FWIW, I'm happy with my Moser 12 Bolt.

I bought a S60 since it fits the best has the least gear whine can handle anything you throw at it and supposedly is the more efficient than a 9" supossing they have the same size axles etc.

The S60 can take more abuse, less drivetrain loss (still up for debate), but it's heavier. And IIRC, the 9" has no ABS.

Think about it like this.............Ford obviously makes the 9 inch rear end and put them in their trucks for years and years and years. They were installed into their F150's and a lot of F250's. As soon as you stepped up to the Super Duty line up of Ford trucks, the F250HD's and F350's you got a Dana rear end from the factory.
Now why would Ford do that?
I'm sure there are certain years where this wasn't the case but for a VERY long time this is how it was done at Ford.

It seems that the S60 is a stronger year. The 9" would probably handle the 500 hp, but why not just go straight to the biggest upgrade available. They cost about the same and you only have to upgrade once.

Strength is not an issue between both of them. Equally equiped, (same spline axles and carrier) The 9" can take just as much abuse as the S60.
LOL, at the 9" probably bieng able to handle 500rwhp. Take a look under most 6 and 7 second pro and outlaw cars and you will find a 9"
The rear bieng set up to fit and work in the car without any drivability issues is the major factor. Many have had problens with getting the pinion angle right and have dealt with drivetrain vibrations with the 9".

The 9" rear has a HUGE advantage in that it has been around in drag racing for many more years. There are WAY more vendors who specialize in it, and have parts for it.
You see it under many drag cars, especially the Pro level cars simply because of the fact that they can swap out gear ratios much faster with them. My great uncle races all over the place and has several different ratios for 1/8 mile tracks and 1/4 mile tracks. This would be very cumbersome for him to do with a conventional rear end.
You really can't go wrong with either choice but the way I see it, for an F-bod, the Dana60 is the best choice.

why is that? from the small amount i have read, the S60 kinda lines up and bolts in easier...?

It does so unless you have a fully adjustable rear suspension already. The 9" might require those item as well.

No.
I can't see how manufacturers can even justify selling a 12-bolt for the same price as the OBVIOUSLY superior 9-inch and S60 rears. If the 12-bolt was say.......$1400 or something along those lines, I could totally understand, but not $2K+

X2 no reason to get a 12bolt since you can get a better rear for the same$$$$$;)

The S60 did not exist when I bought my 12 bolt. My car is not a race car I choose to keep GM parts on my car and I wanted to keep my ABS so that swayed me toward the 12 bolt from Moser. I like it. Hasn't let me down yet. No gear whine as all. Works flawlessly.
Just my $.02.

You'll find that true with a lot of cars that have the 12-bolt in them. There simply was no other option 4+ years ago, so that is the direction they went. I never said it was junk or anything, it is quite good actually, but it is the same price as stuff that is superior in every way (except weight, lol).

X2, Both rear will handle 500RWHP without an issue, both MAY require some additional modifications it depends on what manufacturer you go with. S60 or 9" your not gonna go wrong either way! If your shopping I'd just look for who ever can give you a better price with the options you want, setup correctly stregenth in these rears will not be an issue in almost all of our cars. Depending on manufacturer all options are available on both rears, ABS included.:D

Me and a friend installed my S60 in about an hour and a half, and we are talking some seriously barnicled(rusted) bolts on the rear of my car. My car has been through 8 Buffalo/Rochester NY winters, so the 10-bolt looked like something you'd see on the Titanic. I don't see where there would have to be any modifications to put it in. It is a true bolt-on. The only thing required is either a shortened stock driveshaft (dumb idea) or a new driveshaft (good idea).

does the drive shaft length change with the S60 or 9''?
AChotrod

Yes with the S60 its shorter but you can just order it with the rear or cut down your stocker. Also I lost about 3% rwhp over the stock 10bolt with my S60 with 35 spline axels and a true track. Not bad at all + its bullet proof!!

I think with the S-60 your driveshaft is a little less in lenth, and with the 9" you have a differant yoke.
