A few months back I caught wind that a friend was selling off his 1993 Trans Am since it blew a headgasket and a few people wanted to part it out..... I just could NOT let this happen! So I made a few calls and had the car delivered to my friends house..... Big thanks to Mike and Kelly. I am now in the prosess of selling parts that I will not be using.
This car does not look too bad. have to replace the passenger door since the ramair mod is not working for me....
http://i104.photobucket.com/albums/m173/rudy_028/2012-02-04_12-26-11_12.jpg

I have a few choices with this build:
keep it speed density or convert to a COMPLETE '97 harness front to back i have everything and i will be taking this car completely apart gotta be repainted anyway......

This Trans Am will be converted to a T56 that i picked up from a member here, thanks Chris J great guy. The clutch has not arrived yet but i chose the Competition clutch stage4
http://i104.photobucket.com/albums/m173/rudy_028/IMG_20120528_204546.jpg

The rear end is not finished however, it is another 8.8 w/3.73s, 31-spline moser axles,Aluminum cover/girdle Ls1 rear brakes everything to be painted.

Front brakes are Ls1 everything, stainless brake lines. gotta paint the spindles, calipers and all brackets

Suspension consists of Eibach pro kit, looking at shock options at this time but stock decarbons are on there now. Eibach hollow sway bar, energy suspension bushings and end links.

Will be purchasing these parts in time:
Custom braided fuel lines w/fittings
Ws6 hood
Lower control arms
Torque arm relocating mount
Torque arm adjustable
Relocation brackets
Strongly debating a road race tubular K member...This is a driver i want durability

Not going to spend a butt-load of money rebuilding this car but she will be back in nice condition when finished...I will update as i am able to... As for the powerplant i have a few ideas but NOT ready to discuss at this point but i will say it should be fun.....

Awesome man... Ive been wondering what the deal was for a while. So the pic with the SS wheels on it, is that how you have it, or the wheels with the "ram air" mod....?

96lt1m6
07-13-2012, 03:26 PM
my friend had already sold the wheels off the bird and i tracked down the buyer and bought them back.... vicious cycle these days.. The TA currently sits on the SS wheels. If you look in the smaller pic you will see the passenger door has damage to it aka the ramair mod... I am sure i can repair it however i picked up a complete door instead.

I really like that car. Is it the same color as FASTBIRD's?

96lt1m6

Thanks Larry, yes it is the same original PURPLE PEARL METALLIC as delivered in 93 and 94 hoping to get it repainted to exact specs.....

Ok it is apparent I have to build a new Lt1 for this wounded bird! Lets see some realistic engine build ideas, remember this will be a driver, lots of driving cruising highways, hitting the curves and both 1/4 mile and Autocrossing so lets see what you guys are thinking. I will have Nitrous on this car as I do on all my F body cars;) damn I just told on myself!!
Just please remember this is not a drag only build and the budget will have forged pistons and ported heads included.......

Ok back to Purple Haze..... I hit the local salvage yard today and came up on a set of Ls1 brakes and that is where the day stopped. Started with the spindles.

I decided to go with silver on the spindles for some strange reason hope it looks good on the car.

Ok small update, So I picked up an Lt1 shortblock from a friend so it looks like I am back on track now........
http://img.tapatalk.com/d/12/09/21/4egajyqy.jpg

PM Rods, pistons are in really good shape, however the crank has excessive wear on #1,356 it can be turned possibly polished I will not be using them in this build though....
http://img.tapatalk.com/d/12/09/21/9umypuru.jpg
http://img.tapatalk.com/d/12/09/21/rapena4e.jpg

I was crunching numbers and it is quite tempting to do a FI set up on this build but I have to let go of that idea! So heads, cam, cubic inches is where this TA is headed. More to add later
Crank
Rods
Pistons
Machine work
Ported heads
Ported intake

Its been a while but I managed to get my hands on black interior plastics, need black seat belts now....... next up will be an ebony dash.
The interior will be completely disassembled since I am converting the car from 93 speed density to 97 OBDII.
After that is done I will remove the old drivetrain have the shell repainted the original PPM and part of me wants the 94 anniversary stripe.
Then reinstall the new suspension front and rear along with my 8.8 rear end.

So, I pulled about 70% of the interior out of the TA today, I had limited time to work on it:( Atleast when I go to swap the harness over from 93 SD to 96/97 OBDII it will be easier. The car actually got a small amount of sunlight..

Did you find ebony seat belts?

I had a similar issue finding them. And didnt want to spend 150.00 just to use the fronts. So i dyed my belts with VHT dye. And they came out real nice.

Wow that did come out nice, usually i'm not a fan of dying interior parts cuz i've seen how it looks after a few years. I'm sure the seatbelts would be fine though.
Cool project OP, I love the PPM on Maros or Birds. Someday I really want to find a parts car so I can swap out my Speed Density stuff.

the VHT stuff is awesome. Its nowhere like the old stuff. Got a friend the did his whole interior 2 years ago in his DD. And it all looks perfect still. I can't scrape this stuff off.

After kicking around the weird idea of an automatic trans I decided to do it. Since the TA will be using the 24x system I am going to use a 4L80e yeah I know stick shift guys don't switch to automatics:( I came up on the 4L80e by luck and traded for my 700r4 straight across....... the bad part is now I have to get a converter for it..
Circle D

Revmaxx
Wont buying one for a while cause I have an outstanding debt that has to be paid before I play...
I don't feel I will give up too much by going auto, possibly just the added weight.

The factory pistons are made by Mahle they are hyperutectic however they are lightweight. This is what helps the Lt1 rev the way it does.

My 97 lt1 pistons seemed heavy to me if you flipped them over they had heavy metal weights on the bottom I should have taken a picture but there gone now they were original they came out of my firehawk at 24,000 miles

Moser axles 31-spline
Auburn Pro 31-spline
PG 3.73 gears
TA girdle
8.8 rear end housing, welded tubes... still need to paint. I should have this rear done next week sometime..

Nice on the ebony score, you can have your stock glove box re wrapped to match the ebony. That's what I did on mine so I could keep the VIN/RPO sticker. You can also mod that cluster and lens bezel to work on your 93 gauge cluster.
