I dont know how many out there use aftermarket GPS devices but I use a Tomtom go730 and wanted a better car icon such as my own car as an icon and found out how to do this and thought I would share, I am not sure if this will work for other units since it is written for Tomtom units.
I got this info from Ehow so as to give credit where it is due ect.

Instructions

1

Open up your image editing software. This can be as simple as Microsoft Paint or as complex as Adobe Photoshop.

2

Open your image inside the software. This is usually done by clicking on the "File" menu, selecting "Open," browsing for your file, selecting it with your mouse, and clicking the "Open" button.

3

Outline the car using a selection tool. These usually come in either a rectangle, circle, or free-form selection type. Once this is done, white out the background of the image. You can either paint it white or erase it.

4

Resize the image to 80 x 80 pixels. In Microsoft Paint, this is done by clicking on the "Resize" button. Select "Pixels" and uncheck "Maintain aspect ratio." Then type 80 into the Horizontal box and 80 into the Vertical box. Click "OK."

5

Fill in the white image background with red. Find the color scheme section and open the window that allows you to manually pick a color. There will usually be spot to enter numbers into Red, Green, and Blue. Enter 255 into the Red box. This should turn the color red. Select this color. Now click on the "Fill with color" button. It looks like a paint bucket being dumped out. Move your cursor over a white area and click. This should fill it with red. Do this for all the white background area.

6

Go to "File" and click "Save as." Next to "save as type" select BMP and hit "Save."

7

Connect your Tom Tom to your computer. Your device should have come with a cable that will allow you to do this. Consult your owner's manual for help.

8

Find the Tom Tom SD card folder. If it's properly connected, you should see your Tom Tom in your "My Computer" folder. Double click it to open.

9

Add your newly made car icon to your Tom Tom. First find a folder named "Art" and open it. Then find a folder named "Cars" and open it. Find the newly created car .bmp file on your computer. Copy it and paste it in this "Cars" folder. Unplugged your Tom Tom from your computer.

10

Load your new icon. Go the main menu and tap "Change Preferences" to open it. Then tap the option to "Change Car Symbol". Scroll through the premade symbols until you find your car ion and select it.

Yes it does and in its little stand it fits well and is not easy to see from the outside of the car, one less reason for a scumbag to break in to it.

Def a great idea, and something we stress to residents all the time... no one ever listens... but glad to see you keep it protected.

Very true but unfortunately most people do not think proactively until they are a victim of a crime, I am a suspicious bastard so its second nature for me
to be on the lookout.
