black /orange interior. Wheels to be determined. My 3.23 4th gen rear will go in and all the suspension will be gone through and upgraded (and lowered!!) This is going to be MUCH easier than cutting and welding this to the 56. I hope to make good progress this spring and summer. It is on my trailer now in the barn, but if the weather holds up I want to get it on my shop by next weekend. Anyway here are a few pics and a link to the album I am starting:

*sigh* It's the one want I never got but always could get. An 86-90 T/A or preferably GTA. I had a 91 GTA but the body isn't the same as those 86-90's. Watching this one closely.

One of the ideas we were kicking around was a turbo'd V6, but finding a good one is tough.. maybe a turbo carbed v6 as a "Tribute" GTA turbo, or we are thinking a carbed and vortech'd 350 if we can get out of emissions testing.

Shoot.....pull a junkyard GTP motor, slap turbo kit on, call it a day. Actually, that would be a neat car. A GTP SC 3800 V6 with a Six Speed behind it. Could be a neat budget/gas friendly combo.

They're a few guys south of me that have the 3800 SC in 3rd gens, they're laying down some good numbers and still getting 30 mpg on the hwy. They call themselves the V6 mafia. LOL

Jay, I like the new project. Again, holla if you need anything.

the 87 was the last year for the low spoiler on the T/A as far as I've seen. Most of the 87 T/As I've seen with the low spoiler were LG4 305 4barrel cars. Also with the low spoiler came 15" wheels.

popo8
02-13-2013, 03:21 AM
Look close though.. the fronts are the 15s.... but I think the rears are 16s... but not the same baskets that are on the 88 that I am looking at.

jaysz2893

The spoiler is wrong in this car. It is blue underneath and I can see where the original t/a spoiler was. The wheels are wrong too. They are V6 car on the front and V8 on the back. The motor is the tpi 305 LB9. Overall that stuff is minor for me to fix or change. I'll prob clean up a lot of the wrong parts and sell them cheap to someone looking for replacements.

i think i already did. it probably got lost in the classifieds as it's been for sale since september.

http://fortmyers.craigslist.org/lee/cto/3608441243.html

it could use a paintjob but the body is pretty solid. only one rust spot on drivers rear quarter and a few dings here and there.

hah i wish it had bowling ball wheels. those are 15" fin wheels. we painted them black with the polished lip to give them the appearance of the old knight rider bowling ball wheels. bb wheels were 1982 mainly and very few 1983. if you have a good set of those wheels with caps, they fetch $1500, lol.

well we have an idea for the powerplant for this car.. swap my LT1 out of the 93 into 87 and swap a LS1 into my 93. I have found a good deal on a LS1 with trans and all the stuff and I much rather work in the Ltx in the 3rd gen body. Also i want to make my 93 more of a nice cruising car and not have to worry about the LTx issues anymore. This idea is still just an idea, but it is looking pretty reasonable.

I know to expect that response here.. LOL. but i would still have a LTX car. I dunno, is just somthing i have been kicking around for a few years. I and tired of chasing leaks and gremlins in my car. If i pull the motor (again) it will get a good rebuild this time and be much easier to work on in the 3rd gen. If I go Lsx in my 93 it is just going to be a mild H/C/I motor and reliable. It still has to pass the sniffer becasue inspection here goes on model year, not powerplant.

We can do that? LT1 cam in a TPI motor?

Thats some low miles.....

As long as it's originally a hydraulic cam. There are retrofit kits out there, but a hydraulic cam will not be a direct swap over to a flat tappet engine.

Try to find an 87 up L98. They are roller engines, the 85 will need expensive retro fit lifters.

what really wrong with a flat tappet motor anyway? It is old tech but still works. there are plenty of "go fast" parts for them still, but this is not going to be a race car.

IMHO, 1600 is to high for a non roller, iron headed L98. All you really need is a nice 350 bottom end. You can use everything on you engine you have now. 85 will be a SD tune and the 87 you have now is a MAF tune. Seems like you are going backwards.

Kinda backwards, but the motor/trans i found is complete with ECM and only 48K miles. my 305/700r4 in the car now is 214+k and i really dont feel like rebuilding them. I want to just make this a nice looking driver for my son and my wife. Also, not questiong your info, but the 85 motor I saw had a MAF on it?

