View Full Version : Thinking of trading my vehicle.....

Noooooo, not my camaro (not yet at least...). Since my recent failure at selling the montero on EBAY.... I decided to give BARTERING a try... Based off that new reality show, where they barter their way up to stuff........
My goal was a little simpler... I wanted to get rid of my Montero , for something with a v8... bigger in size, not OLDER than the montero, and with less miles.... That I could trailer a car with.....
For those that are not familiar with my montero.....

Then, this morning I woke up to a text... a lady texted me and said that her and her boyfriend, like my truck and want something smaller than what they have.... when I asked what they have , she advised me that it was a 2000 TAHOE Z71....
Knowing that the TAHOES got the rounder style in 2000, I got excited... I asked how many miles, and its just over 100k.... IT MEETS ALL OF MY CRITERIA... I calmly asked her for pics and a list of issues.....
Well, she said that it has a small dent on the back and the bumper is tweaked...NO BIGGIE.
she tells me that the front leather is not in the greatest of shapes... NO BIGGIE.
Then I get the pics, and it appears to be a 1999 or older BOXY tahoe...... I do some research and find out that GM switched to the rounder style in 2000, with the exception of the LIMITED and Z71 packages..... THOSE stayed boxy for one more year. THen I read about it... 255 hp, NOT BAD... Towing capacity of 7,000 lbs, not that Im gonna tow that often.... I noticed the small things... two tone leather..... the integrated fog lights in the front bumper, the brush guard..... It grew on me quick.
NOW FOR THE PICS:
95709571957295739574
I think its got potential... it gets between 11-15 mpg according to EDMUNDs.... and my MONTERO with all the added weight and big tires gets about 12-15 mpg. So Im not losing anything there....
If there is minimal to no rust, and a check up proves everything healthy... I think I may go for it...
What do you all think.....?
BTW- its not final.... She and her bf leave for the shore this weekend, just as Miss Popo and I go to Florida for my annual Bday celebration (which I cant drink or eat junk food at). and we all return the same time. We agreed to get in touch and set up a time then if my truck is still available at that point. She agreed.
So till then... give me your input and if I get any other offers, Ill post them up as well...

Tahoe's are nice. My brother has one of that body style. Little things will go out in them, but overall, they are pretty strong vehicles. Lots of room, plenty of power. Lowsy gas mileage, but they have big gas tanks.
I say "go for it".
On another note; be careful on your bday celebration. I just know you are still recovering and don't want something like this to set your being healthy again back further.

Sounds like a perfect candidate for the diesel suv gm never built... lol
I'd say go for it if they are willing and everything checks out. I knew a couple of guys who had tahoe's and they were pretty sweet trucks.

I really think I will do it as long as it checks out... and its fuel economy really is on par with the montero. Ive never TRADED a vehicle before, but apparently thats the way to go anymore, because NO ONE has any money.
In 2 weeks if its good and both vehicles are available, I will try to make it permanent.
And thank you man.... Im borderline better... I keep relapsing, so I know Im one bad decision away from being back where I was again.... ANd I dont want that... esp not that far from home with a FLIGHT between there and home..... Ang and I discussed it... between my back and my insides... its gonna be a very chill very low activity vacation..... but it sounds really good right about now....

I have a 99 Tahoe and they make a great tow rig. I have even considered bringing it this year instead of my Duramax just because of the extra interior room, that and the Duramax needs tires.
And I get 15-17 with mine depending on how hard I drive it, expect 10 -12 towing your car.

Mine is in very good shape concidering how much it gets driven in the snow with salt on the roads and the 275,000 miles on it. It does have some rust starting to creep up on the inside door bottoms, but it is minimal.
These trucks are great in the snow, the weight plus 4WD means great traction :driving:

Honestly man, I would hold out for the Tahoe. With your back the way it is and the rest of your conditions, a bigger vehicle is going to make a better, more comfortable daily. I love my 'bird to death, but there's no way I could drive it regularly anymore. Just too hard to get in and out of with an achey back and bad knees. Plus you'll have a tow vehicle in case the camaro or the vette ever break down. Unless you plan on having a tow 'maro for the race 'maro lol
That car looks like someone's road racing project that they either don't have time or money for anymore...

