Not by choice but I don't want to get in to that because as some of you saw on my facebook it's not a cool situation, so a paid off and perfectly fine Sierra has to go. Looking at a new F150 with the 5.0, any one own one or know people that do? Looking at buying a Larriat.

Fuel economy drops off greatly as that engine needs to stay in boost to keep it going. Youll have no problem with it I bet but, I wouldn't say thats what the engine was built for. It was buikt for people that think a truck is a caddilac and will ride nice

Its kinda like a hybrid vs a non hybrid. Sure youll save gas but is the increased cost worth it? I'm still interested in what they become in 10 years when they are just another old truck

What about in terms of build quality Chris, how do the Fords rank? Any common model issues? Unfortunatley I have the C6 up for sale as well, going to hurt to see that car go as well.

i have a 10 Lariat with the 5.4 in it and its a great truck. buddy at work has a 2012 with the 5.0 and it can tow but the rpms are high because of the powerband of it. around town he gets like 16-17mpg but towing was around 10-11mpg. but still a good truck, he has had some problems with the radio, but i think there operator induced...

On the F150s I can't say anything bad about then really. They are nice trucks. Generally I've only seen issues with oil field trucks that get beat to high heaven with no maintenance and they expect stuff to be covered under warranty.

What exactly will you be doing with the truck? % towing % empty, etc?

I was unaware that they still sold trucks with gasoline engines...

If those are the DIC numbers, I would be verrryy doubtful of em.

Real trucks come with diesels. Weird.:D

Why not grab a 2500 with a 6.0 in it, easy to mod/fix and the 80e/LQ9 is a nice combo.

Really? I am surprised, all the guys I know report that its very misleading with your actual MPG. Maybe the fanciness of a Cadillac has something to do with it.;)

Going to be using it for a work vehicle, it may only see a trailer every once or twice in it's like like the current truck has. I just like the bed since it's useful, plus a gas 1500 gets the same fuel economy as most mid-large SUVs. I also drive on the highway between Houston and all over Louisiana, so a truck is just comfortable. I don't need a 3/4 ton so no point to spend the extra cash for one.

Not sure what the budget is or what kind of work you're doing, but for gasoline trucks I'd be buying GM. I like the older Vortec trucks and they get pretty decent mileage, and the LS series motors are also real good. I'd buy one of those before ANY Ford, but that's just me. Not sure if you'd be doing 4WD, hauling gravel, lumber, owning it for a decade, putting lots of miles on it, or what, so it's hard for me to recommend anything specific. I haul goosenecks, tractors, etc so nothing less than a diesel will do.

If you want a good truck for work with good mpg's...i love my truck, and it has a 4.8 vortech. I pretty sure you can buy a new silverado 1500 with a 4.8. I get about 17 mpg's on the highway with a 2003 with 160,000 on it. Plus the 4.8's are almost impossible to break. Not that you would try this...but hot rod magazine did a article where they twin turbo'd a stock bottom end 4.8 and did 40 dyno pulls and put out 1100hp before a lifter broke.

well i can vouch for the Lariat...it is one comfy truck. and as i said i have a 2010 with the 5.4 and on the highway i get around 17-18mpg on the highway (600+ miles per tank)

The current truck is an 08 GMC Sierra 5.3 with about 85K miles, I like the truck how ever I use it for my work vehicle and get an allowance, they changed stipulations so I can not have any truck over 5 years old or over 120 points which ever comes first. Every month is a point, every 1 thousand miles is a point. I would love to keep my current truck but it exceeds the point scale and age. Getting another used truck would kind of suck, because I am starting at a point deficit right off the bat. I wouldn't mind another Sierra/Silverado but cost wise I could get a F150 with a lot more options dollar for dollar. I found a brand new crew cab '12 Larriat, 5.0 for 31K, I need some clarification on the age point if they go by model year or service start date. Since they dropped this on us here recently and over half the vehicles we have in our office are out of compliance I am hoping they give us a couple months. How ever the paper work said by the 1st so I may need to move quickly or take a large cut if the vehicle allowance goes away. Diesel truck would be fun, but I would hate to have to ditch one after 5 years, after 5 years my Sierra has gotten really comfortable truck.

The problem with the GM products is they really havent made any changes to the trucks over the years. Stuff like the instrument cluster menus haven't changed in how long.

Engines:

The biggest news with the new trucks is in the engine bay. Three engines are available in both trucks: a 4.3-liter V-6, a 5.3-liter V-8, and a 6.2-liter V-8. Yes, the displacement numbers are the same, but all three have changed in significant ways. These all-aluminum units are what GM calls EcoTec3 engines, and all use cylinder deactivation, direct injection, and continuously variable valve timing to improve efficiency, and in the case of the last two features, improve performance.

They haven't released HP/tq numbers yet but rumor has it that the 5.3 will be around 350-360hp and the 6.2 will be near 440. Keep in mind the trucks themselves are on a serious diet and every engine is all-aluminum. Figure an easy 1-1.5mpg improvement over the previous gen.

That looks nice. What I'm saying is, theres really nothing in an 08 pickup that would be different from a 12. Obviously its not a big deal here though since we need to get a new vehicle

Ah that explains everything better. It's a totally different perspective with that situation. If you like your Sierra, the power and it's Ergonomics then stick with something similar. If you hated it, move to another brand. A good Diesel will get better mileage and make a nice used vehicle for someone else when you trade it in, but if you have no use for it, then it's hard to make a case for the higher payment/cost.

Neil350

I didn't hate the Sierra but terms of build quality I thought it was built cheap. I don't see them being as big of a value as they once were, power train power wise seems a bit dated. A diesel would be cool, I like driving them and they make cool noises, but I can't justify spending the money for one.

I'm in the same boat. I've narrowed it down to a 2008 or newer dodge 2500. It has a 6.7 and yes I planning towing or hauling very often. Its gonna be a daily driver too and the last daily I buy. It will being towing a caprice to the track, not one of those light weight f bodies.