I'm in by no means looking down on the 85 L98, I just don't think its worth 1600.00. It's 28 years old, only 46k miles, I bet it's been sitting alot. I bet if he tries to run it, he's going to have to rebuild it anyway. At the very least reseal it. I've dealt with alot of sitting vettes, they cost me more to run than the higher mileage cars. My 95 AB coupe had 5200 miles on it, It cost me 2k to get is back to top shape ,so I could sale it. My 95 CY has 113k, don't leak a drop of anything and has had the snot drove out of it in the last 4 months.

I'm sorry on the MAF, Vette had it, Iroc/T/A didn't.

I am going to go take a look at it this week. It is only 45 min away from work so it is no big deal. It supposedly runs. I am sure gonna check for leaks too. I may be able to negotiate a better price. From the pics i have it looks super clean. Even if I do have to reseal / regasket it, it has to be cheaper than re building a 214K mile motor and trans. I gotta figure out if it will even fit in a f-body as is. It has a serpentine setup and the accessories are in different places.

It will fit in the 3rd gen. FSTFBDY had the vette front set up on his Lt1 in his 3rd gen camaro when he was supercharged. He swapped to the fbody front set up when he went turbo.. so it worked both ways.

I know... LT1, not TPI... but I just wanted to point out it went in both ways.

well i pulled the trigger on the motor/trans combo. I got them down a bit in price too. I got the history on the car too. It was on the road untill about 2 weeks ago when it got totalled in a accident. It was a 85 vette and was in perfect shape. Guy didnt have collectors insurance so he lost the car that only had 48K miles.. this was my nightmare untill i got collectors insurance. I did the math to figure what it would take to rebuild my 305 and trans and it is goona be as much if not more to buy the L98. I am not moddinig the motor for more power casue my son and wife will be driving it most of the time. I will need to transfer a few parts and buy a cheap 2 piece RMS oil pan, but everything else should swap. As soon as my son is old enough and can buy the bird out from me he can pull the L98 and put anything he wants in it.

The L98 had good low end torque and should be a fun car to drive around on the street. It should have more than enough power to keep a kid happy for a bit. My 85 Z28 was a factory TPI 305 car and it had a MAF sensor. The later cars got the SD setup and, that is what most people switch to get away from that tiny MAF sensor. If my TPI would have been a runner I might have stuck with it, but I am happy I made the switch to the LT1.

Has the 85 been swapped to a SD set up in a past life? When I swapped the TPI from my Camaro to the K5 Jimmy that was one of the items I didn't like running on an off-road vehicle. Too much dirt, mud, debris to keep it clean/reading correctly.

16422
The red lip will be re-painted body color. Size will be 18x9.5 rear and 18x8.5 front. 285 rear tires, 255 front tires. Gonna need adapters for the front. Rear will be fine since we are swapping to a 4th gen rear..

well this may be back on trac under a different direction.. I really want him to have this rolling by his senior your in HS. My father put his projects on hold when i was 15 to help me with my 62 impala. I really need to take time off the Ultra-Z. I dont have the motivation to keep banging my head into the wall. The bird needs suspension parts, interior, wheels and tires, a rear diff, etc.. all of which are sitting on my camaro that I already paid for. If my wife can get a full time job, we go back to plan A (fix my car, resto the bird) but now Plan B is in effect. I have some cool ideas for my car someday.. I have some LTX ideas.. and yes.. some LSx ideas for it too. It all depend on my job and hers. I bought paint for the camaro last year, so now the birs is gonna be red and black, I am still going to use the L98 for ease of installation. I think the bird is gonna look killer when it is done. I will not be going anywhere from here and I will still support the group. I may just have to bring the VW or something old to local g2g's from now on.

have been working with my son here and there. This weekend (so far) we have made some good progress. K member and front suspension/steering is out. Fuel tank and lines are out. Rear bumper cover and tail lights are out. Rear suspension is out. We have started stripping the damned undercoating off. Holy hell this stuff SUCKS!! It was put on with a mop in some places and is over 1/4" in some areas. The best tools to get if off is a scraper blade on my Harbor Freiaght multi tool, and a air powered needle scaler. It is slow, but we have to get it off before i can cut out thr rust and put in patch panels. I dunn why anyone uses this crap. It makes the rust worse. Here are a few pics of our progress"

