hey guys a few weeks back i came across a great deal on a 93 formula for 1600 it has 158,000 miles and is completely stock besides a msd distributor, air foil and a k&n air filter it had some small issues but slowly i have been knocking down the list but this is the problem at first when i got the car the a/c compressor clutch was completely gone and the owner didn't want to mess with it due to having other project cars he also told me on very hot days the car over a long period of time starts get get a lil hot so i replaced the a/c compressor and both fans kick on like they should and everything should be ok right??? well the other morning i was sitting in my front yard letting the idle and checking some other stuff out (a/c was off at the time) and it was trying to overheat i also didn't hear the primary fan come on i quickly turn it off before it got to hot so here is my question???

why would the primary and secondary turn on when the a/c system is on but the primary fan will not turn at all or it turns on when the engine temp is so dang high that it start to overheat before it comes???

is there a seperate relay that turns the primary fan on from when the a/c is engaged???

since its a 93 is there anyway to have a custom tune made so the fans come on at a lower temp???

any advise would go a very long way and would be a great help thx

The fans turn on when you turn the a/c on regardless of the temp. Try changing the temp sensor on the front of the water pump. Thats the sensor in charge of telling the when to turn on and off when the a/c isnt on. Cant say for sure thats the problem buts its a cheap and easy place to start.

^this. If you want to test the sensor, with the engine warm remove the connector and measure the resistance (ohms) across the 2 pins on the sensor. At 180 it should be around 300 ohms. On a cold engine it can be as high as 2000 ohms.

Electric cooling fans attached to the radiator keep the LT1 from overheating when there is little or no air passing through the radiator core (car going very slow or stopped and engine running). It is normal for the temps on the gauge to go up to the middle or past middle of the gauge before the fans kick on. The middle of the gauge is in the range of 210º - 220º. With factory programming, the PCM will command low speed fans (or primary fan) "ON" at 226º and "OFF" at 221º and high speed fans (or secondary fan) "ON" at 235º and "OFF" at 230º. The fans should come on before it gets to any part of the red zone. (see "dual fan configuration" below about primary and secondary fans)
The f-body LT1 uses a 180° thermostat as stock. Crusing temps are generally 10°-20° higher than the thermostat rating.

With that being said. I have a stock 96 camaro, I have seen it get quite high to where people would think the car is overheating and I have even seen people pull the whole car apart over it. I wouldnt worry about it. The temp gauge can get up there pretty good on stock fan programming. This is per design intent and should not be worried about

dang man thats high as heck i was just outside and tried it and i waited as long as i could and it almost reached the red then i turn the a/c on and it went back down below 210??? then i walked over to the t/a's and with the a/c's off on both cars their fans kicked on around 210 and some change right now i just don't know

Same thing with my car. Make sure there is no air in the system and let it go. I wouldnt loose any sleep at night over it. Depending on the relay configuration you can go ahead and ensure circuit integrity any all that fun stuff for peace of mind if you would like. That is all on Robs lt1 site I posted. Its also in my sig as well. I have all the factory manuals after owning my 4th fbody now and he does a very good job of quick reference

Another thing to consider is the gauge on the dash may not be accurate. Most of the ones I've seen are about 10-20 degrees off. Couple this with the high factory settings and I would agree that what you are seeing is probably normal. If your ect sensor checks out, let it ride.

hey guys some great news the car is fixed i went ahead and went to the deal and purchased the engine coolant temp sensor and temp gauge sensor and it turns out it works i also noticed what you were talking about chris the car started to gradually climb just past 210-220 with the a/c off and then the primary kicked in and brought it down a lil bit below 210 the seems to be running great i really appreciate the great advise the only thing i really would like to do is to find someone who will touch a 93 i would really like to have the fans set to 160 everyone i ask look at me a bit sideways but oh well i love this car thx again:)
