View Full Version : Intake Manifold bolt Length Question

Cause I really don't know the answer. If I get a new set of manifold bolts (don't ask) since I've got to pop the manifold off again (fucking rear permatex seal, my first ever failure), I know the stock bolts are in the length area of like 1.38" or something like that. Would a 1.5" bolt all the way around be too long to actually fit in the outer holes where the bolt hole isn't pass through in the head? I've got some long ones in the center holes on the heads right now, but the ones that are on the car right now I'm NOT putting back on..........
Or better question, how long of a bolt can I use at the LONGEST in any hole......and I'll get a set of that specific length.

Hmm not sure. Wait why do you need new manifold bolts?

Cause the ones that were used during assembly were 1.00" SBC bolts and I've got three bolt holes in the heads now with partially ripped out threads. As I was putting it back together I was like WTF is going on?!?!?! When I got into my old bolt stash and pulled out the manifold bolts I was all like "Oh my fucking god are you kidding me?" So I'm just getting the proper length hardware in there and hoping to not have more issues when it goes back on. I already know that one of the middle "can do without" holes is buggered and will likely end up costing me a 90* drill and 3/8x16 helicoil kit at some point.
And I've got to say that it's HARD to find a decent polished stainless flange bolt. I don't want to dork with washers, I want a solid 1.5" underhead length flange bolt in polished stainless. Doesn't seem to be happening.

Nope. The bolt kit is 1 or 1.25" long. Not taking that chance. I just ordered 3 sets of these: http://www.summitracing.com/parts/ARP-623-1500/ But I had $20 summit bucks so it's all good. Also ordered some new BR7EF NGK plugs, the LT4 Race gaskets, copper coat, and a solenoid cause I sold a line lock kit for a C5 today and that's how I'm paying for the rest of this crap.

If you know the length and pitch you need, go look up the bolts you want from McMaster Car. I buy stuff from them all the time and their selection is awesome. Sometimes I would order at 8am over the phone and my stuff would be waiting for me when I got home.

Speaking of which I gotta get one of those myself one day when my car grows up. Are those bolts what you wanted or are you having to use a washer? Couldn't tell in the pic it pulled up

I'm hoping the flange is wide enough to use without the washer, but if I have to use it I will. I'll explore around on McMaster-Carr. I want a nice shiny flange bolt in stainless, lol.

Look much better without using the washer. Have you thought about Allen head bolts? Dunno where my dad got them but he used Allen head bolts on the 69 I posted in the dream fbody thread and it looked very clean.

Well, got the ARP bolts in with my delivery yesterday. The flange heads on them are not very wide so I don't think I can use them without the washers, but they are nice and shiny!!!!! They're going to look great once on the car. I only pray now that the threads in the heads aren't too buggered. I know I've got one that's going to be trouble already. Hoping for no more.

Not a fan. Too many stripped out allen head bolts in my lifetime. They look awesome, but I just don't trust them.

Well, I've got one bolt hole that's fucked, see the "BOOOOOOOOOOooo" thread.
For an FYI for folks, the 1.5" bolts are great except for ONE spot..........the four corner holes. Those aren't pass through on my TFS heads at least, and as such, I bottom out. I KNOW a 1 1/4" would fit, and a 1 3/8" might be enough too.
I'm having to use the washers, but I think it's gonna work out fine. Getting ready to go back together after about an hours worth of work.

Well.......I have 8 bolts in, all but the corners. Hand snugged to let the Ultra Black set up for a while. I'm thinking of just trying to grab some 1/8" stand offs to use under the ARP bolts I got to do the corners with as that won't interfere with anything. But the good news is that even on the bitched up bolt hole, it grabbed and snugged. So I'm only going to hand snug that one after all the rest are properly torqued.
Gotta mod a new TB gasket as the old one finally gave it up. But I'm on track to drive the car tomorrow at least.