Just to note, I'm not much of a DODGE fan either, but after having driven a duramax, a powerstroke and now my current cummins, hands down I'd have to say gimme a Dodge. Not only is it the best pulling truck in my opinion, it is also the most comfortable truck I've had to date. The people complaining about the rough ride of a dodge vs everyone else i can only sum up this way. Put someone who's only ever driving big wallowing landyachts into a sports car and see how they like the ride lol
Personally I'd favor the pick up, but then again, I am severely biased as I do NOT in particular like SUV's. HOWEVER, I have NOT been particularly impressed by chrysler's gas engines either. That 5.9 may be a beast, but it's a thirsty beast lol
The biggest concern I would have would be the transmission. Flat out Dodge automatics of that vintage suck huge hairy fat ones, even worse than the 10 bolts that come stock in our cars. And they tend to be expensive to replace. I would bet his transmission is starting to slip and he's trying to get out of paying to replace it. His trucks going to be about on par, maybe a little worse than your montero for fuel mileage.

Also dodge has a way of unnecessarily complicating stuff two. There were 5 different transfer cases for the 94-02 trucks, and many parts are year and sub model specific.

I think it goes beyond that. He did overheat the car, which means you'd be playing 50/50 on the headgaskets still being good for anymore amount of time, plus the heads are Iron, and very similar to the 96+ vortec heads (which are prone to cracking if they are overheated) don't know if Iron LT1 heads have that issue, but I imagine they do since the vortec heads are essentially the same thing just modified for a standard coolant flow engine, so no telling what damage may have been done there. That whole thing about having a hard time getting it into park and having to adjust the linkage, sounds to me like the previous owner may have had it apart and partially botched putting it back together.
If you were looking for a project car, I would jump on it. If you are looking for a DD, I wouldn't hesitate to pass. There are too many potentially expensive and time consuming potential problems from my liking.

Ok, thank you for talking some sense into me....
Would compression tests on all the cyl let me know if a gasket pushed?
I think starting the car and seeing if it ran like crap would be a good way lol. The best way I know of is to watch the exhaust and see if it smokes white. You could also inspect the engine bay to see if anything looked wet after it ran. Either of those ways should be fairly appearent. I'm sure someone else will chime in on the matter. I've never had to compression test a motor before, so I can't say one way or the other.
That being said:
I imagine that it could be a way to know if a gasket pushed, but a bad compression test could also mean that the motor is plain wore the f out (Bad rings, seals, you name it)
I just think that there are too many potential issues. Plus you still wouldn't have a good snow driver if you swapped the montero for that catastraphe waiting to happen. I see potential motor issues, potential transmission issues, and possibly even suspension issues. Some people do some really, really stupid stuff to get big wheels to fit. I have a friend who runs a shop and a salvage yard, he got a camaro that had two rear springs clamped together to get the extra height to clear a big wheel. It was a disaster waiting to happen.
It just seems like a project to me. If that's what you were looking for, it's a no brainer that that thing is pretty cool. I just wouldn't be looking to get into it for a daily.
I'm going to stop beating the poor dead horse now lol. :hammer::death:

Honestly the Tahoe would be the best fit for you. The sports cars are fun and all, but with an aggravated back condition, they can become irritating quick. A nice big comfy ride like the tahoe will keep your pain lower than it would be driving a normal car, because it will be more like sitting in a chair. It's something you'd be able to get in and out of easily because it's sitting high enough that you practically just step in vice half crawling into a car.

No problem man, just one impulsive person trying to keep another from making a regrettable decision lol
I do have to say that the Dodge would do in a pinch if the Tahoe fell through, but even then the only real concern there is the transmission, but all dodge trucks starting with the 47rh through the 48re are plagued with weak tranmissions. They can be built strong, but it's about 4k or better for a fully bullet proof build. Also, as long as the gearing inside is good, alot of guys find they are good with a good torque converter and an upgraded valve body, especially closer to stock. It's not so bad in the gas trucks, as they don't brutalize a tranny like a cummins will lol.

