Has anyone messed with the edge tuner programmer for the 06 Cummins with the common rail setup? My girl apparently has one and she wants her baby to roll more coal if you have any insight on it please pm me.

i have a edge cts setup on my 05. you would need to adjust the smoke limit up. personally i would not advise doing it. black smoke is poor afr. it also dumps excessive soot past the rings. if you do decide to do it. make sure you step your oil change interval.

This, and as far as I know the regular tuners (Edge, Bullydog) dont have options for this for that reason... You would need to go with some type of 6 position chip or something from a custom tuner to get the "excessive smoke" tune... But, as stated above, lots of black smoke from a diesel ='s a bit more care for the whole "it being an indicator of bad AFR/excessive unburnt fuel/excessive fuel being dumped".

Yea I know about the excess black smoke I am a diesel technology student...she rolls a bit of coal now but that rev limiter is the only thing that is hurting the performance portion...considering it hits at 3k and I can't even drive normal with it so low.

Can't drive normal? I never see 2k unless I'm on the free way, I usually shift between 1600 and 1800. It's completely unnecessary to run a diesel out past 2k in "normal driving". The only reason I ever shift above 2k is when I'm pulling my trailer and I have to keep the engine in the powerband. It sounds to me like you are expecting a diesel to rev that same way a gas motor does. 3k to 3200 is the normal rev limit for any diesel pick up. The guys that are running higher than that are running on borrowed time unless they have specifically built the short block to take that kind of stress.
Also on the whole wanting to "Roll coal" bit, that is enourmously stressful on your motor, and if you are not really, really careful, can be a very good way to melt pistons and cause other expensive engine damage. Some guys get away with it, others don't. Do you really want to be shelling out a few thousand dollars over something that was easily preventable in the first place? Just a quick glance on ebay, and you're looking at a minimum of 2000 dollars for a usable shortblock, more if you need the whole motor. That doesn't include the time or labor (depending on whether you do the engine swap yourself or not or how long you can afford to have the truck down.) If you were to get a remanned motor, you'd be looking between the 6k and 10k range.
All that black smoke is basically unburned fuel, so not only are you pissing everyone off, you are also wasting quite a bit of money if you do that on a regular basis.
That being said, the suggestions put forth by the other two posters are pretty much spot on. My only warning to you is to look into how expensive replacement parts are and then decide if you have the spare cash laying around in case you do mess something up by "rolling coal"
Don't mean to be rude or hateful, but it irks me to see people unnessesarily abusing vehicles that already have a bad rep with John Q. Public for being "dirty ole' diesels". I just want to make sure you have the facts, as it sounds like you may not have that wide of a knowledge base regarding diesels. I do not claim to be an expert, but I would rather have my motor in one piece rather than slag metal because I did something that seemed cool at the time.

I don't normally have to use anything past 1800. When I'm pulling, it's different, usually try to shift around 2600 or so, seems to be the sweet spot for my truck.
I drive an 01 5.9 cummins 6pd manual dually.

Ive lost a small amount of power becuase my truck needs injectors.... The useable power below 2k used to be immense even for an old outdated old design 7.3L... Now I see 2.2k and slightly higher getting on the highway, so she is digging for a little more because of what it lost. It definitely is time for some injectors, at 150k... I got my moneys worth out of these. Almost positive I got a leaking/stuck/weak one somewhere.. Smokes a little more than it did before, and the idle is a "little" bumpier than before (not something anyone else would notice, but Ive driven it for 6 years and I notice EVERY little damn thing that changes).

haha, alright then. Just make sure she understands that she's paying for the motor when she blows it up lol. Any of my previous girlfriends before my wife would have been out on a limb if they did something they were warned not to do.
As I said before, it very much irks me when I hear about people wanting to sully the already horrible (and undeserved) reputation of diesels as dirty and inefficient when they are (at least in my opinion) the best motors out there for light duty trucks, or any vehicle for that matter. TDI jetta's get 40-50 mpg, and if I could have found one in our price range, that's what my wife would be driving right now. No tricks, no gimmicks, no green peace hippy bullshit toxic batteries, just straight, good ole efficiency at work.
I dare you to find a near stock gas dually that will see over 20 mpg running around town and a little highway mixed in (I've got about 30 miles of highway every day to and from school) that hasn't been heavily modified lol. At this point you couldn't give me a gas powered pickup.

You win. Had a guy down the road my dad had done some work for on the side. He fixes wrecked and flood cars. The truck wouldn't start and dad asked what he wanted for.it. Dude had two identical trailblazers one was a water truck with a perfect body, the other a rollover with perfect interior and drivetrain. He told dad if he swapped the bodies out and put the rollover stuff in the good body he could have the truck. Used the lift took us two days to complete the swap (note that's after school and he got off work). Turns out the truck had a bad injector pump. $1200 later he had a super clean less than 100k mile Cummings.

My 02 has the Edge Juice with Attitude... I keep on it level 1 to prevent smoke until I increase the air intake down the road... But I believe there is some kind of kit out there that you can manually turn the smoke show on and off from inside the cab. I don't know anything about it other than it exists, since I have no interest in wasting fuel, but she may want to look into that for her trucks sake instead of even taking the risk of damaging anything.

