i am heading down to ohio to look at a 1997 Z28 camro this weekend and was woundering what to look for.

the car from pics seams straight with varry little where it is an ex Texas state police car. has 190,000 miles with almost no options what so ever (just the way i like them:metal:). it dose show two minor accidents while it was in service it was also repainted white last year.

Got any more info on it? Why is the guy selling it?

Just make sure to get it up on a lift and check out underneath the car too!!

Oil coming from the back of the intake is one to look for. If its got that, the intake gaskets will more than likely need to be replaced.

Check the plug wires for cracks or burns. With manifolds, I doubt this will be a huge deal. Also, make sure the car isn't missing when you're driving it. A miss at high RPMs after the motors warm could mean bad opti. (Worst-case scenario) You could knock down the price as much as an opti install if it is...

With 190K on it, you'll want to check the front suspension while driving. If there's a ton of squeaks, pops, etc., you could be looking at some $$$ getting all that replaced if you can't do it yourself.

If its an A4, make sure the trans doesn't slip at all. M6-make sure the clutch feels good.

Since its been wrecked before, I'd check the core support up front. If there's as much as a kink in it, I would recommend a replacement. Doesn't take much up front to cause other things to go wrong.

I'd also check to make sure inner fenders are not broke or anything like that since its been wrecked before. Little stuff like that can add up if its something that's going to concern you.

As always, check tires, oil, etc. Make sure the tires are wearing evenly and all fluids are in good condition and at the proper level. Check for curb rash on rims.

Window motors are always a problem in these cars. Although you said it had no options, I believe manual windows were 1LE only, but I'm not sure. If it does have them, make sure they don't get stuck halfway. They'll almost never go down fast, but if they're getting stuck, it'll need a new motor.

Other than that, I guess you could check the hood/hatch struts. Those could go in 190K.

Most importantly, gauge all this according to how much he's asking for the car. If its dirt cheap, obviously its not going to be in perfect shape, and that'll cut down on your ability to negotiate price.

sold off at auction a dealer has it now. asking $3700 from the pics cloth int, auto, hard top, power windows and i think a tape player

has a new front fender and fender lining from doing a p.i.t. menuver and a new rear bumper cover from another cop not stopping in time (looked up case files) that is really all i got on it. it is stock. the only two owners are the Texas state police and the dealership in ohio. the car passed all safty and emission tests in texas and is good through the end of the year, but seeing as a live in michigan who needs emissions:D

also what is the RPO code the 'maros got when they had the cop package?

I'd definately try to knock that price down to at least $2,800 - $3,000.. Thats way too high, dealership or not. Its been in an accident and its got high milage. Not worth that price (only exception is it was in extremely good condition). I bought my Formula with 160K on it for $2,500 (A4, power everything, & t-tops). It needed headers because the manifolds were shot, but other than that its been a great car. I put pasesetter LT's, ory, and a LM2 exhaust system on it. It fixed the problem, and everything was all good. Deals are out there.. If hes not willing to negotiate, I'd pass it up simply because I think the price is way too high.

I can guarantee they didn't give anywhere close to that for it. I'd find some things wrong with the car and knock the price down. I'd be shooting to get it for $2500 if I were you. Dealerships will do about anything to get a sale, especially now. I bet they didn't pay much over $1000 at auction, but you then have your "fetch fees" and the money put into the car through the service dept's inspection (if they did. I'd ask). Not to mention a small dealer profit on top of that. Really, $1500 over the actual price of the car isn't bad at all. I've seen people get raped and pay over 10K over invoice. Sounds stupid, but there's alot of dumb people out there. And everyone wonders why they're upside-down in their vehicle loans...

well went to look at the car (no pics my camra was being stupid) the int is a little beat up stains scratches but the extrior is excalint no dents or rust bubling. strats right up nice, the engine makes no weird sounds pulls good. the trans shifts nice dosn't slip. it is a B4C car. the steering is fine nice and tight. when i came back i had them put it on a hoist and checked the under side it was under coated and did not see any rust.

i will go back tomarrow and see what they will give me for my 01 GP:secret: i am also bring my mom she is good at getting the price nocked down on stff

also before i forget it has 160,000 on it not 190,000

I wouldnt pay anything over $2,800 for the car then.. If they say they cant go that low, walk away and tell the to give you a call if they change their mind. It also helps to have the $2,800 cash in hand if you are even willing to pay that much. To me, personally, it wouldnt be worth it.. Just dont rush it.

Why wouldnt they take the GP?? Seems to me they would be able to sell that for more of a profit since a wider variety of people would be looking at it?

They'll keep a high-mile 97 Camaro on the lot, but not an 01 GP? They must not like money...

Did they just low-ball your trade, or say they didn't want it?
