I am swapping my 95 camaro dash for a 98 and I wanted to see if anybody knows if
the gauge cluster interchanged easily?

My understanding from reading is the ls cluster won't work on a LT car. Either need a 97 camaro cluster or a 93-97 bird cluster.

No even if I splice the wires?

I was thinking there was a reason why not, something about the gauges not working right but maybe someone with more knowledge will chime in. Side note there is one for sale on here right now.
Edit - btw this is from memory from a few months ago when I was looking for the parts I needed for my swap, so I maybe wrong.

I believe the issue is the tach. the clusters get a different signal between the 2 engines.

Sounds right. I couldn't remember for sure off the top of my head

So yall are saying even if I repin it with the 98 connector it still won't work? Cause I found both wiring diagrams to do it.
The pick is for the 95,I have 98 but can't up load it

that Im not for sure. I do know people can get the tach to work with ls engine swaps in LT cars.
so Im assuming there is a way to reverse engineer it.
ginoz28

If it works on on an lt to ls swap and and the gauge reads it, then it should be sending the same type of signal, right?

Im not sure how they do it. But i do know its not a drop in situation. with a ls cluster.

Try it and let us know as if it does work that will make it alot easier to find clusters for us lol

When I did my dash swap, I believe I used specifically a 1997 gauge cluster. I don't remember the specifics as it's been quite awhile, but I agree with what's been said so far. As I understood it, when they went to OBD2 they got more signals from the data serial wire to power the gauge cluster. But that said, it's very possible that once you finish doing the rewire that a 98+ gauge cluster might work. I had a 1997 v6 gauge cluster that I was using when my car was a v6. Then I bought a v8 gauge cluster and while I want to say it was a 1997 cluster also I have a vague memory that I might have "accidentally" bought a 98+ cluster and was surprised to see it still worked. But it's a very vague, foggy memory so I could be entirely wrong. I'd stick with a '97 cluster just to be safe.
Keep in mind, even if you go to a 1997 gauge cluster you're still going to have to repin the harness and it's pretty tedious work.

http://img.tapatalk.com/d/13/02/03/amuqe8ys.jpgI got to work on things today, I had to install all the suspension on my 98 to be able to pull it across town to my house.I got the HVAC system out of the 94 then started work getting the dash out of the 98. It was way easier getting the 98 off way less screws, but I had hell getting off the air bag from the dash. I'm gonna start the wiring tomorrow if the wife ain't nagging to much about spending time with her and the kids.

Okay guys I got the gaugecluster repined and yes it kinda sucks. Its not really the pining it was me sitting
on the floor leaning on the seal holding the connecter, pushing the clip inside with my other hand and pulling the wire out with my teeth.
But I couldn't start the car to see if all the gauges are working right because when I took out the hvac system
I have the two hoses for the heater open. I'll go to the parts store tomorrow and get the caps for the waterpump.
I also got all the dash and console in the car but I still need to rerun the wires for the foglights and the trunk release.
And if any of yall are doing this dont cut the wires that look like there going to the airbag on the left side of the glovebox because the car wont crank!

Finally got to start the car after the "hose barb incident" and got to see if the gauges are going to work and SUCCESS!!
ALL THE GAUGES WORK! Well the tach almost works, it's saying it's idling at 2k rpm and it's really idling normal at about 1k rpm. Besides the tach being a little off, all the other gauges look like there working normal. As for the "idiot lights" some of them are staying on you can see, well the lowcoolant was on before the swap and the fuel was really on empty.

The tach will read double. The LS tach uses a 4cyl signal, LT uses the usual 8cyl. I'm sure there's a resistor you can use or a box by Dakota probably.

Your problem with that is if you get a 97 cluster now you will have to re repin it back to the way it was. I saw a 97 bird cluster for sale on here recently.

The firebird cluster looks old to me. If I have to go to a 97 it will be a camaro cluster. And about having to repin it, as long as its free I don't mind.

As far as I know the 97& up camaro clusters are the same thing as the firebird clusters. Not sure if there are any visual differences but they fit exactly the same.

I think there is one difference now that I think about it. I think the 97+ has digital odometer instead of mechanical.

The 97+ firebird does have the digital. But i read somewhere few of the early 97 birds got one with a mechanical.
I picked up the 97 trans am cluster Neil350 had for sale.

I guess it's the plastic around gauges and the yellowish lettering instead of all white. I think the 93 camaros have the yellow lettering to.

The '93 Camaro gauge cluster was ugly as hell. not sure about the birds though?
Badbird_96

The camaro also lights up blue where as the bird lights up red. The camaro has tick marks where the bird doesn't. The plastic around the gauges is a 97-02 bird piece but its just the bezel and can be placed on the camaro cluster like I'm going to do. Looks much nicer with overlays than without it.

Yea I would just put an overlay on the firebird cluster. It's the yellowish orange I don't like, you don't see any newer cars with that color. Here's my work truck cluster.NICE;)http://img.tapatalk.com/d/13/02/09/7ejazygy.jpg

Sorry. Just now saw this. As long as it'll convert an 8 cyl signal to a 4, you're golden. Might check and see how the5.0 swap miata guys do it. Same concept.

Talked to a guy at dakotadigital he said the SGI-8 would work fine, So I guess I'll be ordering that pretty soon.
So that's the verdict on 98 and up gauge cluster swap as long as you repin the connector and get the tachometer interface "SGI-8" everything is good to go.
