I have a 96 TA, with CAI, longtubes and true duels. I am running cats but don't have my rear o2s running. I'm a college student and can't afford LT1 Edit and can't send my PCM in because it's my daily driver. I have an ALDL cable that I use for monitoring with laptop and was wanting to know if besides JET is there anyone one else that sells the software to tune my ECU? I don't like the $400 price tag on them both, and probably won't tune mine all but maybe 3 or 4 times.

Look into tuner C.A.T.S. last I checked its pretty cheap. The OBD2 stuff is always more expensive. Most people just swap over to an ODB1 PCM. Its pug and play. I have many ODB1 tunes if you find a ODB1 PCM to swap in PM me with your email if you want one. Good luck.

There is a whole forum deticated to tuner cats. I wouldn't run the car without a tune.

Will it not pass emissions as it is or do you want to put a tune on it and still pass?
Tuner cats has some really good customer service btw and there are tuners that will ship you a tuned ecm so you're not down while waiting for it to come back.

So you're telling me I can buy a PCM from a 95 lt1 w/ t56, unplug mine, plug the obd1 PCM in and my car will run no issue? do you have a part number for the lt1/t56 PCM?

And the knock sensor...
Although the guy at the shop that tuned mine said he can do something in the tune to make it work with the obd 2 knock sensor.
DOnt have the number for the OBD 1 computer...but if your buying from a junk yard, just ask for pre 96 LT1 computer

Is there anyone who really does good OBD2 tuning for LT1s? I'd really like to keep my OBD2 in the car so I can keep using my OBDII bluetooth scan tool with Torque Pro on my phone, but I'm gonna need to tune mine someday once I get to engine mods. Does everyone here switch to OBD I?

I'm switching straight to OBDI. Popo any idea how to flash a PCM for an auto tranny to a manual?

SUre... there are few good tuners still out there for OBD 2.... but you may have to travel...

And when I switched to OBD1... its because OBD2 just has more parameters to mess with , and when you get into high horsepower applications.... it starts to get difficult...so the swap simplifies...
Example... My car made 508, OBD2...... took it to another tuner..... he messed with it, got it up to 550 or 560...cant remember, then started experiencing tuning difficulties.... so we swapped to OBD1... and its now at 602....

You really dont need 2... when your using an auto computer in a stick car... it does not change anything... But if you try using a manual computer to operate a auto car.... it wont work....

It wont throw any weird codes or anything not have the transmission there? Thats my biggest thing.

Sweet, Moe Baily is here in Texas. At most, I'd be looking at about a 4.5 hr drive or so to get to where he is :D
Hmm, I see. Honestly I don't think my TA will ever see that kind of HP since I have to keep it emissions legal to maintain it as a DD, but my goal is for about 450 RWHP. You guys know so much more about this than me though, but is it even possible to get an LT1 to 450 RWHP on an emissions legal tune?

I need mine to be emission legal as well.. I purchased a NEW OBD1 computer, so my OBD2 vin was put in it... all the deleted equipt sensors have been turned off, so no SES light.... the only place I fail is visual for cats.

You will get codes. And in addition to that, the skip shift solenoid and reverse lock out solenoid use the same PCM cavities as 3-2 shift solenoid and TCC PWM solenoid control in a '95 auto PCM, and I believe the '96-'97 is similar. That could cause issues as well.

Really? A year ago, when I was on the dyno, still obd2 we friend my computer. I ran to the local salvage yard and Pulled the replacement computer from a 1996 Roadmaster. Put it in my car, flashed it with the last tune we had before cooking it on the dyno... and we picked up right where we left off.... no SES.

If you flash it, then no, it won't throw codes. I was under the impression he was going to swap in an auto PCM in his M6 without a flash.

I was under the impression that I could throw it in without flashing it, but if I need to that won't be a problem.

Well I plan to grab a PCM/knock sensor tomorrow. How hard is it to tune our the AIR pump? I plan to keep my EGR valve intact. Also can anyone send me the stock LT1 M6 tune?