For dmax's you can fool the MAP or some sensor and flick on smoke show.
By far the most retarded thing you can do to a truck. If its some twin/triple setup and pushing a shit ton of boost and rolls coal spooling up at the line, sure smoke away, but half the idiots belching black smoke have a tuner and some exhaust, and its "fast"

Like I said, you can get different tunes with the 6 position chips out there.... Change on the fly, and they have "smoke show" tunes along with 80hp-100hp and economy/towing tunes... I only know people who do the tunes for 6.0L/7.3L powerstrokes (Power Hungry Performance/Swamps/DP Tuner ect.... usually uses the TS performance 6 position switchable chip with tunes from different tuners loaded on the chip itself)... You would have to do some research on who does them for Chevy/Dodge.

You're lucky I have more respect for this site and it's members than I do for people on facebook. If I saw a comment like that on my wall, it would become a personal mission to irritate the piss out of whoever made it. No one forced you to look at this thread, let alone post in it. If it bothers you so much, then why come into the threads about diesels at all if all your going to do is compare us to the trolls on LS1tech? Not one person here has said that gas trucks were junk, simply that we like our diesels better. If you can't deal with that in a thread about diesel trucks, no skin off my nose.
That fine If that how you feel. I personally don't care what other think of me.
I don't care what you think of me either bud. Between you and me, I had a lot of respect for you for having an intelligent, thought out reason why you believe gas is better for your situation than diesel. And I happen to agree with you, if you'll remember, that diesel isn't right for every situation. Most of the people driving diesel trucks out there have no business with them. It seems that some of that respect may have been misplaced since it seems your problem seems to go beyond just the fanboy stuff. You like your gas powered truck better than a diesel, it suits your needs better, we get it. That doesn't warrant such a malicious and low comparison the the idiots over on trolLS1tech who, for the most part, are so short sighted they can't see beyond the end of their nose.
I would have thought that my use of smilies would have conveyed a lighter aire to my comments, but it seems, once again, the nuances of human speech are lost on the text based world of the interwebz.

I like reading these threads because I like to see what other do to there cars. I have said it once I will say it a THOUSAND TIMES I have no problems with diesels I actually like them they are cool and have there place. I like to learn and see what others do and learn from them. I was interested in learning about rolling coal and seeing how you diesels do it. Personally its not my thing I wouldn't do it but it still interesting to see. I actually learned some stuff to because I didn't realize how bad that was for one. I dont like all the fanboy crap that people sidetrack into.
Dont put words in my mouth 94black bird. I have never claimed to like gas better then diesel nor have I claimed I like diesel better then gas. I have always said each has its place. Your the one that has gone all fanboy on the diesel vehicles in other threads as well in the past I have never said I am for or against one. Don't put words in my mouth because I called you out. Sometimes the truth hurts.
I will say it one last times I have nothing Against diesels I don't chose one over the other. When I buy A vehicle I don't go OMG is it diesel or gas. I look at the vehicle I look at what my needs are. I then look at the purchase price and cost of ownership over the time I own the vehicle. If the diesel comes out top then I buy it. If the gas engine does then I buy that. Its as simple as that with me.

Wow thinking you were joking I did as well. This turned into a YouTube video. I hate x then why watch videos about it. If I didn't alot of hauling I would be a gas burner if I'm going to do alot of hauling I would look at anything but a diesel. With as many trucks as we have owned and the amount of hauling it pays to have the power and the ass to keep that trailer where it needs to be.

Dude, I'm not having this discussion again. If you'll recall, I agree with you about gas and diesel have their place. I have made my decision, you made yours. I will state, however, that this IS a thread about diesels, so there WILL be diesel fanboying in it.
I did NOT buy my truck simply because it's a diesel. I bought my truck because I like the way diesels pull better than I like the way a gasser pulls. My fuel mileage is also significantly higher than the average diesel owners, in part because I don't try to smoke everyone out and in part because I got luck and got the factory mileage freak. At current fuel prices, 20-22 mpg mixed driving that I do doesn't phase me one bit at the pump. When I moved, I probably could have seen better than the 13mpg I saw with my enclosed trailer if I had gone a little slower. As it was, even through the mountains, I still averaged about 65 mph. Will I admit that I had to slow down through said mountains, sure. Every truck pulls different. Some go a little faster, some a little slower.
I've said my piece. It can't be helped if you feel sufficiently offended to post a complaint IN A DIESEL THREAD about fanboying. You know from past conversations that I have legitimate reasons for my choices other than "OMFG, ITS A DIESEL!". If my enthusiasm for my chosen platform puts you off, then so be it. It's not unlike the enthusiasm I have for the LTx platform. It's not going to stop me from displaying it. Especially in a thread specifically about diesels.

What others buy is not the point of my contention. How I buy my vehicles strictly applies to how I do things not how others should. It was never about what you guys drive. Its about how some of you guys cant wait to get into a discussion where you have to take a shot at other peoples ride with stupid bogus irrelevant crap
perfect example I am not going to go into an argument how this is just a stupid augment because I have made that point before. But every time he gets a chance to bash gas trucks he takes a shot at them every time whether the information is pertinent to the argument or not. That is no different the the crap on ls1 tech where the guys take shots at lt1s or people parts plan and simple.

I agree. plus 94blackbird was just expressing his opinion about how he feels about it all. I take it as a sarcasm response and I wouldn't get too bent out of shape cause it's an opinion about it all. so don't take someone's opinion on something so serious. :)

Why do most diesel owners sound like people who own an ls1 on ls1tech?
If this is the direction the board is heading in then please feel free to attack me and ban me from the place because I don't want any part of what goes on over there.
i don't have a problem with people calling it like they see it. but the first post you made was taking a shot at people. if you have a axe to grind with some one send a pm and stop being a hypocrite.
