View Full Version : Sonofa....I think my stereo died......

I found out when I dyno'd my car that my stereo wasn't working. I had cut some wiring that was for my front speakers. Thinking that's all the issue was, I went back to the unmolested factory wiring. And I get nothing. I can turn the volume all the way up, and I get a crackle every now and then throughout the system, but no sound other than that. And the face of the stereo is acting like all is well and reacting to the sound it's picking up. Which SUCKS. My beloved Alpine CDA-7894 that I'd had since 2002 apparently has apparently decided to call it quits on me. I've got one last ditch thing to try and that's a direct connection to a small speaker at the stereo harness itself to rule out wiring, but I'm quite sure at this point it's going to be a no-go. And I am bummed.

Well, I've got to rip it all out and check one speaker at a time. Apparently if a single speaker has a bad connection it will default the amp to safe mode, I.E. no workie. Given that I have components with crossovers in the doors and rear hatch panels and then speakers in the sails too, this could easily be the culprit. Good thing the cars down right now.
This is one of those top notch Alpine head units from the early 00's with the V-Drive internal amps, reportedly some of the best ever internal amps offered in a head unit. I REALLY don't want to think it died.

Saweet!!! Boss had an extra speaker laying around, so I borrowed it home and bench tested my head unit with my charger. All four channels are working, meaning I've got a wiring issue somewhere that's causing the internal amp to go into default safe (I.E. OFF) mode. I didn't think my 10 amp charger would have enough juice to power the sucker but it popped right on. I'm stoked! Now time for a nice HU Mount and some cleaner wiring while I wait for my manifold to get done.

And my HUMount setup was just ordered. Wanted one of these for years. Got a pic to post in a minute too.....

I think this is the cleanest adapter I've ever done. Left the long ones intentionally due to potential use (yellow one is direct to battery cause it's a v-drive alpine amp in the head unit, it requires it).

Well, that sucks. Apparently I've got either a shorted speaker, the factory subwoofer amp bit it, or a crossover that's fried. I try to use the stereo in the car and the internal amp immediately goes to safe mode and shuts off. Where to begin...........I'm kind of thinking the factory amp bit it. Reason being is that the speakers in the doors and rear 1/4's are infinity components and infinity 3 ways in the sail panels. I'm half tempted to just gut them all and go with door speakers and the subwoofer in the hatch and call it good since I KNOW that to be a good sounding setup. I have GOT to get my tunes back though.

Oh that's just FANTASTIC.

That's my remote lead wire. No breaks or kinks anywhere, I think the wire itself just went (it's been in the car since at least about 2001). Problem is that I believe it took out the remote lead turn on diode in the head unit because she ain't turning anything on. SUCK.
Everything else seems copacetic. I'm removing the 4" Infinity Reference components from the rear 1/4 panels (for sale soon if anyone's interested) and rewiring the Infinity Kappa 650.5i sail panel speakers for the rears, and bypassing the factory amp. This is in prep cause I'm going to lose the rear speakers anyway when the cage goes into the car.
Right now I'm trying to figure out a way to use a relay off the main power feed to the amp to trigger the remote lead based on stereo output. I'll figure something out, or send the Alpine in for a repair I guess.
*edit* Verified. :( Less than 5v at the remote lead. Gotta contact a service center tomorrow and see about a repair. I CAN tap the switched 12v source for the HU to run the amp, but I'd MUCH rather have it being remote lead controlled like it should be. Gotta wait a couple of weeks for my HU mount to come in anyway, so I've got time for sending the unit off.

Yeah, I could easily do that. I just don't want to. I'm kind of anal about things being right, and that would be a band aid fix.

I didnt know that wasnt right... All the amps i ever wired had the TURN ON LEAD run right to a fuse with a clip.

Well, correct is remote lead from stereo to the amp. Otherwise the amp is on full time.
Alpine doesn't service my head unit anymore. Did some calling and found a place that can do the fix though, so all should be well.

So, thought I'd update this. Two and a half weeks ago, I shipped my stereo to Sound-Repair.com. He was booked up, but got back to me on Friday last week, said the voltage regulator was fried, replaced it (quoted $80 prior), but after replacement now has audio issues. Ordered parts, but will take longer obviously, though he's not changing the price of $80. Hoping to have the stereo back soon, as I have the following to install with it:

LED lit, don't know if I'm going to wire in for a switched or a headlamp switched turn-on yet. Amazing piece.

Where did you get that? What kind of material is it made out of? Looks great!
As for the stereo, I honestly would have just bought a new receiver. But, when you're partial to something, it's understandable.

Those HU mounts are nice. Ive been debating on it or a double din setup. Starting to like this option more.