Yep Sean. We want to save this one. It has had some hack work done to it and there is only one way to do it right. I have a wrecked 85 camaro roller for the parts I need. The rust isn't horrible, but there are a few small spots. Overall it is solid and I love 3rd gen birds. We are going to make a body cart soon to get it off the lift and get the doors and hatch off.

snapped a pic tonight when out in the shop to get something. The bird has 98% of the undercoating off it now. I found 4 very small rust holes in the iner fenders. It has a little rust on the t bar and the aforementioned drivers shock tower and pass quarter will need replacing. Overall i am pretty suprised how good it really is. We have decided on a vintage air style HVAC system for it, so the firewall will be smoothed while patching the rust. We also decided to fill the gills on the fenders so they look like GTA ones. We are kicking the idea of flush '06 GTO door handles. As for the corner markers we are going to make the front ones smlaaer slits and the rears will be filled and replaced with back lit pontiac arrow heads like the 1st gen cars. Interior is still up in the air as well as wheels and tires. Suspension will be tokico lowering springs and good shocks TBD. Front brakes are 1LE 3rd gen ones. Rear is going to be either my LTx or LSx 10 bolt. Other suspensioon may be boxed stockers with poly mounts or some aftermarket.. anyway here is the pic:

yeah, had a nice 350 carbed setup and the paint was pretty fresh.. shame they covered over the blue. HAs Lowering springs, KYB's and some aftermarket suspension stuff. Was a Sport Coupe. I gonna pulle the sheetmetal i need off it as well as some wiring, steering parts, dash parts, etc.. then part out what I can salvage and scrap the rest.

Made more progress yesterday. Got the doors off, dash and HVAC out, brake booster, etc. Also made a cart to roll the body around on and free up the lift. Found a little more rust in the floor but nothing big.

The camaro is a hardtop. The whole structure is different. We thought about that, but they are not like 4th gens. Google the seal kit and the center metal trim piece and you will see how expensive this stuff is getting. I was shocked. If we make a targa top I can use the seals off the hard top and I priced out the other materials at under 300 bucks.

I'm gonna go junkyard hunting when it warms up. There are supposedly a few u pick ones near me. I know a lot of the ones I used to go to closed the yards to the pubic. I'm at a point now that I need to get the parts car parted out and get working on cleaning up mechanical stuff. The body work needs to wait a bit till it warms up and I can vent the shop. The other day while plasma cutting and welding the body cart I smoked myself out of the shop..lol. I'm formulating a system to vent the place without killing the heat or a/c.

been tearing down the 85 wrecked Camaro parts car. Got the rear out and found it is a 3.42 Posi. Going to swap it to discs and put it in the trans am. Pulled the complete front suspension in 1 piece and now need to tear it down. We then cut out the pass side quarter panel for the piece we need to replace on the t/a. We knocked the windshield out and cut the roof off in one big piece. need to pull the dash, wiring, steering, gas tank, radiator core support, front crash bar and inner fenders. We need a small piece of the drivers inner fender for the t/a. The rest of the car will be sold for parts (the sheet metal that is good), the dash, k member, brakes, etc. we also POR15 the t/a's K-member and arms. As always here are some pics:

another pictureless update, but I PROMISE some pics tomorrow. The rust repair has commenced, and good progress has been made. the worst spot was the pass side quarter. It was disected and pieced back together from parts off the car i scrapped. Have some to do in the toe board on both the pass and drivers side, and 1 small spot in the drivers side rear floor. Then we need to smooth the firewall where the HVAC was and work out what we are going to do about the t-top area. I am leaning toward using fiberglass blanket and resin to repair some of the spots that are not so bad they need to be cut out entirely. Also i scored a set of 17" ROH ZS rims that need re painting for super cheap.. picking them up tomorrow and will take pics of a lot of stuff and upadte this thread. Hopefully we will have it stripped and primed by end of the summer.