Larry,
I don't know if this will work or not, but I thought I would at least give you another option if the Tahoe doesn't work out. A good friend of mine is selling his Toyota Sequoia 4X4.
Its a 2003 Sequoia Limited 4X4, has 186,XXX miles, and is in great shape. Actually his cousin works for the Toyota dealership and has gone through everything, so its probably in immaculate shape. I have driven it before as he let me borrow it to go pickup my plane when I bought it last year in IL. The thing drove and looked like it was new, and still got 20 MPG even towing my plane!
He is asking $10,900 for it. I think the book value is somewhere around $12,XXX+. He just wants it sold quick.
Here are a couple pics. Let me know if you want more info.

Thank You BEN..... I just wont have any cash on top of what my truck could even sell for... so its gonna have to be even. I do appreciate you keeping me in mind though... and like I said, I have always like those.

I guess I'm just not a chrome person, but I don't see 7K in chrome on that bike lol. Of course, I don't know what that kind of work costs either. And lastly, you're right, I don't know who in their right mind would think that that bike would be a fair straight up trade for your rig. Dude gotta be smokin' something!

SO now that I am back and settled in.... I texted the lady with the tahoe, and she advised me that they decided to extend their vacation until Friday.....
Although I am kinda anxious to see the tahoe and see if we can make this work.... it gives me even MORE time to be less impulsive......... MY truck should be ready to go today or 2moro... it is currently having the horn replaced... and the roof lights (which stopped working) fixed as well......

OK... well here we go... I dont want to start another thread with a poll...... but Im down to the final 2 choices.... THE 2000 TAHOE with 106,000 miles or the 1997 RAM 1500 with 77,000 miles.
Im feeling the TAHOE......

Id prefer the Tahoe, Yeah its got a few more mile on it but its also 3 years newer. Plus I don't like Dodges of that vintage because the paint is usually crap or going to crap, and the sheet metal usually doesn't last for some reason. Even my stepdads brand new 2012 Ram truck has cheap paint on that shows swirl marks and scratches just from drying it with a towel.

My point just was that the Ram could be a viable alternative to the tahoe if it were to fall through somehow.
The only reason I'm partial to Ram's right now is because mine has a cummins in it, and it's a 1 ton dually that is now looking like it's going to get somewhere between 19 and 20 mpg around town

Not many used car lots want to touch my truck because it is modified, so I have plans to have it inspected and cleaned up by weds.... The lady that made me the offer did call back today... We agreed that if she could wait till Weds, I would sell her my truck for 5g..... thats EXCELLENT book value on it in STOCK condition, so she is getting "extras."

I had the same problem when I bought my cummins. Lucky for me they wanted to get rid of that truck as bad as I needed it lol, so in the end we wound up just shy of what I wanted for my truck. Wish I could have kept it and sold it privately, but it was my daily and I had nothing else to drive to and from work as the car was down at that point.

ok... here we are... i think im gonna do it unless anyone can tell me y i shouldnt....
The Escalade is 12,900..... i found that KBB said its worth 14,900.... my credit union says its worth 13,800.... either way its less than asking.
The owner of the used car lot offered me $3500 for my montero which he had no intrest in.... but to make tge deal happen he made me an offer.....
When he found out my uncle was his Dr he gave me another 500 fof my trade.... but left his escalade at 12.900 with a 3mo powertrain warranty...(which i can pay later to expand/extend)... I know hes in tge business to make money not break even...and my truck will prob go right to auction....so its a slight risk for him... do i be content w the final deal..... or do i try to get him lower on the escalade price.....?
2002 caddilac escalade.... 6.0 liter...awd. fully loaded... in GREAT SHAPE.

Honeslty I wouldnt know the difference... lol... I know there was a 5.3.... and a 6.0. Its the 6.0
I can afford it..... and I think its a good deal, but I wanted to bounce it off my SITE family to see if they think I should try to beat the guy up on price anymore. I was "touched" that he knocked off an extra 500 because my uncle is his Dr, and I am an understanding person... unfortunatley for me, I dont always put me first and I think things like... I know he has to make money also......
Badbird_96
07-20-2012, 04:38 PM
The lq9 is the h/o version. As far as price goes he is going to make money. He probably traded that in for 6-7. But under book value is a start. Lets see if I'm understanding this correctly you will owe 9,400 if I'm reading it right. Its hard to say haggle if he already threw an extra 500 on a truck he wasn't interested in