Here is a '94, no difference for a M6 https://www.dropbox.com/s/6heevk7pk1i39jk/stock94m6.bin . No need to tune out air pump, OBD1 PCM only checks the circuit for +12v at harness end of connector to pump. As long as connector, fuse and relay are intact it thinks pump is working. This tune is set up for 3.42 rear. EGR will function normally.
By the way with Monodax now off the air you can find .bin files over here. http://www.gearhead-efi.com/Fuel-Injection/forumdisplay.php?20-GM-ECM-Bins-TunerPro-Definition-Files-Wiring-Diagrams-Tuner-Info!&order=desc . But you have to know your ECM/PCM part number 16188051 or the definition file needed $EE, for a '94-95 LT1 OBD1 . You will find the 16188051 $EE on page two in the list. It also lists PCM 16181333 which was used in the Y-Body LT1 vetts. The thread also has some other definition file $EE info.

You guys have been great, I picked up an OBD1 PCM #16202091 from a 94 z28. I thought I had 3.73 but after decoding my RPO I infact have 3.42s. What else do I need to flash this PCM? I don't understand what th definition file is for, or how in the hell I find one.
Also, just to specify, If I completely remove every bit of AIR components my ECU won't throw a code.

An OBD1 tune ( .bin file) is a block of 128K bytes of data. The definition file is a year model dependent (map) file that tells the 'Tuner' program the location and meaning of each byte in that block. W/O a definition file the 'Tuner exec" can not function. For a '94-95 F-Body tune you need a $EE definition file. It's licensed code on the TunerCat web site cost is $19.00. http://www.tunercat.com/ click 'ECM Definition Files' on left hand list of products. You may find a free copy somewhere out on the web, but since it's licensed software distribution is not allowed on most forums.
The +12 V (run air pump) in the harness connector pin to the air pump has a wire tied to it that goes back to the PCM. When the PCM activates the air pump it checks for the +12 volts on that wire. If no +12 v then it throws a DTC. Therefore you can remove the air pump and all hoses/pipes attached to it, but you have to leave the harness end connector intact (mine is tied back with tape), the air pump fuse and relay must also be present in the under hood fuse box to allow the +12 V to get to the harness connector.
By the way never heard of p/n 16202091 that must be the code or engineering level 16188051 is the PCM P/N or sometimes called service number.

Bobdec,
You are correct, 16188051. Now that I'm a good $150 deep into this I guess another $20 won't hurt to bad. Also is the def file the same for the manual/auto?

Yes same definition file for A4 and M6. Just for info a few of the very early '94's had a version "B" code loaded and require a different definition file called $EEB , so Tunercat sends out both $EE & $EEB, if you use $EE and the data fields look invalid and don't make sense then select the 'B' definition. First time I would install new PCM, key on engine off read the code and save the file as backup. Disconnect laptop start the engine and make sure it runs OK.. Offline with the laptop pull up the backup file, copy and rename it, you can then start editing (tuning) the new file , change the speedometer (rear gear/tires) using the speedometer tool, go to the switches-calibrations section and make sure Automatic Transmission does not have an 'X'. Remove 'X' for VAT's if you want to, make sure TC (traction control 'X' enable) matches your car. You can now hook cable back up and download the new tune. Make sure laptop does not EVER stop (battery/AV/etc.) during the download or you will brick the PCM. TunerCat starts fans for a second to audibly tell you when it starts and stops download, and clicks evap solenoid during the download to let you know it's running. . After downloading completes disconnect laptop and start the car to make sure all is OK. If you want to you can reattach Tunercat and w/key on engine off change the vin of the new PCM to match your car using the VIN tool. That will complete your first tune.
Don't forget to put the low resistance OBD1 Knock Sensor in. If you have to pass emission you will have to swap the ODB2 KS back and to match the OBD2 PCM unless you do the resistor mod to the OBD1 PCM. That gives you the option of using either PCM while leaving the OBD2 KS in the car. http://www.z28.com/showthread.php?141119-OBD1-Resistor-Mod

I now have everything minus my ALDL cable, which is on the way. I already de-tuned AIR/CAGS on my new tune. I'll be loading it as soon as I get my cable.
I'll let everyone know