Most of the welding has been done my 16 year old son. we are using body hammers and dollies, I have a few metal working tools, but he needs to learn the hard way.. LOL thankfully most of the repair work will be covered with carpet, inner fender liners, etc.. it will be strong and last a lot longer than the bondo that was there before.

well in my ever changing saga of a life.... we need to get a car that my son can drive now for school/work. we found one but it needs a mini restoration and a good detailing. We decided to split the cost of a car with him so he has some buy-in to the car. My mom was going to give him her car, but we really want him to take some ownership in a car. Mom's car is worth too much for him to buy even half of, and is a SUV which is higher insurance. The car we found is a 99 audi a4 Quattro. It has only 81K miles. My friend got it a few years ago and drove it to work. then he decided to start fixing it up. I had some very minor body work that needed to be done. So his life got in the way and it got pushed aside. it needs paint and a shifter, plus a good detailing. It is already modded - lowered, custom wheels with new tires, audi body kit, aftermarket suspension, pes g2 blower, CAI, drilled/slotted brakes. We drove it yesterday and it runs like a top. The cost to paint and fix the minor stuff left is minimal, but the money we are giving him comes from the T/A budget.

So for now here is the plan for the T/A

finish the rest of the body work and prep and prime the car
accumulate the parts left to finish by using swap meets, ebay, CL, networking, etc to keep the cash out a low as possible
go through the parts we are not going to use and use them for cash or swap for above

This means the timeline is pushed but it does mean that my Camaro gets bumped back up. So after the Audi is fixed up, my Camaro goes under the scope for determining if that broken rocker really hurt anything. If not, the car get a good once over, prepped for paint and painted. It should mean if all goes right it will be back on the road for the next season. The Trans Am is actually a way bigger project than it started out to be. It is his car, and it will be here for him and I to complete. It isn't eating anything and it wont take up much space if we finish up some stuff as time allows. Of Course I cant bank on any of this as our life seems to be a roller coaster ride.. LOL

I have one, but it is old. The car has all the minor body work done and new mille miligila action sport 17 wheels with new tires. The clear coat on the roof is shot, and there are primer spots where my frined fixed the car. He is a paint and body guy, so the defects were driving him nuts. we are going to get the OEM color in single stage and reshoot the car. The hood is carbon fiber and needs some TLC. This was once a car sponsored by a local tuner/audio shop. It has a lot of good parts on it. I'll get more pics ASAP.

It's a 5 speed. It needs a new shifter. Apparently that is a common problem. It drives like a go kart with the Quattro. It is lower now than in the picture. The pes g2 supercharger adds 100+ hp to the motor. Typical awd dyno numbers are between 255 and 275 at the wheels. Not big numbers by today's standards, but it is fun.

Supercharger? I thought those were turbo.

The 1.8 was turbo. Pes made a Eaton roots blower for the 2.8.

yes it is. 2.8 v6 AWD, Gonna be a fun little car. It is coming home Saturday. Then the thrash begins on it. In other news my Camaro is covered in mildew. Looks like I need a de-humidifier for the shop. I took the cover off her and it was a sad site. Luckily it wiped right off with spray detailer and a microfiber towel. as soon as the audi is done, the thrash on the Camaro begins. Even if the motor makes noise that is not an exhaust leak, I am just gonna drive it till it breaks. Be easier to fix then.. LOL

Progress. Car is sanded for priming. We hung the fenders and bumpers back on for now. We pulled out the interior to clean and to make it easier to paint without having to worry about getting paint on the seats and stuff. Recovered the rear parcel deck with black headliner material and covered the a and d pillars too. We are going to recover the headliner black. Car already has a black and tan interior. Car ran good today when we pulled it out to wash off the dust. It will be done before we know it.http://tapatalk.imageshack.com/v2/14/10/05/7e93a6dcb1f36367b636f6e633b499ee.jpghttp://tapatalk.imageshack.com/v2/14/10/05/110a402c932679dcfb7336383b1f1b61.jpghttp://tapatalk.imageshack.com/v2/14/10/05/33e17bd904c5160d69dbc04881015e66.jpghttp://tapatalk.imageshack.com/v2/14/10/05/c0fead35f03c3840967ade8c5388a6f9.jpg

Almost done. Needs a few little cosmetic things and an alignment, then off to DMV for inspection and tags. Took it for a 20 mile cruise today for shakedown, no check engine or any other lights. Runs strong, gonna be a super nice first car for Brandon.

