View Full Version : ruining the LT1 name

I hate that GM is using the LT name once again, especially on an engine that has nothing in common with our LTs. It's just an LS3 with direct port injection.

Well not to rain on your parade but the LT1 in your car isn't the first name of its kind

correct, the first LT-1 was in the early 70's and was a great motor. seems that GM uses the LT1 code for there best engines.

agree GM uses the LT name on the hardcore platforms:)
And the new LT shares nothing with the LS3 other then the wrist pins. total different block configuration and head design. the valves are reversed and. different head bolt sizes and layout. its basically a whole new motor.

Continuous active fuel management. All new fuel delivery. Crazy new piston design. It has alot things.

I thought the new LT had more in common with the LS than that. One thing is for sure, it has nothing in common with the standard small block LT1.

according to GM... the New LT1, is 90% new..... with little in common with any of its predecessors.

Huh......interesting note. Look at the years
1970 Original LT-1
then 22 years later
1992 Gen II LT1
then 22 years later
2014 Gen IV LT1
Am I crazy or is there a pattern there?

I have plans to put the new LT1 in my TA - about the time I can get one from GM or a wrecking yard my current 383 set up will probably be ready for retirement.. Before the it's a direct injection motor comments start - I'm a BMW Master Tech and have been dealing with Direct Injection on V12's since 2002, so I have a very good understanding of the requirement's to make it run and what is needed. I'm actually looking forward to doing this.

I think so as well! Hoping a supercharged version will be available when I do it, to make modifying a bit easier- I'm sure it's going to be a challenge to do it, but I love the fact that it's the LT1 Moniker!!!

Thats a decision for the coordinators of the shootout... If so...they should have their own classes... But then again...the first gen lt1s should also....ALL which i would have NO problem with...but its not my event.

I don't think it's ruining the name. Atleast they didn't put it a weak POS like they did with the Malibu name.

Hit me up on a PM - I'm assuming you have a BMW question lol?
Update to the future engine / LT1 install - I have aquired and LS K member for mock up purposes... I may drop some cash if I can get a plastic mock up engine in the near future

Uh no, not at all actually. The LT platform goes hand in hand with innovation & the new LT1 is a whole new beast. How does 'LT1' NOT suit it? And how can you be disapointed they didnt use LS? They were kinda running out of single digits to use. LS12 powah!

I am kind of in to it now after hearing the 22 year diff analogy because I was 22 when my first son came along and he was 22 when his first son came along too so the 22 year thing goes along with me for as far as I am concerned as good stuff goes and since my son is a better version of me I know Sam will be a better version of him so it sits well with me. I guess I just like the fact that LT1 will stay around for that much longer and others will come to enjoy it as much as we do now even if it comes in different flavors. In my mind when somebody says "LT1" my first thought was of the Corvette engine making 370 hp but then again I have actually driven one of these cars and at that time the 93 Z28 was not out yet so it still kind of holds the solid cam ect ect mindset to me

Kiinda cool they put the LT1 name back on a bad ass engine. Direct Injection is gonna be the next big thing to come to a lot of cars.
o quote a few sites. I find these spec's for a off the assemble line awersome..
At 74 horsepower per liter, the LT1 has greater power density than the C6 Corvette’s LS3 6.2L engine and even the C6 Z06’s racing-derived 7.0L LS7. It also produces comparable torque to the LS7 – up to 4,700 rpm – and its peak torque is within 5 lb-ft of the 7.0L engine. That torque is generated early and sustained across the rpm band, with 316 lb-ft available at only 1,000 rpm and 90 percent of peak torque available from 3,000 rpm to 5,500 rpm – giving the lightweight Corvette Stingray excellent acceleration at all speeds.
The LT1 has the highest horsepower ever in a standard Corvette.
Good read here..
http://www.hotrod.com/feature_stories/hrdp_1302_2014_chevrolet_lt1_v8_engine/
It will be just the the rest of the gm engines. Everyone put LT1's in stuff with L98's,etc.. to UPGRADE
Some LT1 people (downgraded) to LSX's..lol (ok I'll admit LSx's do make great power and is a killer design also)
The New hot motor swap will be the new LT1 also. Just a matter of time. (like the LSx swaps)
To answer the question to if we'll be having a GEN V LT1 class at the Shootout.. the answer is yes. We plan on integrating the GEN V's into their own classes. If not this shootout, then definitely the next! Can't wait to see what kinda numbers these motors throw out there.

Last I heard, direct injection presents several safety concerns & as such, GM is adding extra security to the PCMs making them harder to access & tune. If that's the case, this LT1 may be nothing more than a novelty.
Another thing that helped the LS1 is that LSx engines started popping up in everything. They're readily available in every junkyard in the country. If This LT1 is just for the performance crowd... it may not last as long as our LT1

They were implementing an "uncrackable" PCM, but it's already been hacked. The LT1 is available in the trucks, and the 5th generation v8s will be implemented in every v8 application.

That's good to hear. Haven't heard much about them since they came out.

If I could get my hands on one I might. This car is getting a new heart one way or another this winter. The thing is I can reuse my T56 with an LS1. I doubt I can with the Gen3 LT1
