We really need some kind of nerdery at ltxtech. Maybe a Technology/PC subforum?

Anyway, I have a system that I put together pre-Win7. It now has Windows 7 Pro and ran Server 2008 prior. I get graphic card-related BSOD's on both OS's. Tried different drivers, games, etc. It primarily happens when playing a game and is definitely not a heat issue.

So, I want to upgrade to a new card or cards. I play stuff like Skyrim, Crysis, StarCraft 2, etc when I have time. I have done a little research on what is out there and I'm not looking for anything crazy. This machine will eventually become a dedicated VM host.

My current card: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16814102801
My current board: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16813130226

I'm more of an infrastructure kind of guy, and gamer rigs/video cards are not my specialty. Instead of just getting what I think might be ok, I thought I'd post up to my fellow LTx nerds.

Thanks.

Have you updated the graphics cards drivers to the latest version of CCC?

Is check for updated drivers first. Then if that still won't work I would look to update.

That X58 board is a great base. I would look into a new card though. Skyrim and Crysis are pretty taxing on the oldercards. My recommendation would be an nVidia 560TI or something similar. If possible to SLI I would do that. But a 560TI should be plenty to tun those games and still run cool. You can usually find them for around $200 or less. But if you want you could aslo go with a newer 600 series card if that is in budget.

I'd def recommend the 600 series.....those are blowing the 500 series out of the water.

The reason I say the 560 is because they are readily available and they are pretty cheap. Alot of the nicer 600's are still unavailable or very pricey.

I've been updating all of my drivers regularly since I built this rig. When I first put it together, X58 and the i7 just came out and there were a lot of bugs. Now it's pretty solid and is considered outdated lol.

The 600 series is too rich for my blood. I play some games occasionally, but not enough to justify a $400+ card unless I was building a no-budget, gaming-specific machine. Based on a little bit of price shopping, a 560 could be had fairly cheap. Thanks for the tip, I think I'll do a little more digging on the variations of the 560 and shop around for deals. Do you guys know of any forum or online store that sell used equipment?

Try looking at the at I 77xx or 78xx series. Entry level there is just a couple of bills now I believe.

I hear ya on outdated. I'm still rocking an I7 950 in an Asus Rampage III Gene board. Only two sata III ports, no native USB 3.0, etc. The 5 ssd's in RAID 0 make it snappy though.......

Yeah, over clock.net is the shizz. I don't post there too much cause I'm such an illiterate. Don't feel so bad about my setup anymore either, lol.
