View Full Version : When is a LT1 not an LT1
chile

So I recently started wondering when does an LT1 lose its charm. I've noticed some guys are going 24x or using standalone pcm. I've seen guys modify sbc heads to fit LT blocks. Some guys are going LTCC setup. If a LT1 didnt have an opti or fuel injection or LT heads. Is it an LT. I guess the only thing you really can't remove is the water pump. When would you consider the cut off point.

IMHO, when it looses it's opti!

When you pull it out and put something else in.

The way i see it, If it is reverse cooled. and running the LT1 water pump its a LT1.
the intake, pcm, and ignition don't make the engine. Its like when ls goes to a dizzy setup. Its still a ls even though its not running coil packs. And using a dizzy intended for a ford.
My car is going to a accel dfi as i type this. and odds are i will go to a victor intake. But will still be a LT1

I agree with Nuckin. The opti makes it.

I agree with Nuckin. The opti makes it.
So.....Would you guys be cool with a LT1 running the opti. But with a stand alone pcm?

Ive actually thought of this too. So I can run a racepak style dash.

Because Im going to this because i want better control when i go to boost. I looked into the racepack setup. But didnt want to spend the money to get it usable on street car.

I am a huge believer in the opti... Its part of why i love the ltx motor. i also love the fact that gm said... Lets flow the coolant backwards...and that will allow us more compression in a pump gas car....
I think the ribbed intake is very ltx.....
Now....i understand why people upgrade many of those things .... And i dont know that it stops the engine from being an ltx also... But do they have to stay to remain an ltx?
I dont think so... Its a sign of the times...new technology just brings the ltx up to date.
So i agree...its the block with tge magic 327 that makes it ltx
Like a person who has a sex change...if they were born with a dik then their birth certificate says MALE. Later in life if they have it snipped and turned inside out because they want things to "perform different " than the "factory" intended...that birth cert still says MALE.
I hope that makes sense...
Now with that said...would an aftermarket aluminum block "ltx" block that uses an opti and lt4 top end be an "ltx?"

It would be awesome if someone made an aluminum block or a stronger iron block

It's the block, everything else is built off of it. If you go by the opti being the only reason it's a LT1 then you could have SBC heads, intake whatever else you wanted to make work and still run the opti and call it a Lt1.

Sorry popo, if you get your zippy snipped, you're no longer a dude.

The way i see it. The block and cooling design makes it a LT1. The LT1 is based off the tried and true design of the gen1.
Due to lack of aftermarket support on induction for our motors. Proves we are a resourceful group. And make things work. Its not our fault we can adapt a whole previous generation of parts to our car. Heck GM even gave us a hole to drop a dizzy in the block.
These options=Winning :D

Imagine if we has the same aftermarket support that the LS has.
When things change you either adapt to survive or DIE.

i love my opti and plan to keep it as long as i have the car ... i think SBC heads are okay and intakes aswell ... so i guess it is the block that makes the motor an LT1
but what makes it cooler than another "block" or "platform" is the OPTISPARK.

It's interesting with the LS1 crowd because most their all out fastest cars have nothing from the factory engine albeit the cars running ERL blocks. Most are LSX/Warhawk/RHS block, Kurt Urban front mount distributors, after market heads, after market engine management, sheet metal/single plane or FAST Intakes. But then you look at modular Mustangs or the 2JZ and production cast block, production cast cylinder heads are running bottom 6s faster than the LS1 stuff. To me if it has an original block it's an LT1, but when Rick had his Formula people with LS1s would question it because it had SBC Heads and intake.
