I just got a notice today from a collection agency saying that I owe the Solano county Superior court $619.50 for a speed contest ticket I got in 1990!
Ok I was fooling around because I had just that night picked up a 67 Camaro 4speed 350 centerlines ect ect but I only got in to the throttle thru 1st and let off.
I got pulled over along with the 75 Camaro that was next to me but that guy tried to run the motor cop over so they really went after him LOL.
I did go before the judge who asked me to enlighten him as to what a drag race really was so I explained how it works at the strip and how I was NOT drag racing per say and he agreed and dismissed the ticket.
Now here it is 2013 and this happens?
I told the collection agency that not only will I not be paying them but I will be happy to go back to court and see a judge again if needed, I just hope they dont want me to prove that it was dismissed because there is no way I have anything saying it was dismissed after almost 25 years.
I cant believe that they are so broke that their digging up crap to charge people for almost 25 damed years later........................

I'm probably sure there's some kind of statute of limitations there. Or......could be a shady collections agency combing through old public records trying to make a quick buck off of someone less savvy.

This happened to a girlfriend of mines mother. She had a ticket in texas 20-25 years ago. Went to renew her dl and found out it was suspended in Illinois for that texas ticket. She sent a check ffor 100 when it was 105 $ or whateverI think that these companies buy the rights to audit n collect these types of debts

There is even a link on the courts website to these guys (GC Services) so if they are shady its with the courts blessing.

I am only about 2 miles from the courthouse that I went to back in the day (23 years ago) so its not far but I dont want them suspending my license ect so I may just have to go back.
I once had to pay for a ticket twice because they said I didnt pay even after I did.

Make contact with them at the court... And explain it from the angle of it being suspicious.... And someone trying to take advantage of u on a situation that WAS taken care of 2 decades ago.

I agree with Fastbird and Popo, it's been way too long. The court clerk should have recorded a disposition when the judge dismissed it. Problem is it's been way too long and the court might have purged that case from their records by now.

In Missouri I believe something like 10 years for the statue of limitations with one year to charge. So an officer has up to 1 year to write a summons for a traffic violation, if you don't appear in court a warrant is issued. If after 10 years the warrant still hasn't been served it's removed from the system. That's for traffic only, not criminal or felonies, and I can only speak for Missouri law.

Now that sounds logical to me but you gotta remember this is California were talking about so logic means very little to them, just look at who got reelected for governor again.

How many times have you renewed your license since then? I call BS on owing anything. The first time you would have tried to renew your license it would have given you problems.

Well as everybody know about Cali it was dismissed back in 90 but that does not mean it has gone away because the further we slide in to BK territory I am sure that this kind of thing will continue and the only reason that I am NOT having to pay for it is because it is the one and only street racing ticket I ever got and beat it in court so I remember what happened quite well.

Wow that's nuts. I used to work for Asset Acceptance, a nationwide collection agency (in the IT department) with offices in San Antonio, Tampa, Baltimore, Cleveland, Phoenix, etc. Whatever you do - don't pay a dime. A lot of collection agencies will buy really old debt for pennies on the dollar and then try to collect on the full amount. I can't remember if they're allowed to try to collect on debt that's past the statute of limitations but I do know that once you agree to pay any amount that you've "reactivated" the debt and the limitation no longer applies. Once the debt is active, they can garnish your wages or take you to court as long as they can show "ownership" if your debt ((which most collection agencies can't do... they threaten lawsuits even though if you contest ownership they'll lose))

If I had actually lost the case in court then I would have paid it back in 1990 but it got dismissed by the judge so as I told them " I wont be paying you anything" and since telling them this I havent heard anything back from them so hopefully its all good now.
I am just amazed at how this brokeass county will stop at nothing to generate revenue and yet piss it away on doing nothing to fix streets or anything else of use to the general public.

I hear you - it's amazing how many companies will do what they did to you. They're basically fishing - seeing if they can hook anyone into thinking they really owe money and then reel them in. I had a contract with 1and1.com for my website over 5 years ago and had since terminated the contract and closed my account with them. A few years later they send me a collection notice for unpaid bills since my termination date. Thankfully I had kept the dated paperwork showing the contract was terminated so I simply sent them a copy and they never bugged me again. It's really no different than these spammers on the internet that try to fool you into giving them your money - some people fall for the scams and will pay the money. That's what these collection agencies hope is that someone won't have a clear enough mind or will think they're going to get legal action taken against them so they pay up when they legally didn't have to.

let this be a lesson for the youngsters, in a situation such as this that the violation is dismissed, get it in writing with all applicable information (Judges name, ticket number, date.. ect..).