Its 9600 and change with tax and fees, I dont have the sales slip in front of me, but either way... yes you are understanding correctly. And thats what Im thinking.... he already gave me a "hook up"...... Part of me says, he is still making money and you can haggle more... then part of me says, he is not making that much anymore, now that he is willing to trade the montero in......and I know NO ONE is in the business of breaking even, or even being close to breaking even.
I got the scoup on the guy now from my uncle... he has known him for a while through his practice... turns out he is friends with the owner of a local caddy dealer, and he gets first dibs on dealer trade ins before they hit the lot, or go to auction....
Badbird_96
07-20-2012, 04:56 PM
So he probably gets them for a good deal. Offer him less but don't low ball. I'm always afraid to piss people off that way lol unless I know for sure that's the value. But if it was traded into a caddy dealer then it was probably taken good care of if they were getting a new caddy most people like that really treat their cars good.

Thats what I was thinking... I also know it was one owner.... And although I dont wanbt to make a judgement , I still will. Trashy people dont USUALLY buy 50-60k cars... and the mileage break down is less than 10k a year....
Thats kinda what makes me feel better about the truck....

I'd say take it and run lol. according to kbb, your truck would only be worth 2500 in trade if it was bone stock. Mods usually hurt you at trade in time, but in this case they seem to be putting you ahead.
If you do decide to try to push the price a little more, becareful not to push too far. He's offering more than book on your truck and offering you well below book on his. You might try for another couple hundred off, but in my careful opinion, that amount may not be worth haggling over depending on how badly you want that truck lol.
And you'll definitely be hooked on fullsized if you get that caddy. Sprawl space is awesome! lol

And that is what I was thinking... I think what I will do is approach him with another 2 or 3 thousand of cash down payment... maybe with SOME cash on the table, there will be something to work with... even if its a couple hundred....

Possibly. Like I said, just be careful about it. He might think he's doing you a favor, or he could just be in the used car business because he likes to buy and sell things and as long as he makes some money off a car, doesn't really care. When you go back, just try to feel the guy out a little more and see if he'd be receptive to anymore negotiation. He might just think he's doing you a favor with enough meat on the bone for him to make some cash on the caddie and still be reasonably sure of making a buck off your truck too, whatever he decides to do with it.

I just have a problem with vettes. Well actually its the people that think because it says Corvette its the fastest best car ever made. My father in law thinks his dads bond stock 92 is super fast. His dad wanted to race my ws6 in the 91 vette he used to have because my ws6 was trash. His vette was even having opti problems and he wanted to run for pinks. My wife wouldn't let me take his car from him. But anyways point stands people like that make it so I wouldn't own one except maybe a new zr1

Well Im not that guy.... My camaro is my baby.. it sits in the garage... the vette lives outside... even in the winter...... I got it to DD, and save mileage on the truck and still have a fun driver.....
Along the way I have met alot of vette owners, and the people you describe are definitley out there, and out there in FORCE... but the C4s have become cheap and I have noticed that its a younger crowd... modding them and beating the snott out of them. The 'snobs" have moved on to the c5s and c6s...... and are slowly selling off to the crown who are now getting rid of their tuner imports with big wings, and neon lights...

For those that dont know, the deal is done.... I am now the owner of a Cadillac Escalade.
I took it up to BLUEBOTTLEZ at the garage to check it out, and he gave it the thumbs up... I didnt realize how clean it was... hell, I didnt realize it had a moonroof.....
He did tell me it sounds like a wheel bearing (front left) is just starting to sing, so I mentioned it to the dealer... he will have it replaced for me whenever I can be without it for a day or 2 (I wasnt willing to leave it today).
The dealer also only had one key for it, so he is having another key and fob made for me....
Anyways, as I posted on Facebook, when the lot guy came out and drove my montero away with no plate on it, I actually felt like throwing up.... 12 years, I was the only owner of it, alot of memories, blood, sweat and tear...oh yeah and MONEY in that thing... but its for the best......
I know its just a stock suv, and not much to look at but I figured I would post up a few pics....

Oooo sts kit would be sweet and make a ton of power with the 6.0s. Hotrod did a deal with one and got it to put down like 800-900 HP and the firing system crashed and it was actually a bone stock like 4.9 or something. Jim showed me and I'm sure he will chime in with the exact details lol