well it is done, just need to get it tagged. Going to shoot for Monday to go to DMV. I never thought I would restore a modded audi ever. While fixing it up we discovered it has H-sport front and rear sway bars, a JHM drivetrain stabilizer, bilstien shocks, eibach sportlines, full milltek stainless exhaust, an s4 steering wheel, a 3 puck aftermarket clutch and billit flywheel, an audisport short throw shifter along with the stuff we knew - VIS carbon fiber hood, PES G2 Supercharger, custom tune, CAI, RC injectors, big electric cooling fan, and the wheels. We added the euro only rear window spoiler (it covers a bad spot in the paint job), the halo projector 1 piece headlights, we kept the "rare" rear spoiler and wrapped the lip in black vynil to match the window spoiler, side mirrors, trunk handle trim, and c pillar trim, installed a JVC HU with hands free cell, kicker door and rear deck speakers and a 10" kicker powdered sub enclosure, and S4 side skirt and lower door trim painted black to match the lower bumper trim.
With only 81K miles we got a steal of a deal. Total into the car including purchase price is $4k. My son has to pay me 1/2 of the cost and he did almost all the body prep and the heavy lifting since I had to have my carpal tunnel surgery. Hopefully this gives him some sense of pride and ownership and he wont go out and wreck it.

Is he happy now?
Yes he is. A little update on the audi, the trans am, and my Camaro. ..
The audi fought me while trying to get it tagged. the readiness monitors would not set and we had to replace some parts to get it to pass DMV. As of today it is running great. We had to do a new MAF, all 4 O2 sensors, a fuel filter, and a fpr. I pulled the injectors to find one that was leaking causing a misfire and a rich a/f code. I got a set of Bosch refurbished and now the car is happy and tagged for 2 years. Also we disabled th w VVT and it makes full boost now and runs strong. It has a slight leak in the front transfer case, otherwise it is good to go. Just need new all season tires and an alignment. The nexxen tires that came with the car are summer only.
The trans am is going to sit for a while. We are going to go through the parts we have and sell the ones we don't need. We need to strip the doors, hood, hatch, and bumper covers but will wait for better weather.
My Camaro is going on the lift soon for an oil change and to check it for a possible exhaust leak. I'm going to analyze the oil at work and cut open the filter to check for metal from the broken rockers. Come spring if all is good I will get it re tagged.

Audi clutch went out. We got a few leaks to find and fix. Decided to pull out motor and trans. Just a lot easier this way to work on it. Took less than 2 hours to get it all out. Came out like a 4th gen. Going to be pulling trans tomorrow. Oh well, now we won't need all season tires for a while. Hope to be back on the road in 4 weeks.

Nice, I'm about to be pulling a VR6 out of a Jetta the same way.
It was almost exactly like pulling my 93 apart. The nicer part with the audi is the ability to swing the a/c to the side and keep the charge, and the ability to remove the whole rad core support with 8 bolts. Good luck, and go buy a good set of Allen head sockets, torx, and triple squares...

Wow... u tore like the whole front out.

Sucks about the clutch... was he beating on it?

jaysz2893
01-19-2015, 06:54 PM
The clutch was a SPEC stage 3 and worn out. The rear output shaft bearing was destroyed. The trans is out of a 97 and was replaced who knows when. It had a leak in the pass side front axle seal. I picked up a 2000 trans today off eBay. I can probably fix the one we took out and save or sell it. We weren't beating on it. My friend that rebuilds transmissions said the gears and syncros are fine. It was just neglected as the fluid was low and burnt and the clutch was way overkill. I'm going to get the flywheel resurfaced and get a more mild performance clutch. Going to need to sell something soon to cover the costs. He owes me half, so he is going to end up working all summer just to pay me back.

I'm probably going to sell the 48k mile l98/700r4 out of the 85 vette. It is complete with harness and ecm. Be a good motor/trans combo for a hot rod. Would like to get $1500 for it, obo. Thing is show car perfect.

Hopefully this is the last major thing I have to fix on this pit. He was driving to school and nailed a huge crater. It bent the front rim and cracked it. Also it blew apart the outer cv joint. So we replaced the cv shaft and the exhaust manifold gaskets while we were under there. I had no luck locating 1 rim to match. We ordered the set on the car from discount tire direct. Went with 225 / 50 / 16 instead of the 255 /45 / 17s that came with the car. More sidewall for a better ride and I hope more pot hole protection. When the weather breaks and I can get into my shop we have a few very minor finishing touches. The car needs an antenna and we got a roof mount fin one. The sunroof shade needs to be fixed and we have to finish all the jambs.
